If the tech companies are organizing their developer events in the US - think Apple and its WWDC - they're willfully endangering people.

@eniko I have an event coming up in June and every day that passes I get closer to cancel plans. Frigging border chumps will interpret that going with a tourist visa to a conference may count as work, like, without batting an eye.

I read the full article and it broke my heart, I'm so glad I violently refused a job from Google back then

It's madness. They revoked her visa apparently for no more than "vibes" and treated her like a criminal. I wonder how much money they made from holding her for two weeks. Worth it to them I'm sure, whatever it does to the person they detain for no good reason.

And like she says, she's lucky compared to most of the other prisoners in there, who may be trapped in that labyrinth for months, without people on the outside with means and influence to help them.

Right. And if you can't avoid travel to US, I suggest to enter via a preclearance airport in Ireland. Those are - as far as I can guess - the safest border crossings for entry. @thomholwerda

I’m still scared for myself bc my passport was a limited validity passport. They claimed they were unable to verify my U.S. citizenship because my birth certificate was Texas short form and didn’t have the name of the institution I was born at. Had everything else though and that wasn’t good enough. In order to renew my passport I have to fill out the paperwork again and that requires a new passport photo. Problem is that all the places around me are appt only and it’s been this mess. I live in fear.

did I mention the unable to verify your citizenship stuff was during Biden administration? Yeah. It’s been a nightmare

It's fucking wild treating people like this is just... Normal now? In some places, at least?

Meanwhile, because I'm an EU citizen and a generic white guy, emigrating from The Netherlands to Sweden was a fucking breeze and barely even registered on my radar as "a thing".

yeah i dont have realid yet and i am probably not gonna get one because my passport counts. i have so many horror stories i fucking hate this country

@puppygirlhornypost2 Yeah I feel like empty platitudes like "it'll get better!" and "Have you considered moving to Canada or whatever?" are a bit... Well, empty at this point.

I don't really have anything encouraging to think of anymore. It's fucking bullshit over there.

This is beyond fucked up. At the same time, I won't ever comprehend how one can run through such systems and still claim:

> If someone is a criminal, I agree they should be taken off the streets.

As if someone who "is" a "criminal" has it any better. Nobody deserves to be treated that way.

Context: ICE operating on GEO Groups behalf to maximize profits by filling jails with literally anyone they can grab.

i wouldn't go there either, but I've lived there almost my entire life

I'm a US citizen, and even I am avoiding travel into the US.

My wife (non-American) and I were thinking about using the US as a layover point, since a flight we want to go on didn't have a direct route from Canada, but after what's happened, we're not doing that either.

The US is just too scary right now to risk it.

money quote - both literally and figuratively: "The more detainees, the more money they make. It stands to reason that these companies have no incentive to release people quickly."
