i am tired that mastodon.social and @Gargron are too preoccupied with pushing unnecessary features and growth and PR shit for mastodon instead of keeping everyone safe. my patience has run out.
i am considering messaging mawr and asking them to fully cut off access to that instance until further notice on plush.city. i am fucking tired. people are actively being put in direct harm because someone won't clean up their own backyard

This is the perpetual problem with Mastodon.Social.
Its continued existence genuinely threatens fediverse stability & Masto as a project. They're not capable of proactive (or at times, even reactive) administration, making it a perpetual vector for attacks like that Nazi earlier this morning.
But if we block them, we cut off the least resilient members of our community.

We have Mastodon.social muted specifically because their public timelines are frequently akin to toxic waste (though admittedly, not usually _that_ toxic). The only posts that make it through the mute are posts which mention specific users, which can be public, followers only, or private.

We've blocked them in the past because their moderation was so nonexistent, literal Nazis would last more than a day and the entire community had to harass Gargron to take action. They're better now than they were, but with open registrations amid the global rise of fascism, the few that get through are a lot more in number than anyone would consider acceptable.
I think it's time to hold another vote on suspending them.

Yeah, that's the other side of the double edged sword. The people who create accounts on Mastodon.social usually have little to no interest in the technology as a concept. To them, Twitter = Bluesky = Mastodon, each being a single website with a single domain where everyone goes.
They have more pressing issues to hand than understanding the Fediverse past their ability to communicate with it. There's no easy solution.

Given that the problems of Eugen's choices re: mastodon.social (inc failure to moderate) has been a problem for so long. It definitely parallels the short-sighted talking points which Mastodon-evangelists use to slag on Bluesky (and currently reveling in the bullshit going on with bsky/jay graber)

@thibaultmol @celesteh @alexia even the British government manages to automatically remove vehicle registration marks that could have offensive connotations from circulation every 6 months so they can never be allocated to anyones vehicle (and they have to keep up with news and trends to be able to do this)

not only it's open signup but also joinmastodon.org and Mastodon mobile apps will show you a "register on mastodon.social" button and a "choose a different instance" button. Guess which one is primary color and which one is white, too.

This is incredibly poor moderation, because you can set username rules to prevent this sort of person from even signing up, like, mastodon.social literally added the feature too. They have no excuse. For any other admins reading, they look like this in your moderation menu on the left, and then here's also what the rule editor looks like. You can even set the matching to "require approval" instead of outright blocking the username...
