When we released post editing for #Mastodon, we first released a version that supported processing and displaying edits incoming from other servers, before releasing a version that flipped a switch allowing anyone to make edits. We're taking an identical approach with quote posts, as the upcoming 4.4 version of Mastodon will begin displaying quote posts from other servers and software. Once this is widely deployed on the network, 4.5 will bring the long awaited ability to quote posts.

I recently discovered this option that I can choose who can quote my toots, but there is no option to disable it completely, I have to allow at least mentioned people to quote me - why is that?
TBH, as a person that was against quote toots from the beginning I'm not happy about the way it was implemented (if that's the final approach ofc)

Finally! --The long overdue #QuotePosts will be phased in on #Mastodon:

@paul

Hi Paul,thanks.
I have not noticed any relevant "layout change" regarding quotes, neither in my app, nor in the browser version.

Apart from that, why does @Gargron write, "...as the upcoming 4.4 version of Mastodon will begin displaying..." Its tempus clearly relates to the future, not the present...๐Ÿค”

in reply to HistoPol (#HP) ๐Ÿด ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿด

@HistoPol 4.4 has been out for a while in nightly and now beta. You are on it now and have been for several months as test subjects on Mastodon.Social. Other instances installed it, also. I've been meaning to install it for a couple months. I'm going to install it a little later today since it was released today in beta and not nightly.

I was just curious if their was a noticeable change.

@Gargron

I think the tempus is actually referring to the actual official version release for all instances and is simply software dev speak.

in reply to Paul Chambers๐Ÿšง

@paul @HistoPol well it's not the actual 4.4, it's just a nightly of the branch that will eventually become 4.4 so it does not have all the features that the final 4.4 will. Of course another reason you might not be seeing it yet even in the case that the code has been added is that it might still be disabled on the instance for now.
in reply to HistoPol (#HP) ๐Ÿด ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿด

still a little short on examples but here is one of someone quote posting their own older post and another where the quoted person has probably not enabled the BlueSky bridge.

It might also be that only these self-quotes work for now because I've not really been able to find different examples and some #quoteposts that show up fine from Threads on Sharkey only show the "pending approval" on mastodon.social.

@ikuturso @renchap @paul

Maybe a stupid question but how do you usw the Quote Funktion actively?

a) Go to the target text's post, highlight the text, then somehow activate the quote function, or,

b) Create a new post, somehow circle back to the text that you want to quote, initiate the quote function?

I couldn't find either alternative...?

Thanks, though. Now, I know.

@HistoPol Mastodon 4.4 only support creating quote posts that are created by other software.

You can not yet quote other posts from Mastodon, this will come later in the summer.

@ikuturso @paul

in reply to Paul Chambers๐Ÿšง

@paul We bump the version as soon as the previous version gets a Release Candidate, so mastodon.social displayed a 4.4 version since last October.

Ingesting remote quote posts is behind an experimental flag that has not yet been enabled on mastodon.social, but it should be very soon.

in reply to Mastodon Migration

@mastodonmigration that's why I was curious.

As one poster pointed out, dev branches change often. Today was truly the first beta pre-release and i with a second beta planned next week then I think an alpha version coming out and eventually the stable version.

Looks like you will be able to filter quote posts like you do with other filters. @shlee, in this reply thread, showed where you can prevent your posts from being quote posted.

@xChaos @makeitmythic What do you mean by "translation"? If you're referring to the post translation functionality, it's server-specific, as it always has been. Not all servers have the translation feature enabled because it incurs additional costs. I'm not sure about mastodon.social's policy on this, but here at mementomori.social, we provide this feature through DeepL. @Gargron

@WizardOfDocs @waystation Yes! YES!!โ˜๏ธ

@Gargron Quote boosts CAN๐Ÿ‘ BE๐Ÿ‘ GOOD๐Ÿ‘, but we *need* to care about & ADDRESS their critical "triple-A" potential:

Abuse

Accessibility

Annoyance

(Failure to address each of the above in THAT order of priority is a slow & painful way to learn lessons that've already been taught)

in reply to Eugen Rochko

sometimes I wonder what can we learn from #Twitter or even #Bluesky in terms of social medias like it.. quote posting, I think I'm fine with it, I just saw that it *could* be worse if implemented like in Twitter, I do hope that at least, since switching microblogging IS easier than like #Youtube or #Twitch it can finally build a sizable space in the internet.

Is Quoting Posts a way? Yeah, I think so, but also like.. a bunch, I can't remember it on the top of my head.. Welp, that's life

in reply to Panicky_Patzer

I don't know. For me personally that's unnecessary.

I just don't want to be shut out of a conversation that involves my post: thus the option of a "right of top reply" would work for me. Especially so if combined with an automatic deletion of the quote post when I'm blocked.

@alfonsoml Sure. And they can also physically come to my house. The reality on social media is that the screenshot route is way less common and way less damaging.

The quote + block route, or simply quote + not give the original account a visible place to reply, is the common one and Mastodon is now in a position to fix that in a very elegant manner.

Pepijn

@azalea It takes the conversation away from the original place.

It brings it to a place where other accounts don't / can't see the context.

That includes the original account who might not even know a discussion goes on.

I'm fine with quote posting if these two items are addressed (which they can but don't appear to be with this version of the new functionality).
Without addressing this it will increase the divide between large "broadcasters" and everyone else.

Totts

@azalea @Pepijn @waystation Because ultimately, I write things on Mastodon without much consideration as to whether they are read or not.

I just try to write about matters which I think have some utility.

(I am actually flabbergasted when some of my posts get boosted 100s of times as I am nobody of importance, more so to be followed by people who are plainly sharper than me)
