The irony of Irish-Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hobnobbing with the King on St. Patrick’s Day is wickedly delightful. There is something quite funny in (sort of) post-colonial Canada looking to the Crown as a bulwark against Trump. But also - this over-the-top golden reception room exemplifies all that Trump wants to be - but never will.

I read a story somewhere today about Trump bringing some of his golden 'bling' to the White House... which made me laugh when I then saw these pictures of the King with Carney.

Trump is forever a wannabe.

100%.

The only improvement would have been if Carney had been delivered in the Royal Carriage, like Trump wanted.

It is also great that Carney is there within days of being sworn in as Prime Minister and Trump's visit is happening, when? The invitation wasn't exactly clear on when it would happen.

The Crown is one of the core parts of the Canadian identity and always has been. We should make the monarchy more visible in our lives.

When someone asks what the difference is between a Canadian and an American, part of the answer is to show whose head is on our coins.

we can keep our « crown » identity by having parliament change who our king is. King Donald instead of King Charles. And King Donald would happily take all our crown land and transfer it ti Trumo Org real estate 😀

also, this meeting is taking place at Buckingham Palace, in London.

So far, Trump just has a letter from Charles that offers to discuss meeting him at some undecided date at Balmoral, which is the Royals' cabin in the woods.

Symbolism is everything with monarchy.

Trump has one serious impediment to his aspirations. He is a vulgar little twerp.
in reply to Senator Paula Simons🇨🇦

How much of a bulwark will he really be if he’s already invited Trump over and has kept mum over threats of annexation of his kingdom…

to quote Monty Python: Oh, king, eh? Very nice. And how'd you get that, then? By exploiting the workers! By hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society! If there's ever going to be any progress--

@Shanmonster as a Brit I cannot wait for the whole freak show to be gone.
We can vote for a dog to be President instead, purely ceremonial, always welcome at events

lightheartedly but nevertheless meant, you are welcome to keep him, and all his relatives, in perpetuity, from this Englishman's perspective. To borrow from the French, Vive la République! 🖖😁

I know you're deep into it by virtue of your position, but WTH do we need with a King???

Time we ought to start studying cutting our last ties to the empire.

And if that ends up with us joining the EU, all the better. 🙂

@VE2UWY I mean, I took an oath of loyalty to Queen Elizabeth and her heirs and successors, so there’s that. But as a Canadian with absolutely no family connection to the British Isles, I think constitutional monarchy works - and serves as a protection against the kind of imperial presidency that was devolved to the Trump 2.0. It’s a relatively benign way to scratch a human itch. #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada

DLink reshared this.

I do have several threads that lead back to England ... but maybe that's why I don't care for it.

The British monarchy has been benign, certainly since QE2 but what's to stop our monarch from becoming the type of person you describe?

in reply to Senator Paula Simons🇨🇦

<small smile> His Majesty is surrounded by an exceptionally careful cadre of supporters, who ensure every symbolic message or shade of meaning is exactly as intended.

Charles *is* wearing a red tie.

you could sell JUST those chairs and feed thousands of hungry people for months with the $.

The Carney/King meeting room is far more opulent than Trump's Oval Office studio. Trump needs to hire a better production designer 😉 In fairness, Trump did match colour of his hair perfectly against the yellow fabric on the chairs in he Oval Office studio 😉
