I truly never thought that I would, in my lifetime, be sharing a post like this one, but well, here we are.

The California Secretary of State approved the gathering of signatures to place on the ballot a measure that, if approved, would take the following steps:

👉 Authorize and Fund a Commission to study the feasibility, costs, and govermental changes needed for Californina to transition from a State to a Nation, which will be published in 2027.

👉 Place on the ballot for the 2028 election the question "Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?"

Despite all the amped-up rhetoric circulating on the Internet about this initiative, it is not a vote for succession per se, but is instead a reasonable measure to study the pro’s and con’s of what California would truly look like as a Nation with the 5th largest economy in the world, and an annual GDP of 4 Trillion Dollars. Once that analysis is complete, California voters would then be presented with the results and asked to express whether or not they wish to continue towards independence or remain part of the Union.

Given the direction that a plurality of voters in other States wish to take the U.S. in, beginning the process of examining alternate options and opportunities is simply being good stewards of the Public Trust, the Generations that will follow us, and Democracy as a whole.

It also provides California with an additional set of tools to respond to Bullies and Tyrants in the only language that they understand, which is, when necessary, to punch back.

For the record, this household supports this petition and has committed to signing it. That does not mean that it will ultimately result in a decision by us to vote “yes” on the 2028 ballot question, but it does mean that I believe it has become necessary to examine whether such a move is feasible and desirable, so an informed choice can be made.
