"I would expect that professional journalists at well-established newspapers to be able to call"

There's a very, very, VERY good reason why some lazy journos don't make a phone call to check a story.

It's because they might discover that actually they don't have a story.

Then they'd have to start all over again, find another story, and do some actual WORK.

for local news there's also a deliberate vagueness (particularly in headlines) for mundane stuff like traffic reports (where the full facts are handed on a plate to journalists via the Police, Council and National Highways) - for instance an incident on the A14 rarely shows the actual area in the headline (its a long road, stretching from Felixstowe to Cambridge and beyond!), nor the A12 which goes all the way to London - this appears to be done to obtain clicks to make the news site look good for advertisers..

also since Newsquest swallowed up many of the locals, I see reports of serious crimes in the North and Scotland mixed up in the "50 top headlines" with those in Suffolk and Essex - for those who don't click through *and* have a good knowledge of geography, this must surely increase the fear of crime in the local area when there is no need to do so..
