If you're critical of the US government and you are planning to cross the US border any time soon, today is a good day to review EFF's border search pocket guide: eff.org/document/eff-border-se…
in reply to evacide

the only correct way to cross the US border is to exit this fascist cuntry
in reply to evacide

Fuck ICE. They will never get my passwords and can just SUCK IT. I will take a burner phone with me. Like an old school flip phone. Calls only no internet.

If you're critical of the US government and you are planning to cross the US border any time soon, don't.
Most places in the world are now better places to be than the US, and it's getting worse daily.
in reply to evacide

How would they know if someone was critical of their administration?
in reply to EndicottRoad59

Quite easily, especially as most sane people would be.

Besides border searching, they have been monitoring social media sites, so if anyone's using their real name there...

@EndicottAuthor
By taking your digital device and searching through messages, emails, phone calls, images and social media.

if I end up at the US border, I'll have made a wrong turn somewhere!

What I’m getting from this is you should propose to be harassed and all you can do is grin and hope they use lube during the body cavity search. An alternative, despite it sounding like hyperbole, would be to find and use ways to enter and leave the US illegally. Leaving and entering legally means interacting with assholes. Probably not a method we can discuss here safely, though.

some people will find out the hard way:

"French scientist denied US entry after phone messages critical of Trump found"

hi, random question but what mastodon client would you recommend, on android preferably?
in reply to evacide

As a Canadian citizen who has been searched many times crossing into the USA I would strongly recommend that no one print this and carry it with them while crossing the border. Having such a thing on you will very likely escalate a routine search.

The advice in the guide is good, but the suggestion to "carry it in your pocket while travelling", implying you have it while crossing into the USA is really bad advice for anyone who is not a US citizen (and maybe for them too).

Best not to even bother going to the USA, it isn't worth it

@kevinrns 😔
I have friends there. And always had a good time over there, ran into cool people....
I guess I'll visit them next decade then.
in reply to Kevin Russell

@kevinrns Call it denial...

I remember the Canadian "adopt an American" jokes from 2002, offering a spot to couch surf for the next four years.

If you can afford it, this is where burner thinkpads come in handy. If you're doing shit you don't want the government to see don't take your M4 MacBook...

luckily I have no need to go to the U.S., a place that I used to love, and now I hate.

tried to open it but ironically my phone runs down in lockdown mode so it wouldn’t load. #eff should consider a vanilla html version ;)

Thanks for sharing! I'm wondering if the recommendation not to use fingerprint readers is specific to the threat model "crossing a border" or extends beyond that. I mean, I guess it is also quite easy to get a film of someone typing a password on his keyboard, but might be a bit more technically involved to get his fingerprints. Any though?

I'm not sure having the device powered down is a good idea. I was forced several times to open a laptop to show it's indeed a laptop. And when it'' locked, with a good password, I think high tech attacks would be very hard.

Also you blend in less with a laptop or phone off

No, if $WORK wants me to go, I'll be "No, they should come here."
in reply to evacide

thank you for this! Although I appreciate a neat guide, it also doesn’t help much, especially for foreign visitors. If they ask anything, I have to provide, otherwise they’ll suspect and deny my entry
in reply to evacide

It seems to be be 8 years old. Is there a newer version that takes recent developments into account?

I like how this guide basically just states: If you want to make sure that your devices are not taken away from you, while you're being arrested at the border, do not travel to the U.S.

And that is solid advice - don't!
(This isn't a Trump thing either, these laws have been in effect for decades at this point)

moving data to the cloud does not seem like particular good advice if the US gov is your threat here

@eloy
As I said, my point is that they are counting on public anger to turn violent, so that they can invoke emergency powers and complete their shutdown of democracy, killing a few and incarcerating many along the way. It's dictatorship 101.
