@paezha : what worked ? Not being on Whatsapp.

I had kept Whatsapp for long because of the "non-switchers". I refused to accept some new terms and, at some point, my whatsapp account was automatically cancelled.

The closest persons in my life that were not on Signal at that time switched in the next weeks.

Of course, not everyone. But I’m free.

That’s the only solution : you have to pay the price to your own freedom.

I think you nailed it. I have to keep WhatsApp because several important contacts (eg. Landlord's handyman who fixes broken shit!) simply won't switch.

Even getting friends to consider switching is 'hard', and unlike some people my 'sales-foo' is weak!

The Signal Foundation must finally develop a standalone Linux app or at least stop hindering the development of such an app. Nothing is good with Google breathing down your neck.

@juma_asterisco
There's a Debian package: signal.org/download/#

There's also a FlatPak for Chromebooks.

@derekmorr they have often taken action against developers of third party apps in the past and prevent the sensible use of standalone alternatives such as Axolotl for Linux Phone

I agree. All the people that want to keep in touch with you will find a communication channel for that.
I made that experience a long time ago when I stopped using ICQ and kept in touch with most of my ICQ contacts afterwards through other channels.

@calcifer without a smartphone as a standalone app? I doubt it.

Similar strategy here: Trying to convince people to switch or if they really don't want to they have to use standard text messages.

And I really like your last sentence! 👍🏼

@jeffd Whoa yesss, I like the way you think, supersize switching! Your wish is my command Jean-François ;) cheers to #global #switchday #whatsapp #signal

same here. No need to convince *everyone*, but just the ones you communicate the most with. My parents was difficult until I manually installed Signal on their phone. Now they use it (with me) and so my family group is now on Signal.
To all others, I sent the message once that I will be available only on Signal. They want to remain on Whatsapp? Fine, I won't answer to them timely.

First your closest ones. Then little by little the others will follow.
