Tonight I received an email that was a straight up offer to pay me to publish papers without peer review in the journal I edit. (I forwarded it to the appropriate ACM person, who I assume will forward it to lawyers.)

I knew this stuff happens at obscure junk journals (if you're an academic and don't ever read Retraction Watch, you should), and occasionally in special issues of otherwise serious journals. But somehow it never occurred to me that someone would even *try* to do it with a well known reputable journal, and I'm kind of shocked by how blatant the attempt was.
