Is there discussion about the @signalapp open source project, foundation, and server infrastructure having enough redundancy outside of the US in case some sort of stormtroopers crash one day in legal, digital and/or physical ways?

Serious question from someone in the EU using and contributing € to Signal but not following the project and community closely.

I do not know, but so far Signal has always been very on top of their game, I would be surprised if they haven't thought about that already, and I also would be very surprised if they announce any possible plans publicly before really needing them. No need to spill the tea to those that are the reason for it. It even seems very ill-advised to me to do that.

cannot move outside of US because its server software depends on Amazon Simple Queue Service for messaging and on Amazon DynamoDB for the database. These parts are non-free SaaS dependencies. There is no way to move #Signal server outside of AWS "cloud" without a major redesign of these core parts.

@debacle I use DeltaChat by default and the most but (luckily) Signal is relatively popular among people who otherwise use WhatsApp, and it is also the only alternative to WhatsApp that I see in use for group chats for non-tech groups.

@erebion Yes, my (mild) concern is about availability too. I use Delta Chat a primary messenger but keep using Signal with anyone who has it already.

Thank you for the recommendation. I use Delta Chat by default and this is what I pitch to my former WhatsApp contacts. I use Signal with whoever has it already and as fallback option for chat groups and audio/video calls. Threema is also a very interesting project!

Thank you! I was aware of Briar and installed it a way back (but In use Delta Chat by default). I hadn't heard of Reticulum. Yes, it's at another level, but very interesting. Reading...

@briar Beyond that, I would look into #Reticulum. It is not a single app or messaging system, but a networking base layer that can use LoRa, UHF/VHF, I2P, local Wi-Fi (and as such, Wi-Fi HaLow), and indeed whatever transfer infrastructure you could possibly have access to. Reticulum would be difficult to interrupt without locally scrambling frequencies, locating and seizing devices - basically the type of scenario where you have bigger problems to worry about than texting.

@marco
I'd be interested on your thoughts regarding Signal, referring to the current actions taken by Trump and his "Tech-Bros"?

@icaria36 @signalapp

@fasnix @debacle I watch this with worry, and Signal is certainly one messenger I can easily do without, after I've asked the little number of contacts to use something like Delta Chat instead. Or Threema, which is based in Switzerland. But Delta Chat, with its current on-boarding, has a much lower barrier of entry for non-tech users, and is very transparent with what it's doing. Development also happens in the EU.

Thanks for sharing your concerns.
I'll look into Delta Chat, and the recommended Briar as well.

@debacle @fasnix @marco @daniel For me, when it comes to convert WhatsApp users, it is important that I can just send them a #DeltaChat invite knowing that they will have an easy self-onboarding and the same features regardless of mobile or desktop OS. They just follow the invite link in whatever device they are using, install it as they install everything else, and find my contact right away. Really simple and easy for non-tech people.

@debacle @fasnix @daniel I agree, I onboarded a few people to Delta Chat recently, and it was super easy just giving them my invite link. I also connected to one of my signal contacts half an hour ago,, and the connection was established easily. The new onboarding in Delta is super convenient.

@coop The LoRa mesh boards they use to extend range are cheap, and if you don’t find a use for Reticulum, they also work with Meshtastic which is a little less capable but is currently in more common use. Both are fun to experiment with.

@debacle
Delta Chat "invite links" are about getting in contact with someone, both sides should already have an email account. If user does not have an account yet or does not have Delta Chat yet they are guided into setting it up, but there is no invitation to use some particular email (chatmail) server in the link.

@snikket_im invitations are about letting someone to create an account on some XMPP server.

@mntn @coop Oh my, this is like a whole underground society! 🙂 Thank you for the pointers.
