Reading "The Body Keeps the Score", and I'm wondering how much of autism is autism and how much of autism is trauma? I only have my perspective as a traumatized person with an autism diagnosis, and my perspective is I have no idea. #actuallyAutistic
I've asked this of my two professionals I'm lucky enough to be talking to these days. One is leaning toward just treating trauma, and one pretty adamant about focusing everyone more on autism, not in small part to bolster focused supports.
I'm worried that objectivity might be compromised by which of these explanations is more readily received, and also if we haven't been steered by that already.
@alexocado @actuallyautistic Well, it's bureaucratic, and it was supposed to be a guide like a paper map for pros to get around in the real world, not a blueprint for how to build an industry. You can't blame the screwdriver for not being able to pound in a nail. The mashup of commercialism and medicine is all around a bad deal.
Anything decided by committee is both abstracted and tainted. That doesn't mean it doesn't have its beneficial uses, they're just limited.
I didn't mean to say that the DSM isn't useful. I merely meant to say that it's also infallible and neither are allistic minds. It's a sad fact that allistic continues to mean "better" than autistic to many minds.
@alexocado @actuallyautistic It's a double whammy. Allistics were first, and it's a system of pathologizing. What's encouraging is that it's turning out to be a very civilized shift, if not the most genteel, and gentle morphing of an idea space that I've ever seen.
I've frankly given up on some allistic people. Not worth the fight. 😀
My take is that "going through life as an Autistic without sufficient help or understanding" can be pretty traumatizing. So yeah, get help for any trauma that has already happened, but try to prevent more trauma by also getting help re Autism.

Just take a look at the DSM. It's supposedly created by minds which have an easier time with nuance. To me it seems more like ignorant about nuance.
