Dansup (Pixelfed, Loops, and FediDB dev) 's treatment of Hazel, a dev that he excitedly announced was joining the Loops team only to later retract that and publicly berate her, catalogued here - dansup-open-letter.github.io/a… - is gross.

Dansup's treatment of Tobi, one of the GoToSocial devs, and the GTS project in general, recently has also been gross - mastodon.art/@welshpixie/11395…

Dansup: "The future is federated, the source is open [...] and PixelFed stands proudly with every ActivityPub project"

Meanwhile:

Loops (a Dansup project) doesn't federate (see replies to the link above)

FediDB isn't opensource (web.archive.org/web/2024123008…)

(continued from above)

There's a thread of receipts of Dansup's continued shitty behaviour going all the way back to 2019 when he was being called out for allowing Pixelfed to federate with fascist instances (and responded to that with 'we should put politics aside'): weirder.earth/@thief/113953830…

If you're a Pixelfed or Loops user, know that the developer of those apps is a racist, transphobic, bully.

🧵

#fediblock dansup of pixelfed.social and of loops.video etc. for chronic asshole behavior over the years including but not limited to harassment and appropriating AAVE. feel free to attach your receipts below since he likes to delete so many of his posts :blobcatthumbsup:

Free, open source software gives us an opportunity to move away from corporate-owned projects that inflict corporate ideals on us. It gives us an opportunity to do things differently - to approach development ethically and with compassion, to prioritise things like accessibility, community safety, and protection of marginalised people.

Unfortunately, the people who are most able to work on FOSS projects are those with the most privilege; who don't lose all of their energy, motivation,

and money fighting constant oppression and marginalisation; and the people with the most privilege are less likely to consider things like accessibility and inclusivity. The people BEST suited to FOSS projects, those who understand marginalisation, who understand the need for accessibility, who understand why strong moderation tooling is important for protecting against abuse and harassment, are those with the least amount of energy for working on those projects because society -

places them at a huge disadvantage. Who has time for developing free software when you're struggling just to survive because of the colour of your skin, your gender, your disability?

So when we see something like this - potentially great FOSS projects being managed by people who are racist, who are transphobic, who are abusive, who wield their power and ego to punch down, we need to confront it. We don't all have the ability to 'just fork it' -

Addendum, Dan's take on all this

Sensitive content

first he says GtS added the stat randomizer feature for clout: archive.ph/ANEy9

But now they're referenced as an example of how to prevent crawling for changes he made as a direct response to that same feature they implemented: archive.ph/txKLl

These are not the actions of a transparent and trustworthy person

@nicolasfolliot Dan runs pixelfed.social and pixelfed.art , but (as far as I know) all other pixelfed instances are run by other individuals, not by him. As long as you keep in mind that *any* pixelfed instance you join can't have strong moderation because of these bugs: mastodon.art/@Curator/11386660… - other instances should be okay, depending on who runs them 😀

@Ember Yet, it is popular. About 25% of the monthly active fediverse users are on pixelfed: fedidb.org/

This has all to do with people who want a replacement for Instagram.

I'm happy that the model of the fediverse insulates us at least partly from the behaviour of some devs...
