You know what MY rollercoaster is? Cleaning up after open sign-up instances (see my posts on patreon.com/c/WelshPixie1 and see what I spend most of my time doing).

'We suspended the account, of course. But not before a lot of people yelled at us.' Yeah? You've decided to have open sign ups and so nazis sometimes sign up, this is what you can expect, and people are RIGHT to yell at you for that.

'For the record, this is not preventable when registration is open.' There's your clue!!

'The only way to guarantee no rogue accounts is with closed reg' Right. This is why, if you value safety over growth, you close sign ups. You can either spend your admin time cleaning up reports of nazis and dealing with the fallout from rightfully pissed off people, or you can spend that admin time going through account requests. I know I would (and do) rather spend a bit of time every day manually vetting sign ups so that the Black, disabled, queer, neurospicy, etc. people on .art are safe -

- instead of making bullshit 'please stop yelling at us, just be nice' posts when we DON'T take the time to do that and oops a nazi got in again!

'But we react as quickly as possible' Wouldn't need to react quickly if you had closed sign ups. Reacting quickly to a nazi getting in is not as good as simply not letting nazis in.

'Which requires reports from y’all.' Hey, don't put the moderation failures of your instance onto your community. If you can't run it safely, don't run it.

'For every nazi account you may see for a brief moment, you don’t see hundreds of others that we managed to catch before you saw it.' - 'We do tons of pre-emptive work behind the scenes.'

You're getting hundreds of nazi accounts signing up that you're spending your time swatting and 'doing tons of pre-emptive work' instead of just *closing sign ups* and spending that time vetting accounts instead??

What this tells me, again, is that you care more about growth and will whine about all the hard volunteer work you have to put in in order to HAVE that growth at the risk of community safety, instead of spending LESS effort just turning on account verification, saving yourselves mod work, saving your and every community connected to yours the trauma of seeing a nazi popping up in their feed.

'It hurts me that a nazi slipped through today. Like, it crushes my soul and makes me sad. And I want for us to prevent that.'

Obviously not THAT much or you'd just close sign ups.

Preventing it is real easy. mas.to/admin/settings/registra… > 'approval required for sign up'.

:A_BlobCat_RollingEyes:

Fucking white guys, I swear. Let a Nazi in and then it's 'oh no people yelled at me, I'm the victim, this is so sad' :blobfoxtableflip:

@catzilla Because white dudes.

"In white supremacy culture, the only dialogue permitted is that which does not make people uncomfortable. Only when biases are not challenged, and inadequacies are not exposed, is “open dialogue” permitted."

While I agree that closed registration greatly mitigates bad actors from getting in, I do have to question how you can position yourself as an expert on the matter while you've got a public blocklist where you've blocked out numerous instances for the crime of ... not running Mastodon. Instances full of trans people, full of marginalized people, blocked from interacting with mastodon.art, because they're not using the software you've deemed appropriate for engaging within the fediverse.

@cmdr_nova from our about page right above the server blocks,

'An explanation of terms on our blocklist
Alt-Fedi - used when an instance federates with, associates with, and shares the culture of, instances that don't moderate (and in many cases, actively support) things like harassment, bigotry, hate speech, trolling, far-right ideologies, and generally abusive behaviour.'

Again, show me the entries in our blocklist that are there for not running Mastodon.

Hold on while I do digital labor for you, as you demand

akko.wtf/about is not a far right instance

outerheaven.club/about is not a far right instance

labyrinth.zone/about is not a far right or racist instance, and I can concretely make that assertion _because I am a moderator there_

These are 3 examples of instances of mostly marginalized people minding their business that you've deemed in-league with nazis, from what I can tell, for no verifiable reason whatsoever

So I ask you again, how can you possibly position yourself as an expert on any of this, when there is obviously something ulterior going on here

in reply to Calligrafae

Or maybe, you act without context, and on knee-jerk decisions before admins and moderators have a chance to act on reports. You can't talk about community management if the way you talk would assume that admins and moderators should be clairvoyant rather than vigilant in dealing with reports.

Should instances close down registration? Yeah

Should people understand how community management works and give people a little bit of a grace period so that they can properly deal with reports, especially since 99% of the people doing this on the fediverse are unpaid volunteers?

Also yeah
