Mastodon Pro Tip: Ever miss "that good post" you made a while back? Just search for it! Type in the search bar:

from:me word

And there it is.

Great tip! Thanks... makes me wonder how many more some:thing formatted search filters are available. Is there a list somewhere?

Sorry, just answered my own question... there is an ephemeral list of suggestions that pops up when you click into the search box (using the web). It goes away when you type the first character so I never get to read it. That's on me obviously! 🤷‍♂️

Found the tips page. "Mastodon Advanced Search Guide and Operators" Thanks!

Yes! I use that a lot too.

Important detail - no space between the colon and the "me" or it won't work.

in reply to Ross of Ottawa

For me, I'm most often looking for my old pie-related posts to enjoy the old pics again…

Good reminder, thanks!

Two things that are good to understand here, I think (tell me if you know better!):

First, this will only work if your instance has the search functionality enabled.

Second, you can search for other people’s posts too, but *only those you have somehow interacted with* (favoriting is probably enough).

in reply to Johann z. Baag (ej af Puss-B.)

@zenfin The only thing needed to search your own posts is that your server has enabled the search feature and has at least version 4.2. That's it.
in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

There are definitely posts that I don’t find with the freeword search, from people I follow. I wonder how this works...
in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

That's what I been using on here for a while to find old picture posts I did too. Also use it on Bluesky. 😀
in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

here's another one if you're looking for a post you liked or interacted with

in:library word

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

you can also use ~in:library~ to search for posts you have interacted with and other people's threads using ~from:<@username>~
in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

There’s a prerequisite to this, you’re Mastodon instance must have an Elasticsearch backend, which is not installed by default.
in reply to steve mookie kong

@mookie This is true. Most good servers have it. Those who don't, notice it very soon after trying this 😀
in reply to steve mookie kong

@mookie I run a not most good server apparently. I’d be upset, but I don’t know what the previous sentence means.
in reply to steve mookie kong

@mookie @fuzzface Yeah the Elasticsearch is a heavy process. We have a separate server for the search engine and that's often recommended, because it eats up your RAM.

It works great. I just tried search word “dogs” and it found not only posts with the word dog, but all my dog pictures as well.

Now if I can only find a way to find those posts I read and want to repost elsewhere, but forgot to bookmark or repost!

@ploum What if they are fundamentally misogynists, racists, supremacists, homophobics, transphobics, patriarchal, despises the poor (is there a word for that in phobia?)... and therefore they are enthusiastic about the idea of pushing these hatreds globally with Putin.

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

Also works with hashtags!

Or if you're a desktop person you can just visit your profile URL and add "/tagged/<thehashtag>" on the end, which I usually do as it's quicker than using the search box 😁

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

woah, that's how you filter by author? I never knew that, and I needed that a bit ago.

Thanks for the advice! Is there a list of search parameters somewhere for me to look at?

When you select the search field, the dropdown opens and you'll see the most common ones. AFAIK there is no full list anywhere right now, but here's a good unofficial one: lucahammer.com/2024/04/25/mast…
