First thing that sprang to mind, antiX.
It does icewm very well, already very windows-familiar. Lots of helper gui scripts and automations around too, out of the box.
Yeah, I've not been shopping around for that use-case for a while. Could be worth checking out the distros specifically aimed at serving windows-refugees. ^like Robin's suggestion of LinuxLite.
Crazier, there are things like Slax and Puppy based distros... a little askew from conventions, but, they do get picked up with enthusiasm by some (... like my uncle... I could have swore he'd have preferred ScientificLinux... y'never know).
Finally I installed Linux Mint for my dad , can't remember the reason why, maybe I was tired of choosing at some point 😅 Next I'm gonna try Linux Lite , maybe more suitable for this age group /windoze user ... But so far I'm happy to see my dad satisfied that his laptop is working again, starting quickly, apps opening quickly, etc.... Mission accomplished, we have a new recruit
The kiosk thing, no, it feels a bit too "read-only" ,
I tried antiX (in the form of "MX linux" ) on my own old MacBook , thanks Digit. I still have to use it on the long run to see if it's my cup of tea , but so far the vibe seems good 😍
@pascal macaigne Excellent! Linux Mint is not made for Windows users like Linux Lite is, yet it's the most popular choice among users in that group. Plenty of good support in the forums, too.
