@Lynette
Allow me to suggest something with a touch of both: Cahokia Jazz, by Francis Spufford. Noir detective story set in an alternate historical north america where Cahokia is the biggest city in the Mississippi basin north of New Orleans (St Louis is a nearby backwater village), 1920s Hollywood is (I think) Spanish territory, and Alaska is home to White Russians fleeing the revolution. Just the right amount of action, poetry, and romance. In that order.

Haven’t gotten to it yet myself, but The Ministry of Time is a recent book I’ve heard lots of praise for. Maybe something like that would hit the spot?
