I'm in a reading slump. Anyone have any suggestions in the genres of fantasy, scifi, or I'd even switch it up with a good mystery. No romantacy, please. #Bookstodon #books #reading #scifi #fantasy #mystery #detective
@Lynette Allow me to suggest something with a touch of both: Cahokia Jazz, by Francis Spufford. Noir detective story set in an alternate historical north america where Cahokia is the biggest city in the Mississippi basin north of New Orleans (St Louis is a nearby backwater village), 1920s Hollywood is (I think) Spanish territory, and Alaska is home to White Russians fleeing the revolution. Just the right amount of action, poetry, and romance. In that order.
one scifi book I've read this year that I’m recommending to all that ask: “The Space Between Worlds” by Micaiah Johnson. There is a bit of romantic tension, but it's not obvious where it's going, and it's not the main thread of the book.
Haven’t gotten to it yet myself, but The Ministry of Time is a recent book I’ve heard lots of praise for. Maybe something like that would hit the spot?
@AngelicAura You’re the second person to recommend those books to me. 😊 and I know I have listened to previews on Audible. They do sound like a lot of fun.
@jendefer No I have not. I will add to my to Read list though. I’ve gotten lots of good recommendations for mastodon, this should definitely get me out of my reading slump.
@FredJohansen Yes I have. I haven’t read all the books in the series though, just the first one. Maybe I will finish it. It’s really interesting reading the sci-fi of today and the sci-fi that Asimov wrote. You can definitely tell it’s influenced by the time and the culture it’s written in.
