If you're looking to switch away from fascist enabling unaccountable tech giants these directories are all pretty good in their own way:

1. switching.software/
2. privacyguides.org/
3. alternativeto.net/
4. ethical.net/resources/
5. selfh.st/apps/
6. european-alternatives.eu/
7. prism-break.org/en/

There is also e.g. this nice bit of guidance too optoutproject.net/the-cyber-cl…

If you're specifically looking for European companies/products, this might be interesting as well
european-alternatives.eu/

if you're not into enabling colonialism then best to avoid anything using the .io domain name
in reply to lucie digitální

@luciedigitalni yeah, I've read about that, but I don't control what domain other people use and some useful services and directory still use that TLD 🤷 should we make perfect the enemy of the good? Not sure we should TBH
in reply to Josef Davies-Coates

@luciedigitalni but I've just been pointed at privacyguides.org/ so I've replaced it with that community effort (with a more ethical domain)
in reply to Josef Davies-Coates

i think any business that either doesn't care or hasn't done basic due diligence about a key element of their branding should be avoided. colonialism and fascism are closely related so you're really undermining your entire point by making a distinction
in reply to lucie digitální

@luciedigitalni that's a totally valid viewpoint to have, of course (and you don't need me to tell you that either!). But I'm a little more forgiving. It was very widely used by lots of people before anyone really knew about the issues.
in reply to lucie digitální

@luciedigitalni no need for apologies 🙂

Whilst the issues have already been there it was quite late in the day that they became more widely know (and I'd bet the vast majority of people are still living in ignorance about it).

in reply to lucie digitální

it simply isn't widely known, even now. It's an unknown unknown for most people. Not something they'd even think about potentially needing to do due diligence on.

Besides aren't you meant to be "learning to be more tolerant and empathetic. " 🙂 😉 teehee

Excellent collection 👍🏼

My project to get away from all these terrible companies is going great. Already got rid of lots of google stuff, deleted everything Meta, installed various apps via fdroid and more.

Not used amazon in years, never been on X.

It is actually a lot easier than I thought. 🤷🏼☺️

What I don't seem to be able to find is an antivirus app...

in reply to chef 😎

@ruedi just stop using Windows? I've been running Linux for decades (Ubuntu since it's existed, and other distributions before that) and have never had any antivirus apps now had any issues with viruses.

i've never understood the centralization of services and the internet. This was never intended! Host on your own or use local providers. Most obviously your clients or service users are in the same country like yours. You can even use diffrent systems and domains for other countries. When did that happen that we use one domain and large scale systems only.
in reply to (roll m3tti)

@m3tti yeah, I use an amazing piece of source available software called @cloudron to self host loads of open source web app. Cloudron is imho the best of it's type but see also all the other options I and others listed here forum.cloudron.io/topic/10000/…
in reply to Josef Davies-Coates

It's good that there are already many alternatives for software and online services.
But what worries me is that we are far away from smartphone alternatives to Android and Apple.
in reply to datendefekt

you can get degoogled versions of Android. I run @e_mydata @murena on my phone e.foundation/e-os/ 😊

in reply to helen varley jamieson

@helenvarley @e_mydata @murena @datendefekt nice. I've just got a Teracube myself, which doesn't have as good supply chain but does have a good long warranty, a great repair/ replacement service, and a replaceable battery, which is better than most these days 😀
in reply to Josef Davies-Coates

@helenvarley @e_mydata @murena Third-party degoogled ROM are a good stopgap, but Android is not fully open source. It's still dependent on Google for development and on the phone vendors for hardware drivers.

A true alternative would need to be a separate operating system, and at best separate hardware.

in reply to datendefekt

@datendefekt @helenvarley @e_mydata @murena back in the day I had Linux powered Nokia with built in keyboard, that was fun. I guess pine64.org/devices/pinephone/ is pretty cool similar thing these days
in reply to Open Risk

@openrisk I didn't only post this on here 😉 but even if I had lots of people here still don't know about nor use lots of other alternatives. But yeah, it's had way more engagement here than most other places.

Another alternative to GoogleMaps / Apple Maps, offline and libre (I haven´t tested it yet)
organicmaps.app/es/
in reply to Boriel

@boriel I've tried that a bit, not bad in some instances. See also magicearth.com/
in reply to 🏳️‍🌈🎃🇧🇷Luana🇧🇷🎃🏳️‍🌈

@luana what specifically do you most dislike about Brave? All the crypto stuff? or something else? Never used it myself. But I'd suggest feeding back to them instead of me 🙂 e.g. via community.ethical.net/t/sugges…

Don't forget the cyber cleanse from @cyberlyra optoutproject.net/the-cyber-cl…
in reply to Ross Young

@MightyRedPanda @cyberlyra that's a nice blog series to be sure, but it's not a directory of alternatives in the same way. I also liked this related by different article from a while ago gizmodo.com/life-without-the-t…
in reply to Josef Davies-Coates

Super! Thanks.

I'd like to know who is not trying to move away from fascist enabling unaccountable tech giants and their apps, so I could block them.
