@gkrnours @eliasp @codemonkeymike @frameworkcomputer And in contrast to a Framework computer, in case MNT ever does something you sincerely dislike so much that you never want to buy anything from them again, you can *literally* just fork their work and build your own. This is not possible with a Framework computer as many seem to be realizing only now. Framework never was the open hardware that many advertised it for. The MNT Reform on the other hand has been that from the beginning.

I had a similar dilemma last year when I was in the market for a new laptop, and many of the 'cool companies' were fairly obviously 'drinking the tech-bro cool-aid'.

Finally went with Tuxedo, who I believe are in Germany. Lovely machine, and fast af by my standards (I'm not a gamer!). It came with their own Linux distro out-of-box, which is fine, which I then replaced with my beloved Garuda.

(Edited to correct that they are in Germany, not Austria)

@growlph @rolenthedeep That's actually the most maddening part about this for me. We're talking about what amounts to a personalized customization of an existing Linux distro, namely Arch.

There's nothing technologically interesting about this project at all. They're not funding something foundationaly important like OpenSSH or a filesystem or a browser. The only notable thing about it is the cult of personality behind it.Throwing money at that *is* an explicitly political move.

@growlph @rolenthedeep Oh, yeah, I'm a huge fan of tiling window managers and keyboard-driven interfaces. DWM has been my daily driver for years.

I guess my point is just that I get rankled by the term "distro" being thrown around. This hasn't earned that title. And it makes zero sense for this, of all the truly important projects in the world, to be getting this kind of funding.

thanks for showing more spine and integrity than @frameworkcomputer! :blobsalute:

  • It's clear that you took time and clearly considered the existing evidence (which was obvious, but still!) rather than doing a rash decision.

I hope that you guys will find a different company / project willing to see your #integrity as inspiring enough to at least consider hiring you.

  • As for #Framework, my disapoointment is immesureable, as it makes it clear to me that I should not have shelved the #NUCbook!

there is an army of social engineers ready to push wedges into our community to divide us over issues unrelated to our core shared values, twisting them beyond the breaking point. I can't tell whether this case was one of those, but it is a weakness in our community that makes us vulnerable and worse off, and it's been actively exploited for quite some time. we have to patch ASAP. I wish I had a solution, but all I can see is that people are often too ready to condemn and silence and cancel over a whiff of twisted evidence, and too intolerant to differences, particularly when it comes to tolerance of differences. there is probably such a thing as misguided tolerance, but rejecting people who haven't learned that yet, and who aren't ready to learn that yet, doesn't strike me as a positive move; rejecting people who tolerate such misguided tolerance doesn't either. how many levels removed from that chain must one be to avoid cancellation? heck, maybe I'm too (misguidedly?) tolerant to diversity myself. will that get me canceled again? 😞
