But intruding on someone’s mentions, when they’re posting about racism? Ignoring their pain? To defend… an inanimate piece of software?

You don’t wanna be their millionth reply-guy, all snippy with patronising “””advice”””:

1. Listen & be supportive
2. Keep note of ideas and solutions
3. Implement, feature-request/boost these improvements, with credit (or better yet, with payment)

@strypey the mastodon-specific context for this post is the existence of, since the early days of Mastodon's existence, a pattern whereby users who aren't whitey note that their experience of Mastodon is characterised by racism and hostility exacerbated by design features, providing documented examples and proposing improvements, and users who are whitey respond by telling them that mastodon is perfect, the features can't be changed, and black people are just using it wrong.

i remember reading @mekkaokereke 's delineation of the #harassment of #black folk around a year ago

essentially using nonpublic #replyguy bullshit. other methods

you can say "well just block and move on"

but the reality is it is a degradation of your experience and enjoyment of #mastodon and drives you from the #fediverse

targeted harassment is not unique to mastodon

but it is a real, here. and we should care

it needs to be addressed with a beefier toolset
