So my advice to artists, musicians, creators, makers in the EU: Add a #Liberapay option to your profile. It might not become your main source of income/donations, but it could add a growing amount of supporters that care about a little bit more EU focus.

It looks like the SEPA payment process operates through Stripe and, therefore, is not confined within EU borders. I'm currently trying to set this up (as a recipient) and am told that I need a Stripe account for Direct Debit payments.

I don’t believe this is entirely correct. My understanding is that Stripe (or PayPal) is always the payment processor, so even if you opt to pay by SEPA DD, it will still be Stripe who debit your account and credit the recipient's. Stripe's T&Cs still apply. As far as I have been able to deduce, the donor's options with Liberapay are also dependent on which payment processor the recipient has chosen for receipt. Liberapay are not acting as a "wallet". Paying someone solely through SEPA would required knowledge of their IBAN. It seems to me that all Liberapay does is allow recipients to keep this information secret.
We desperately need some alternative, non-US, payment processor.

I would also encourage them to reintroduce some sort of "wallet" facility. In my own case, the people I want to pay have limited themselves to PayPal only, so Liberapay doesn't allow me to avoid US card and payment providers at all. 😞
I'm cautiously hopeful that Wero and/or Gnu Thaler may fill this gap before too much longer.

You still have to use stripe or paypal to *receive* donations though. We really need an european alternative for those, too.

Liberapay is nice, but they use the US based payment processor Stripe, so that sours things a bit.
