You do not want your genetic data to end up in a bankruptcy court, where it ends up in the hands of the highest bidder. If you ever used 23andMe, do this now.
Make sure to follow the instructions in the "To Destroy Your 23andMe Test Sample" and "To Revoke Permission for Your Genetic Data to be Used for Research" sections *before* deleting your account or you won't be able to log in to do so.

When I found out that my information had been compromised through them, I contacted them and asked why they had kept my deleted account information for years after it had been deleted. I learned that deleting didn't mean deleting. They then manually deleted my information, confirmed it was gone.

I've done a shit ton of stupid things in my life (so far), but one thing I have never done is willingly and voluntarily provided my DNA to 23andMe or Ancestry.

- and also cross my fingers *really* hard that doing so actually works. Remember, even deleting a file on your own harddrive doesn't actually delete it; it just removes it from the index. Most platforms offer some sort of "undo deletion" function, which they can do because your stuff remains on the server, even when you think you've deleted it.
If this data is considered valuable there's a very real possibility somebody will keep it. As we also know, illegality is no deterrence.

I would argue this will be “remote data processing” under the CRA, which brings it into at least that scope by 2027 (hence, not “not [..] at all”). But considering the impact, that might not be the most suitable regulatory tool to address the risk at scale, nor does it address the cloud-provider-geopolitics angle. Oh, and cloud connected inverters are not considered “important” or “critical” products under the CRA.
I was afraid this would happen someday, so I took my solar panel installation off the WiFi. No more pretty pictures on how much power I generated, but the solar panels work fine without.

Recently a Dutch hacker was able to take control of 4 million solar panel installations (FTM (Dutch), Euractiv, Victor Gevers). And this wasn’t the first time something like this has happened either (PV Magazine).
@bashae When I got my panels updated I specified an inverter that gave me local access & had well maintainted homesasistant support.. lots of them don't. It's a pity there aren't enough of us to demand this is the norm.
@ely @tony @bashae Connecting Solax to HA and disconnecting it from the cloud was matter of 15 minutes. Not sure how available Solax inverters are on other markets. Due to quite unique legislation 3-phase inverters are required here, so our selection of inverters is specific (Solax, Goodwe, Victron primarily).
But true, total madness that you must freak yourself into these devices. Better would be to enforce the Tuya platform to allow for third party integration and "disable shut off" function.
I have considered buying one of those HomeWizard monitoring devices. Data would still go to the cloud, but at least it would only be for retrieving data, not for remote control.
When I got the panels installed on my house here in the United States; I insisted on the option that operates independently of the internet, since part of the reason for getting them was to have power when the grid goes down.
That they cannot be remotely bricked is a good side effect.
(There is a "weather alert" feature that is supposed to allow remote changes to system settings in advance of storms. I turned that off.)
I agree totally. All the interfaces from power inverters, batterys and the comming smartmeter gateways needs to be regulated. All the devices which are allready running should also became checked for back doors. China is flooding the european maket with stuff. About 10 years ago I remember a lot of stories about insecure internet-connected SCADA controls of large power stations. I wonder if that has been fixed, and how security compares between traditional power stations and decentralised systems like rooftop solar

But ISPs either don’t offer IPv6, or offer it on some limited way, like some German providers changing customer’s prefix every 24 hours. @teledyn @RoyBrander @dkmackinnon Well, we in the Senate had a reasonable general concern that Bill S-7 was unconstitutional and a wholly inadequate response to the Alberta court ruling. And so, we amended the bill substantively to change the new standard to "reasonable grounds to suspect" - a much higher test. And we sent the amended bill to the House. The government was NOT happy. And the bill died on the order paper.
@teledyn @RoyBrander @dkmackinnon So you could say that the Senate killed the bill - but only passively aggressively. The upshot? As I understand it, in Alberta - and in Ontario - Canada Border Services can't search devices. In other parts of the country, they can. It's absurd. But as we see these stories from the US, I feel more than ever that the independent Senate did the right thing.

If it were a SCC decision, there is no question that the section(s) in question would be "read out" of the Act, nationally. But since this was an ABCA decision, I don't remember the effect. It's still federal legislation, and it doesn't make sense for it to be applied differently across the country. 1/

Qwant 🇫🇷, the French search engine, is probably the biggest European engine that exists today.
But we often hear that Qwant is actually Microsoft Bing in disguise. How much of this is true?
They have their own crawling tools and algorithms, but they can use Bing's results as a supplement when people search for images or things where Qwant isn't strong enough yet.
Do you remember when that happened? We just checked, but can't seem to reproduce the issue.
Qwant had a few hiccups in the beginning (some issues with the former founder, some misleading marketing, etc.), but they were acquired in 2023 by a new company (Synfonium) and it looks like they're rebuilding it.

If anyone wants true independent non-US search engine, they could try the UK-based mojeek.com. However, its search results are still lacking as a result of them building their index entirely from scratch.

as a proud Schleswig-Holsteiner, I can say that our government has understood this and is moving towards a Linux desktop and Open-Source. And it is the right thing to do. Now more than ever.

Windows is obviously a very bad choice (especially for non-US governments!) but Linux has drawbacks too—I'd rather see an emphasis on open source, security, and consistent UX. Maybe include BSD along with Linux? Or re-start progress in OS design!

Linux distros reduce PC disposal. They reduce the frequency of PC replacement. They lead to overwhelming budget savings. They will increase system availability, promote cross-platform support of administrative contact points, and make government open to all. There is nothing wrong with that.
AFAIK, the state of accessibility is improving but clearly not on par with the proprietary OSes. If accessibility is an afterthought and not taken seriously, I don't see how it could work for governments without excluding some of their staff.
@biou That's something reasonably easily fixable (compared to the spending of governments and the public sector, at least). They could (and should) actively address this as part of the move, not wait passively for it.
@larsmb maybe large open source projects should already actively address accessibility themselves like what they are doing for security. What does it mean for a project to deliberately exclude users based on their disabilities?
@biou Yes. But the strongest way to influence what projects do is to do (or pay for it to be done). I'm not saying appeal to ethical obligations don't work nor should stop, only that it helps to give someone a strong incentive - and bandwidth to do more than their bare needs.

Remember, even deleting a file on your own harddrive doesn't actually delete it; it just removes it from the index. Most platforms offer some sort of "undo deletion" function, which they can do because your stuff remains on the server, even when you think you've deleted it.
If this data is considered valuable there's a very real possibility somebody will keep it. As we also know, illegality is no deterrence.
