If you want to try PeerTube, the official PeerTube app IS NOT currently a good way to do it. Due to silly app store rules it is missing key features, and there are much better alternatives.

If you just want to watch and interact with PeerTube videos, it's easiest to do it from within Mastodon. For example try visiting @michellemay

If you prefer to use a PeerTube account, use your PeerTube server's website or web app. Here's how to install web apps: fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-a…

As far as I know yes:

f-droid.org/packages/org.frama…

It still seems to be missing key features, perhaps because the app is mainly written with app stores in mind?

It will probably get better in the future as they add the features in, but it's been difficult for them due to the app store rules.

At the moment I'd strongly recommend the web app instead as it gives you all the features right now and totally avoids all the restrictions of app stores. I use it myself with my own instance.

I'm not saying it's unusable, I'm just saying it's not currently the best way of doing it 🙂

For example you can't sign in with your PeerTube account on the official app, which has caused a lot of confusion for some new people. Usually when there is an official app for a platform, you can sign in with your account on that platform.

This isn't the developers' fault, they are having to navigate some ridiculous rules on the app stores. That's why I recommend their web app instead.

It's true but it's not the developers' fault, they are being tied down by app store rules that hold them responsible for content viewed through the app, which doesn't make any sense for a federated network. It would be like holding browser makers responsible for what's on the web.

Web apps lets developers totally sidestep the app stores, so federated networks tend to be better on web apps or websites.

My personal favourite app to follow all of my preferred creators on PeerTube, Odysee and many other platforms is GrayJay (also on FDroid). If only the YouTube plugin worked without login 🙄 (but I'm sticking to NewPipe for that). GrayJay is a wonderful app, it focuses on creators rather than platforms, you can't login to PT but it lets you install a specific instance instead of using SepiaSearch and it has its own polycentric comments system, which is interesting.
