Few thoughts/questions:
1. Are you notified when someone quoteposts one of your posts you so that you can remove it if you don't want to be quoted?
2. Is there a way to lock a post such that it can not be quoteposted?
3. Is there a general way to say you don't want any of your posts to be quoteposted?

4. If someone detaches their quotepost from one of your posts are you notified so you can either remove or edit the original post?

Mastodon needs to grow up about this.

The argument goes that it is a potential way to abuse someone. Let's say that someone posts something that someone else wants to ridicule. They can quotepost the post along with some abusive comments and @ mention a dozen of their friends who can do likewise, thereby heaping abuse on the poster. This happened on Twitter.
So a lot of the discussion centers around how to do QP's without them becoming such a means of abusing others.

Someone else posts something laudatory, an excellent example, needs additional content.
Can't have that, can we?

Those are examples of potential good use of quoteposts. We can also hypothesize situations when someone posts something really nice and a dozen racist jerks tear them to shreds. The trick is enabling the former while providing a mechanism to deal with the latter.

There’s a larger issue than quoting that will get you what you want. The issue you really want to advocate for is to have all posts federated so that when I quote a person like this, it will show up on your instance mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra…

What Robert is saying is that when he references a post he has to provide a link to the "original page" and then to get back to the "local page" you have to...
...and if you are lost already you are not alone. You are absolutely correct that this breaks context and makes Mastodon infuriating for most users.

Edit: So much frustration here concerning user friendliness actually derives from the local vs original page necessitated by the Fediverse architecture. If quoteposts can address this then it will be a big improvement to Mastodon.

Not going to address if we are all adults here.
But you mention blocking. That is a means that people have for protecting themselves from abuse. What is being discussed is providing means of users protecting themselves from things this new feature might make possible.

in reply to Mastodon Migration • • •The trick is removing racists from Mastodon, and this is how we find them.
okanogen TheEnemyFromWithin
in reply to Mastodon Migration • • •Yeah, it happened to me, and i blocked all of them and nobody could see what they referenced.
Very simple.

The point is not that QPs are bad. There is lots of justification for having them, and we will have them. The point is that (and Bluesky is discovering this too) like any good feature, it needs to be implemented with regard to how it can be abused and mechanism made available to stem the abusive modalities to the extent reasonable and possible.
