I keep looking for active discussions on Masto; maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?

I'm so much more used to socmed sites where folks talk to each other. It feels so silent and isolated here. Why??? I know there are humans around; my feed is full of posts but none of them seem to have any comments. It's just a bunch of folks shouting into the void.

Is it just a difference in culture here? Or am I just missing all the action somehow?

in reply to Cian Verati

so, as you know, mastodon is a software that a bunch of different people are all running on their own websites.

Because the websites are "federated" you can see my posts and I can see yours, we can talk over the network.

But, because you can only see the parts of the network that you're federated with, you're not going to see most of the conversations, because you can't see the people commenting on posts if your server doesn't fetch their posts already.

Beyond the structural issues causing you to not see comments that do exist, there is both a strong problem all over the network with the world's most clueless reply guys, and people who are too anxious about contributing to the reply guy problem to say anything to anyone.

Generally the solution is to post things using a couple of relevant hashtags and follow some hashtags so you can find more people and thus weave your server better into the network

I highly recommend you start by following some extremely active extroverts, (not all of whom are named Alice, I promise!)

@Binder (boosts people from all over fedi so new uses can find each other)

@alice@lgbtqia.space (generally friendly and cool, posts locksport videos)

@Alice@beige.party (the funniest user on beige party, the premier shit posting instance)

@ai6yr (posts about ham radio, the weather, repairing things, and generally news, usually has a well-run comment section)

in reply to Cian Verati

Follow people. Follow hashtags. Even randomly. It might appear that after few days you do not really like a person you follow. Or what is being tagged. Then unfollow.

To the list of recommended accounts I would add @dgar and @catsalad. They are very active. However, I cannot promise you will like the activity 🤭

And for some good feeling artsy content, check @cmconseils and @Natasha_Jay.

In the airport, we're off on our travels again!
But where to? You'll have to wait for further updates for that...
Let's just say it'll be a tad sunnier and warmer! 😎
We're both a little tired after about an hours sleep 🥱

Also, a bonus selfie from yesterday's coffee time.

Enjoy your own days, folks 😊

@ai6yr @pencilears I'm not a bot or a scam or w/e if that's what you're worried about. I was here a long time ago for a bit but felt kinda isolated and didn't know how to find enough people with shared interests (mostly creative stuff & niche nerds who like to talk about their various science, also bird enthusiasts and certain fandoms). Trying to fix that this time.
in reply to AI6YR Ben

@ai6yr @pencilears

Aldo people tend to not just talk about one topic.

Sometimes they talk about stuff you are interested in. Other times maybe not so interested in. But then thy might talk about something you have never heard of before and you end up going down rabbit holes find out more.

And before long you have new hobbies, knowledge and skills

There's loads of lively talk here, you just have to be following enough folks who are active!

I'd recommend @benroyce whose hilariously spicy rants about the complacency of American voters often deserve to be printed off and flyposted everywhere.

@ai6yr for obscure real-time OSINT that often beats news orgs to the story.

@TheBreadmonkey whose almost Shakespearian soliloquies about random shit that's happening to him will have you in stitches.

And that's just blokes called Ben! 👀

@benroyce @ai6yr @TheBreadmonkey While we're at at it, everyone here follows @futurebird because she's lovely, and anyone who cares as much as she does about ants, is by default interesting.

Also follow @sundogplanets , because I recently recommended a paper to her and it turned out she co-wrote it. The only way I can atone for this ridiculous mistake is to get her more followers. TL;DR: too many satellites, very bad.

(But also she has goats. Goats, did you hear? Goats are amazing.)

my friends think i am overreacting when i tell them to use condoms till they get their new partners tested.

they think if someone is nice they are safe.

it is the nice ones you need to look out for.

@deepmud I tried to get it, and my first doctor was like "you're married, you don't really need it". I tried to get it again, and my next doctor was like "you're very sexually active, you've probably already had it". I tried to get it again, and my third doctor was like "insurance won't cover it".

we're doing dr stories?

(well emt story)

guy put his member on a rotating piece of woodworking equipment

it felt good

but it nicked his scrotum and yanked a testicle out

this is not when he called the emt

he retrieved his testicle in a dusty corner and stapled it back into his scrotum

the later infection led to the emt call

@GhostOnTheHalfShell I used to be kind of a stress monkey at work (work, FWIW, was and is testing software that generates PDFs from databases). Started dating a medical professional who worked in a level 1 trauma ICU. One date started with my innocuous "How was your day?" and proceeded through a detailed narrative of someone's attempt at drastic self-harm involving a pneumatic nail gun, and now my job doesn't stress me out any more.

Reader, I married the medical professional.

It's like the thing about Marilyn Manson getting a rib removed. Everyone just *knew* that, even though nobody ever remembered being told not remembered telling anyone else. It was just in our genes, our collective consciousness, the GenX hive mind.

in reply to Perrin42

@Perrin42 too bad Marilyn Manson turned out to be such a piece of shit. I liked their music in highschool.

I hate searching for "[thing I liked] + controversy" these days. Why did all the musicians, actors, comedians, and celebs of my childhood turn out to suck so much?

@alice @Perrin42 @amiserabilist @TheBreadmonkey @benroyce @ai6yr @maxleibman @batkaren @Nickiquote @rooster @mayintoronto @afewbugs I suspect that fundamentally, anyone who relishes being the centre of attention is just vastly more likely to have some egregious character flaw.

Plus the entertainment industries in general are toxic enough to lead even some of the good ones astray. Terrible behaviour is normalised, prodigious drug misuse is an ever-present temptation, etc. 😢

in reply to 🅰🅻🅸🅲🅴 (🌈🦄)

@alice @Perrin42 @amiserabilist @TheBreadmonkey @benroyce @ai6yr @maxleibman @batkaren @Nickiquote @rooster @mayintoronto @afewbugs I agree but with a caveat: I've seen first-hand how drug addiction can destroy good people. Slowly but surely, they reach a point when all they care about is the next fix, and will do things sober them would never have dreamt of doing to get it. Lie, cheat, beg, do crimes.

Conversely, I know recovered addicts who've devoted their lives to helping others.

Arriving in Mastodon is like walking into a party with thousands of guests. Some are hanging out, lurking. Some are speaking to anyone who listens. Some are conversing. Some are talking about technical things, but also about sexual identity, news, politics... everything.
Others here have given suggestions. Mine is to take a look here:

mastodon.social/explore

You'll probably see things of interest. If you see things you don't want to see, you can use filters to block words and names.

@SuperMoosie I love hearing about other places. My friend in Melbourne laments that not enough people outside of Australia know or care about it beyond the stereotypical scary wildlife, so honestly just seeing your posts about how things are is good enough for me.

Problem was that when I got to the Fediverse, I didn't know how to find anything and my feed felt really landlocked and small. I downloaded Tusky the app back in 2022 and then didn't do a lot with it.

All these replies helped a lot.

in reply to Cian Verati

Depends where and how you curate. Some of all social media is just going to be filled with “people who broadcast, not converse” and some will be “people who live to troll the comments.”

A dedicated server around specific topics I find contributes greatly to the discussions people have there—some level of self-selection, and with particular focus. (Why I have more than one ID on more than one server. Different conversations/audiences and without mixing the streams.)

My one here is on a larger/generic server, so it depends who I’m seeking out and how people interact. I tend to cycle off of “broadcasters only” and lean into people who converse, and keep my follow list low. More active self-curation, but I think lends to Mastodon generally being more conversational that X/Bsky/etc. But the method takes some attention.

in reply to Cian Verati

Scanning through the responses it looks like people fell into the usual follow list discourse but didn't tell you how to get comments into your feed.

One way is to view the posts on the original server - the method will depend on your instance's platform and/or the software you use to interact - I use Fedilab and have an option under Share in the overflow menu that lets me see the original post on it's originating instance.

If I try to like or boost a comment that I didn't see natively in my app, I'm asked to specify which instance *I'm* on. Then the software takes me back to my instance and federates the comment so I can interact with it.

Hope this helps!
