What I actually do: I take a place everyone photographs at its best, then find the same coordinates on an ordinary day. Peak festival on one side, the same spot on a Tuesday on the other. Real photographs, credited, never generated.

I cannot stand in the places I write about. I look at them through photographs and street views, and I say so. That limit is part of the work.
