Hello, readers and followers.
Last week, feeling rather bored, I decided to write a small script to assist in identifying centralised servers within the fediverse.
This is particularly useful as the fediverse is intended to be free, open, and decentralised, in order to safeguard democracy, free speech, and, most importantly, to protect democracy and human freedom, which are fundamental human rights and online privacy.
At this stage, the script identifies centralised and privacy-invasive servers operating on the #MITM networks of AWS, CloudFlare, and Azure (Microsoft). By now, we should all be aware that these networks are detrimental to privacy, as they do everything possible to identify you for the purpose of collecting your Personally Identifiable Information (PII), fingerprinting your browsers, and censoring the internet for those who refuse to be part of the walled garden.
The results from running the collection of previously connected servers to my fediverse instance are as in the file attached

Ooh, this looks interesting. My old phone (Fairphone 2) doesn't seem to be supported very well but maybe that will change in future! (even battery status isn't supported and apparently you get random reboots)

If you plug in a SIM card, can you then use it like a phone?
No doubt one can connect via WiFi and use Signal, but can one connect via 4G/5G and/or send SMSs?

@ColinTheMathmo LineageOS has broader support. I’ve installed it on an old Xiaomi phone and now it’s kicking. I use it as my secondary phone for months now and it’s great. Even bank apps are fine with it. Just google pay doesn’t work.

Far from ready too use but seems a good #philosophy for me to build on top of the normal linux kernel

@ColinTheMathmo FWIW, 4G data and SMS ‘just worked’ on my OnePlus 6T with a Smarty sim card with a fresh install of pmOS with GNOME Mobile a few weeks ago, though I had some issues with calling … need to play with it a bit more.
thanks for writing up your experience with the installer. My 6T has been sat here for ages, waiting for me to find the time to install pmOS!

I would mostly agree that the wiki doesn't feel overly cohesive, we have some ideas around this already (like some standard data format akin to the ubports install configs that would render on the website like lineageOS do) but it will take time and effort to get there (if you're reading this and find it interesting do get in touch!)
For the op6 specifically i think the long term solution will be switching to U-Boot (which you'd install via a web flasher probably?) and then flash everything else via that (with its much better usb drivers)
Thanks for sharing our focus on the philosophy, there is a (much more philosophical) movement called permacomputing, which postmarketOS evolved in parallel with but i would definitely describe it as a part of permacomputing by now

I dug out my OP6t when I saw your first post and had another go with it (first attempt I got stuck for some reason).
Up and running this time around, with disk encryption too! I find the installation and pmbootstrap wiki pages to be the most complete, supported by any errata on the device-specific pages.
@postmarketOS if the Web installer supports FDE in the future, you're on to a winner; it's great!

Definitely! For people comfortable with flashing Android ROMs from the command line with fastboot and adb, setting postmarketOS up properly is not much more complicated.
I mostly use my pmOS device as a homelab "server" with built in UPS, and it's been fantastic. 10GB RAM, 256GB storage, 8 cores, it's great.

Thanks for the writeup! I'm quite excited about postmarketos but my spare hardware (e.g. an iPhone 6) isn't well supported yet. When I replace my main phone (shift 6 mq) it will become my pmos toy.

I firmly disagree about the relative importance of things here.
In my opinion, the more important issue is reducing our dependence on Google.
The most important thing that makes postmarketOS great is that it allows people to be more independent from Google. Google's dominance in the world (in which Android plays a big part) is a bigger threat to humanity than eWaste.

it's no use having an alternative os if it doesn't provide good alternatives to google services imo, but we can't build those alternatives without having said os and devices to run it on (that people can get their hands on).

For me the best way to define postmarketOS is that it tries to be *ethic*, that includes reducing e-waste, respecting people and its privacy, reducing dependence on big corporations, etc etc

I'm not sure if you're asking about in theory or in practice, but at least in theory - yes. DivestOS supported locking the bootloader on a #Oneplus6 despite being a custom rom. I haven't heard of anyone managing to do it with pmOS, though.
@cas I tried this and got an error on my implementation of pmbootstrap. I might try a clean install via ubports and then try again
I have not tried this yet, though I plan something similar. Looks like you're having fun.
until I can really spend time on a phone, I have some stopgap measures I use, but they're like band aids, really. Like the De-Google thing on my site and "off campus"😉 apps.

Underrated little thing on the #fediverse: the edit button. You can edit your toots. I regularly see toots flying by of someone looking for something with an update added “Update: some nice person here sent me what I was looking for”, be it a PDF or an audio file etc and every single time those toots shout “people are nice and good” at me 😀
Yeah, this feature is such a relief for my inner Monk when he stumbles across an old post of mine and he can correct that damn, nerve-wracking missing comma. 🥸

Pour le Making of, ce fût en 2012 un dessin grisaille en noir-et-blanc re-colorisé. L'approche fût d'établir le portrait en utilisant des gris moyens et un pinceaux sans rebord prononcé, puis d'ébauché au dessus à faible opacité en glacis les différents animaux (ou des formes qui suivent les volumes du visages). Puis enfin de détailler, animal par animal. Enfin, coloriser en glacis.

My consideration is that their CEO's are shitty. So it carries over to their logo simply defining the overall view of the company towards the public and their users.
Somehow they all seem like the result if an AI was prompted to design a logo for them.

thankfully, since it's open source, there are alternative music-oriented front ends available. I use finamp to listen to music on my phone, and it's great.

No issue in the browser for me though with mp3 or flac
For video its flawless in my experience especially when paired with the kodi add-on because official clients can be hit and miss

As another user stated it can be cluttered and clunky but actual playback is completely fine and reliable enough that I actually built a lil mini server I take with me camping to stream my music in deadzones.

Though, the apps work better for me than the browser (the app loads subtitles straight away, but browser seems to need to cache the whole file to do it... I guess it's an mpv winning thing.)
