The image features a cartoon depiction of a Pokémon character, Riolu, standing in a kitchen setting. Riolu is a blue creature with large red eyes, long ears, and a black mask-like marking around its eyes. It has a yellow collar and is positioned on a patterned gray and white floor, with wooden cabinets in the background. The text overlay at the top reads, "My Riolu who doesn't understand he's begging for boiling water that's on the stove." On the right side, there are social media-like icons showing a profile picture, a heart with "156.1K," and a speech bubble with "8520." At the bottom, there is additional text: "[@]Nate_The_Riolukid How did he beat Brycen-Man when he's like this? 😂 #FYP #Pokémon."

Hey Friendica! I am Indica Jelly from Mastodon. I've been there for a little bit and I've been looking into all the other sites across the fediverse and heard Friendica was able to do a lot.
I will most definitely be on Mastodon as well if you wanna follow me over there but welcome to the Friendica page and I hope you enjoy whatever chaos I conjure here ❤

Unknown parent • • •several years later, Kinetoscope mutated into a Kinetophone, a kind of a device imbued within a stand that you could lean into and then see the movie for yourself. and only yourself.
many people in the field were so gassed up about this shit they asked edison to invent a projector so multiple people could watch, but edison said "nah fuck it, if i show it to multiple people it won't sell as well"
so yeah. that's what you get when americans invent things. their capitalist individualism. lol

Unknown parent • • •in 1895, auguste and louis lumière introduced the cinématographe, which could record, develop, and project film—all in one.
it was a marvel of engineering. put edison to shame, and rightfully so. that mf was probably cursing those "french commies" out. haha.
lumières developed something that quite starts to resemble modern film projectors we all have become used to.

in reply to tillian 🇰🇿🦊 ACAB • • •they called their invention "Cinématographe". this is what it looks like. idk how to describe it with alt text. someone help me, but anyway.
the reason they invented this is actually really funny because they looked at what dickson and edison had made and said "this shit is mid, we can do better". AND THEY DID.

The man, dressed in a long coat and a mustache, is standing behind a wooden stand with a large, box-like machine on top. The machine has a glass window, a crank handle, and various mechanical components, including gears and rollers. The man is turning the crank handle, which is connected to the machine, likely to advance the film. The stand has shelves with additional film reels and a door that is open, revealing the interior of the machine. The image is in black and white, and the text at the bottom reads "Le cinématographe Lumière: projection."

Cinématographe produced a sharper projected image due to its design, in which a kind of fork held frames behind the lens in place using the perforations in the sides of the film strip.

in reply to tillian 🇰🇿🦊 ACAB • • •they also added a glass vessel of water as the condenser to concentrate the light onto the film frame and to absorb heat. the flask also acted as a safety feature, as the light would no longer focus on the flammable film if it overheated or broke.
the success of Cinématographe was so huge that it completely dwarfed edison. everybody could watch films now, poor and rich, and soon Kinetophone slowly vanished from public life, forever relegated to museums and encyclopedias.

cinema history is a tangle of genius, rivalry, and stolen credit, and so many intrigues. enough for a thriller podcast

Behind the aparatus is a lightsource with some lens elements, though it is unclear whether it is electrical or fire-based there are both wire-like things and an exhaust.

in reply to tillian 🇰🇿🦊 ACAB • • •3. ooh! i just remembered! this is a thrilling one as well! buckle up! *drums his fingers*
during the filming of the wizard of oz (1939), the original tin man actor, buddy ebsen, had to be replaced because he suffered a *near-fatal allergic reaction* (!) to the aluminum powder used in his makeup. he was hospitalized because of the metal coating his lungs.
"HORRENDOUS. HOW??" you may ask.

but let's talk about the incident in depth.
tillian 🇰🇿🦊 ACAB
in reply to tillian 🇰🇿🦊 ACAB • • •so, why did those goddamn fools pick silver for tin man's makeup? good question. let's break it down.
metro goldwyn mayer tested several types of costumes and makeup to make Ebsen appear silvery. they tried covering him with tin, silvery paper, and silver cloth-covered cardboard, but none of them looked as striking, and while safe, none of the people on set seemed to know or give a single fuck about safety (see above), so they landed on paint because it looked well on technicolor.
