I am looking into selfhosted alternatives to facebook/messenger, for families. Right now the best option (for me) seems to be nextcloud + talk. Its not a great alternative to facebook. I have looked at friendica, but not that great for children. Then there is humhub and elgg, both too "nerdy" for families to really use. If you consider an alternative to facebook/messenger, for families, what options have you looked into?
