A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

Is not every true Reformer, by the nature of him, a Priest first of all? He appeals to Heaven’s invisible justice against Earth’s visible force; knows that it, the invisible, is strong and alone strong. He is a believer in the divine truth of things; a seer, seeing through the shows of things; a worshiper, in one way or the other, of the divine truth of things; a Priest, that is. If he be not first a Priest, he will never be good for much as a Reformer.

For men ought not to be so elated by the dignity of the affairs which they have undertaken to manage, as to have no regard to their ease; nor ought they to dwell with fondness on any sort of ease which is inconsistent with dignity.

A preoccupation with the so-called bottom line of profit and loss statements, coupled with a lust for expansion, is creating an environment in which fewer businessmen honor traditional values; where responsibility is increasingly disassociated from the exercise of power; where skill in financial manipulation is valued more than actual knowledge and experience in the business; where attention and effort is directed mostly to short-term considerations, regardless of longer range consequences.

Look, examine, reflect. You hold capital punishment up as an example. Why? Because of what it teaches. And just what is it that you wish to teach by means of this example? That thou shalt not kill. And how do you teach that “thou shalt not kill”? By killing.

My current server here in the broad Fediverse, friendica.world, has been having some serious problems of late. One impact was that the notification services which send out things to followers' servers once I have posted something were not running -- meaning I continued to post all sorts of quotations, but none of them were getting out there to folk.

I think I am seeing signs of that backlog beginning to break, which would be awesome news if it pans out. The server still needs the latest Friendica upgrade (which I am told is in the plans), but the fact that people are beginning to actually see the things I have been posted makes me feel much better.

(Of course, this explanatory note may not show up until all the backlog has been handled. Ah, well. Or catching up on the backlog might cause its own exciting problem before all that happens.)

At any rate, thanks for your continued support (liking, favoriting, boosting, sharing).

in reply to 💡𝚂𝗆𝖺𝗋𝗍𝗆𝖺𝗇 𝙰𝗉𝗉𝗌📱

Yeah, I've been watching likes and forwards trickle in, about a consistent 7 days behind, on a separate Masto account I have.

Which is good, and I've been getting some feedback at least. But it's still also kind of a pain in not getting timely feedback (e.g., it taking a week for someone to see the quote and then like it, or, in this case it taking a week for this message to arrive (sent Monday, 2/23) and draw a response).

But thanks for confirming it was seen. 😅
