B-side Gaming #4 Originally posted on !Bside@fedia.io in May 2025
Welcome
Hello everyone, welcome to another issue of the webzine bside Gaming. It has been a month since the last one, and I have gathered once again lots of content to read. Doing these once a month is much more work than I thought, so I think I will be switching to irregular intervals between issues. Maybe even do small ones from time to time, like only news roundups.
But for now, let us focus on this one.
Since it's a lot of stuff, I will be linking again to my write.as so I can fit everything. Posting content in the comments that I tried initially last time did not work out well because of the character limit that comments have.
Finally, I wanted to ask if there is any interest in having these in a downloadable format. At the moment, I have md files for each issue on my hard drive. There are many apps that can read md files, like the Moon Reader+ on Android. But I could also convert them into PDFs if that is preferred. I would have to check where I can host them, but I think I will find something. Maybe on Itch.io.
Enjoy reading.

Featured article: History of Adventure games
In this part we follow the rise of point and click adventure games and what came afterward.
Part 3: Point & Click and beyond
As computers gained the ability to use pointing devices (Like computer mouse) and point-and-click interfaces, graphical adventure games moved away from including the text interface and simply provided appropriate commands the player could interact with on-screen.
Enchanted Scepters
Planet Mephius, released in 1983, had a keyboard-driven point-and click interface but the first game having a true point-and-click interface using a mouse was Enchanted Scepters (1984) from Silicon Beach Software, which combined a graphics window with interactive clickable hotspots and occasional animations, drop-down menus for the player to select actions from, and a text window with a text parser and a log describing the results of the player's actions.
Déjà Vu
ICOM Simulations released Déjà Vu, the first of its MacVenture series, which utilized a more complete point-and-click interface, including the ability to drag objects around on the current scene, and was a commercial success.
Maniac Mansion
Monkey Island I
LucasArts' Maniac Mansion, released in 1987, used a novel "verb-object" interface, showing all possible commands the player could use to interact with the game along with the player's inventory, which became a staple of LucasArts' own adventure games and in the genre overall.|
It was built with scumm (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) game engine, that was also later used for many of the feature games developed by LucasArts. Like Monkey Island I, Monkey Island II, Zak McKracken and Sam and Max.
In the late 80s Sierra online developed the SCI (Sierra Creative Interpreter) game engine as a successor to the earlier AGI (Adventure Game Interpreter) engine.
SCI first appeared with King’s Quest IV in 1988 and powered many of Sierra’s adventure games through the 1990s. It introduced higher-resolution graphics, a point-and-click interface, a more sophisticated scripting language, and support for richer audio and animation.
Quest for Glory IV
Other games that used the SCI engine include Quest for Glory I (VGA Remake) Quest for Glory III, Quest for Glory IV, Gabriel Knight I-II, Space Quest III-VI, Leisure Suit Larry II-VII and Police Quest II-IV. SCI was one of the leading adventure game engines of its time, alongside LucasArts' SCUMM. It influenced modern engines like Adventure Game Studio (We saw that in the previous issue).
Graphical adventure games continued to improve with advances in graphic systems for home computers, providing more detailed and colorful scenes and characters. With the adoption of CD-ROM in the early 1990s, it became possible to include higher quality graphics, video, and audio in adventure games.
This saw the addition of voice acting to adventure games. Similar to the first sound films, games that featured such voice-overs were called "Talkies" by all the major adventure game companies, including LucasArts, and Sierra.
Gabriel Knight II (useless fun fact I have visited a few places that appear in the game)
Phatasmagoria
The 1990s also saw the rise of Interactive movies, The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery, and Phatasmagoria.
Tajemnica Statuetki
Additionally in that era we also saw the release of many adventure games from countries that had experienced dormant or fledgling video gaming industries up until that point. These games were generally inspired by their Western counterparts and a few years behind in terms of technological and graphical advancements. In particular the fall of the Soviet Union saw countries such as Poland and Czechoslovakia release a string of popular adventure games including Tajemnica Statuetki (1993) and The Secret of Monkey Island parody Tajemství Oslího ostrova (1994)(The Secret of Donkey Island), while in Russia a whole subgenre informally entitled "Russian quest" emerged following the success of Red Comrades Save the Galaxy (1998) and its sequels.
Myst
Myst released in 1993 by Cyan Worlds, is considered one of the genre's more influential titles. Myst included pre-rendered 3D graphics, video, and audio. Myst was an atypical game for the time, with no clear goals, little personal or object interaction, and a greater emphasis on exploration, and on scientific and mechanical puzzles. Myst held the record for computer game sales for seven years (and I still do not like the game).
In the late 90s and early 2000s the market share for adventure games started to drastically decline. There were many factors that led to the decline of the genre like the advent of first-person shooters, such as Doom and Half-Life. These games, taking further advantage of computer advancement, were able to offer strong, story-driven games within an action setting. Also the saturation of Myst-like games on the market led to little innovation in the field and a drop in consumer confidence in the genre. Traditional adventure games became difficult to propose as new commercial titles.
Grim Fandango
And 3d adventure games like King's Quest: Mask of Eternity, Gabriel Knight 3, and Grim Fandango were all commercial failures.
The Longest Journey
Though most commercial adventure game publication had stopped in the United States by the early 2000s, the genre was still alive in Europe.
Games such as The Longest Journey by Funcom as well as Amerzone and Syberia, both conceived by Benoît Sokal and developed by Microïds, with rich classical elements of the genre still garnered high critical acclaims.
But at the end of the 2000s and through the 2010s, adventure games began slowly to rise again thanks to new computing devices that included touchscreens like mobile phones, tablets, and the Nintendo DS and digital stores. Which helped to port older adventure games to them and the distribution of indie adventure games.
Indie adventure games have continued to be made all through to this day, with games such as Kathy Rain, Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure, Dreamfall and Dreamfall chapters, and Elroy And The Aliens.

Stats and inventory
It's a top-scroller that uses a "Your move-My move" system. This is multiplied about 30 times because every enemy on the level is allowed a move for every one of yours, but they don't all know where you are right away. It has a good and somewhat optional storyline, for the replay factor. When you create a new character you can distribute ability points between three characteristics, and select their gender and name. The levels and weapon abilities are randomly generated for an extremely high replay value.

Gamebuino Meta review
Gamebuino Meta
The Gamebuino Meta is a little 105mm x 54mm x 17mm handheld, small enough to fit in your palm and pocket but sturdy enough to withstand bumps and little hits and the casing even feels tough. It's highly reminiscent of the Game Boy Micro in form factor but with some extra features sans cartridge slot.
