Having recently been compelled to use #GoogleMaps for once, I wanted it to take me to the beach; however, it decided to lead me straight into a military checkpoint - AT GUNPOINT 🪖!
Thank you, #Google... 😅
When I pointed to Google Maps, they nodded in understanding and let me go ;)
Google just thought it would be a nice idea to take a shortcut through a completely off-limits military zone.

Altbot
in reply to Spencer • • •@spencer A map of the United States, Mexico, and Central America. The map shows the locations of major cities, including Chicago, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Mexico City, and Guatemala City. The Gulf of Mexico is also visible, as is the Tropic of Cancer. The phone's time is 7:40 AM. The bottom of the image shows a search bar that says "Search Maps".

I keep OrganicMaps and TomTom AmiGo as backup options, but I haven't needed them yet.

Osmand and organic maps are both apps that are Openstreetmap based.
Mapcarta is as well
Mapy.cz and lokjo (hadn't heard of it till now) are also osm based.
And so are Komoot (best for cycling/walking) and magic earth (best for car) are also OSM based.
Mapquest is Here based

Even simple things — put a point where you favourite cafe or nice neighbour's shop is, save a path you went on a walk and upload it… Sure, it would not help you directly, you already know the places — but more details make map more useful, more useful map gathers more users, more users mean more contributors… soon you'll notice that someone added more data to what you marked, that someone else mapped the town down the road you happen to visit…
I started with adding basic emergency facilities to my grandparent's town. Doctor, pharmacy, fire department, police, library… and fountain, just for fun. Then I left. When I checked back, there were even individual trees and benches mapped. Somebody stepped in; but the map had to have some basic useful info first.

You don't know how to map? Try StreetComplete on your phone during next walk. It'll ask you questions about places that are already on the map, but lack some details. It will let you add points, like cafe, shop or garage. It will also let you just pin notes about something that should be mapped, there's a possibility someone more experienced will come and help. But you — you already have the most precious things needed: you are there and you know the place. Share them. If you ever come to my neigbourhood, you'll benefit from my contributions 😀

I use #OrganicMaps (💕 !) and love it. Sometimes I need Google's surveillance machine for current traffic info, though. Do any of these options have traffic data?
Side note: I wonder how a FOSS style traffic service could exist financially. Streaming sats podcasting 2.0 style, or a monthly subscription? I love the idea of free, but doubt server costs could be covered by donations, given the need for frequent updates. 🤔

in reply to Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️ • • •Magic Earth has traffic data.
I don't think they say where they get it.
@madeindex
Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️
in reply to InsertUser • • •Well, I'm sure however they're getting their data, and their behavior can't really be worse than Google, so I dare say it's an improvement... assuming they haven't renamed the Gulf of Mexico or similar.
Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️
in reply to InsertUser • • •Do they have traffic speed or just traffic incidents?
InsertUser
in reply to Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️ • • •@Blort
They have some sort of indication of congestion and will sometimes update expected arrival time based on that, or suggest rerouting IIRC.
They also have road closures and you can report hazards.
I don't know how any of that is stored internally.

It may not be an insurmountable issue though. Could there be companies with privacy requirements willing to fund the server costs (for everyone?) Or charge for using but not sharing data? Or charge only for commercial use? Or..?
