I think the author is deliberately missing the point, or passing it tangentially. We have discovered here the very crux, or balance-point of the culture wars: Selfishness. The various aspects of MAGA can easily be traced to one resonating theme: Selfishness. Selfishness as a Virtue, no less.
Now of course, deep down, most of these folks proclaiming selfishness as a virtue know they are wrong - if they absorbed anything from the New Testament. But being in the wrong has made them all the more strident, delusional, and in denial - sometimes aggressively so.

Understanding where the inflection point lies, we need to focus upon this point - without rousing reactions of aggressive denial. Compassion is the answer and winning strategy to the Culture War. There is every reason to be confident that cultural movement towards compassion will win, as it is the right way to live; and I believe that deep-down, virtually every MAGA person knows this too.
