My husband constantly refers to aluminum foil as tin foil and it's one of the elements of our relationship that periodically makes me want to divorce him.

@Freshwuzhere @intothewestaway America has done a LOT of things wrong, but just because the rest of the world has decided to mispronounce/misspell the name given by the discoverer of aluminum doesn't mean we need to follow suit.

That being said, I don’t give AF about what the inventor of the gif says, I am NOT saying it like jif.

@SimonCHulse The metal foil in question hasn't been made from tin since the early 20th century. It's made from aluminum/aluminium.

I guess unless NZ is still trying to use up some VERY old stock. Or maybe NZ is flush with tin reserves and it's actually cheaper to make the foil out of tin over there. But ours is definitely made from aluminum.
