Friendica New User Tutorial Recommendations

!New To Friendica

Hello, I'm writing a #friendica tutorial for folks who want an alternative to Facebook. Nearly all of the target audience have never even heard of friendica. Since this is a group of individuals who are also new to friendica but have at least found your way here - I would like your input.

What is something that you have learned about friendica that you wish someone had told you at the very beginning?

To not import mastodon contacts if you are keeping a separate account. I see the same posts when I log into both platforms because I inadvertently did that. If I would’ve known when I set up my profile, I would have kept them completely separate.

Creating channels: the video etc checkboxs mean video is Required in a post to be shown in the channel, not permitted.

Adding people, adjusting which circles they are in, and muting/blocking people are all things that took me some time to figure out.

Adjusting the items shown on the lefthand menu.

Exactly. I still haven't understood what a circle is and what a channel is.

I'm confused, too. I think circles are for people and channels are for subjects (hashtags about subjects?)

That groups can be addressed with an exclamation point or an at-sign. But I don't understand the difference!

How to adjust notifications to see replies and mentions. I believe all I see now are follow requests.

Privacy of posts -- is there a way to restrict who sees one's posts? Can I restrict viewing to those in one circle or another?

With regard to replies, the answer is yes, but the web interface isn't configured for it (as far as I can tell). On Raccoon (Android Friendica App) you can change the visibility of a post/reply.

With original posts, the permissions tab (when posting) will give you some control over who sees the post.

How to choose a node/server and a list of suggestions with short description (how stable, hosted where and by whom). The directory on friendi.ca is crazy slow and complicated, luckily i found one that seemed ok ln the first page… Most nodes list very few info and also for .world I needed to go check the profile of the admin to get pertinent info. With disclaimers of course that you’re not responsible… but otherwise it gives a huge headache if you don’t have a friend who tells you ”take this one i have it too”.

Olá, estou precisando muito de ajuda. Na descrição daqui existe uma lista de servidores para interagir: Diaspora, Mastodon, Pixelfed, Pielfed, Pleroma, Tumblr... Gostaria muitíssimo de fazer estas conexões para ter aqui como um lugares robusto para o fediverse.
