Each time Orion twists the monkey wrench
to tighten screws of arrogant dismay,
he tests the rumbling engine of his heart
to see how fast bold pistons of regret
can spin firm axle of psychic intent
when racing car of talent down the road.
Leaning close to hear each unspoken word,
Othreis writes dishes on the order pad
with plastic pen now running dry of ink,
then glides quick as the sly desert gazelle,
bearing trays heaped with soul-comforting meals
for patrons in Temple of Artemis.
Driving past diner where Othreis waits tables,
Orion consults map of fairy tales
to find secret cavern of the God Toad
who guards with care the scroll that Sibyl wrote
while aging in the golden cage of time
that outlines social rules for power games.
Sensing something terrible in the air,
Othreis stares at old man in the black coat,
but backs away when grim-eyed Orcus stands,
then runs through bell-tinkling glass door of fear
onto the highway of electric turtles
where Orion slams on car brakes of faith.
Helping Othreis stand, and cleaning skinned arm,
Orion asks what frightened her to death,
so she points at dark shadow of despair
that haunts quaint diner on the desert road,
eyes frantic with hysterical regard,
till his gentle voice soothes her beating heart.
Notching arrow in bow of burning gold,
Orion enters diner of frail glass,
where thousands of faceless people eat pies,
to confront demonic Orcus with red eyes,
surrounded by swirl of red butterflies,
who sucks souls of humans with holy lies.
Firing arrow of desire in his heart,
Orion asserts law of equal rights
that every person in the world retains
as brave gift from the Countenance Divine
with force of justice that scatters in dust
hate that writhes from nationalist pride.
Though ironic prophets design grand goals
as ideals for great empires to attain,
state leaders stumble blindly through each crisis
as Jesus and Satan take turns to rule,
while Orion hunts exploiters of men
to free our minds from slavery of greed.
