And also, most people either *don't* know what Meta is doing, or they know but don't understand for far the implications reach. (Thinking of my octogenarian mom who never even learned to program our VCR back in the '80s.)
Facebook users deserve privacy, but not on Facebook.
Facebook is a tool for sharing your life publicly. Why should you expect privacy from a tool whose entire purpose is public exposure? And how would that even work?
You really shouldn't try to mix private and public communications on the same platform. It will never work.
if you willfully choose to go into a public space in plain view of cameras and do things you do not want recorded, you're not a victim. Your privacy was not invaded.
edit: what happened to our critical thinking skills? do they stop once you sit at a computer chair?
"willfully" somebody needs to buy the milk, pal. That's why in civilized countries you can't just film everyone everywhere.
I'll never trust meta. Still, using facebook is a slightly less dystopian experience when privacy laws exist. And they exist because People. Deserve. Privacy.
You should have the expectation that you may be observed or noticed while in public. That does not translate to an expectation that you may be tracked, followed, and recorded every instant you are visible from some public place somewhere. Public and private is not a binary system, but a gradient between invisibility and panopticon. We are now in a state of overreach toward the latter. Few people desire a surveillance snitch society, and that is being forced on us.
Not only do they deserve it, so many of them want it!
You can tell by how they all post the spammy chain letter posts about how tomorrow Facebookโs rules will change and if they post today that they donโt allow Facebook to steal their data they will be protected from it.
I have a lot of family that use facebook. Our family is scatter all over the US and sometimes all over the world. Facebook offers them a stay in touch in a very rich way. It also funnels them garbage, and puts them at risk. These people may or may not know this and just yelling at them that they deserve what they get for being able to enjoy pictures that their grand children send them is wrong.
tl;dr - you are absolutely right. They deserve privacy. Facebook (windows, etc)
I haven't kept up on this but i know years ago many Latin American countries let Facebook give their users zero rate data meaning Facebook is free Internet, and the only Internet many people can afford.
If anything it's especially important for nontechnical users. Some of us can defend ourselves more, but my mother for instance is deeply vulnerable and needing of protection.
"the Dirty Windows/Facebook Peasants don't deserve privacy" is a take that could only come out of circles where men who believe their STEM degrees make them superior to others spend all their time huffing each other's farts
own volution. Being here. Offers easy transition opportunities to other services. Linux days/install parties. Unfortunately a lot of families are still on whatsapp and linux and say that no other solutions are working for them. Same with iphone vs graphene OS.
Of course, these platforms are mendacious assholes as well. People want to leave, but all their friends are there and itโs a collective action problem they will never lift a finger to make possible.
Iโm big on the idea of presenting people in general who want to escape these platforms. Can we build a project where people join in order to build the world they want? The intentional hurdle is the collective action problem of bringing along enough of your friends.
We use it at work, which is a library and run by our local council. I have to use it to stay in contact with relatives who live all over the world. Chatting via messenger is a pretty easy set up for my less tech inclined family. Why do they deserve less privacy for needing to use Facebook?
Yes, everyone deserves privacy. Privacy is one of those things that is sort of all or nothing: them not having privacy is actually hurting my privacy, just by making me (with more privacy) stand out.
I'm not arguing that.
But I'm not gonna bend backwards for people who'll troll you the first chance they get. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot, I won't waste my time and energy trying to stop them. Especially given that they will retry as soon as they can (read: as soon as I have left) anyway.
I would love to say that privacy isn't a lost cause, but we aren't nearly intelligent enough as a society to salvage what's left and fight back...
Meta and MS make it very clear how they feel about their users, regardless of how their users really feel.
Like, when techbros say that Windows and FB/IG users don't deserve privacy, MS and Meta themselves are saying that very loud and clear by their actions as of late.
Hell, Meta is the one doing the bulk of the lobbying for all the recent KYC laws.
Privacy is like healthcare. Everyone, without exception, is entitled to it as a basic human right. If you think otherwise you are probably making a fortune by restricting it or have been convinced by those people it's good to restrict it.
Yes! Especially because #Windows & #Facebook are ubiquitous & are used by many users who are ignorant of the reasons why they shouldn't use those products. Have pity on those users & grant them privacy.
I'm speaking from the perspective of one who had to support family members using those products because they wouldn't take my advice to not use them. ๐๐คฆ

If one opposes to someone's rights, one should loose those rights, as per their own wish.
