My heart swells with stark sensation of respect
when Earth spirals through bright cloud of stardust
beneath constellation of the Brave Boy
who rescues from Cruel Serpent of the sea
Graceful Girl sacrificed by Greedy King,
and crowns womankind queen of her own life.
When fierce winds lash waves against rocky coast,
Perseus steers motor lifeboat with calm skill
through swells of tempestuous anxiety
to find sailboat capsized in churning fear,
and rescues seven people from abyss
who huddle for warmth as he turns toward land.
Wrapped in warm towel and clean cotton robe,
Andrea sips hot tea by glowing hearth
in sturdy stone cottage by roaring sea,
safe from time-wracking gale that pummels hard
her vulnerable sense of security
as she breathes deep to calm her frantic heart.
Sitting with guitar in the leather armchair,
Perseus plays heart-enchanting melody
Asturias, composed by Isaac Albeniz,
that transports spirits of the rescued crew
to sun-enraptured hills of sweet duende
where children play games in groves of orange trees.
At dawn when gold sun gleams through placid waves,
Perseus and Andrea together stroll
broad shore of gleaming sand between high cliffs
of jagged rocks and boundless sea of light,
smiling shyly as they share childhood tales
and laugh with delight at clever insights.
Approaching them with angry stride of hope,
Daniel, the banker who would marry her
with encouragement from her father, shouts
for her to show some common decency,
then grabs her arm with possessive disgust,
so Perseus pushes attacker away.
Declaring she will never marry him
because he attempts to control her life,
Andrea takes hand of Perseus in her hand,
and strides back to stone cottage on the hill
where they eat breakfast with her family,
then exchange phone numbers inside the door.
Meeting for their first date at the bookstore,
Andrea and Perseus discuss history
of architecture, weapons, clothes, and food
to compare the bronze age culture of Greece
with features of the Viking age in Norway,
and hold hands as they stroll by wine-dark sea.
