"MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. – A 12-year-old visitor was injured by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on June 26 at approximately 9:15 a.m.

The incident occurred near Mud Volcano, just north of Fishing Bridge. The visitor sustained injuries, and emergency medical personnel transported them to a nearby hospital. The incident remains under investigation."

Every couple of months it's someone gored by a bison at yellowstone, someone going over the falls at yosemite, and someone dying of thirst/ falling to their death at grand canyon

am i missing any "perennial deaths at us national parks" categories?

Why can't little Timmy just photograph the bison himself from a safe distance? I mean, this is what I do with bunnies in the back yard, in this case from my window, which bunnies will of course just run away if scared and that's that, where bison will try to gore you or worse, but still.

And even with bugs, warning colors should be heeded and things like tarantula hawks didn't get their reputation for having one of the most painful stings in the bug kingdom out of nowhere.

Leave people out of this unless they're accompanied by a licensed wildlife handler, eg. if playing with a Fennec fox with said handler calling the shots.

i was at the grand canyon and there's a portion of the cliff where there's an isolated pillar a few feet from the cliff and an insane fall all around both the cliff and the pillar

and i watch this dude run and jump onto the pillar so his friends can take a picture of him there. then he jumps back

People do idiotic things all over the place. We were in Arizona in 2022 and hiked up a popular Red Rock formation near Sedona. At the top, people waited their turn to get selfies on a picturesque outcropping (not me -- getting to the top was enough). Some morons HUNG OFF the edge for the best extreme shots.

@Pineywoozle @PamelaBarroway @benroyce @CStamp There's a rappel in Joshua Tree I have done many, many, many times which is off the end of a cliff and about 50 or 60 feet down. I'm happy to do it as long as there are three anchors up top I have personally inspected and a good rope! (plus all the safety gear!). The big issue (I was doing this as a climbing instructor with a youth group) is that you've GOT to have a well fitting harness. Skinny people and young kids need a very adjustable harness or you have a real risk of falling out the top (no hips!!)

@PamelaBarroway @benroyce @CStamp My favorite climb at Vedauwoo was called Holy Saturday and you walked backwards off the rock face for 5 feet hopped off the slight overhang and then it was just you and the rope and the Wyoming wind for 60 ft bounding down the face. LoL That said only a fucking idiot hangs off a cliff without a rope. “People” indeed.
