Meta AI is a new feature recently added to Instagram. Your profile photo and other photos are used by Meta to train their AI, but can also be fed to any AI by visitors.

Whatever your intentions were when you started on social media, this isn't the relationship you chose then: giving away your personal or business and often confidential images and information to the owners of these giga websites, with the risk of changing and selling those images and information to unknown others. The intention has always been that only you manipulate that and the tech company is exclusively serviceable to you.

Big Tech's gotten away from that part a long time ago. With the AI addition, these companies indicate that they consider the images and information you post as their property, with which they can do whatever they want.

The opportunity made the thief, because we placed all our material on servers owned by others. So it was in storage, without guarding the guard, who manages the back door.

For us, naive users, there are three options:
1 - Remove your profile photo, personal photos and information (also from others) from your accounts.
2 - Put your accounts to private: only your own connections can then see your photos and information.
3 - Close your accounts so you don't post there anymore (try to clear it first).
None of the options are foolproof, but maybe it helps.

Meta AI has been linked to Whatsapp and Facebook for some time. Last year, we could object to Meta's misuse of our personal data. But most people had something else on their mind.

If you want to prevent identity fraud on social media, you could maintain a very basic account without personal photos and information.

If you depend on social media for your work or business, you may consider using more and more new media that Big Tech has no influence on, such as Signal, Nextcloud, Quodari, Threema, Wire, ProtonMail, Tuta Mail and in the Fediverse (server itself set up or join others): Mastodon (likes X), PixelFed (has something like Instagram), PeerTube (like YouTube), Jitsi (free video conferencing), Castopod (podcasting), Owncast (video live streaming, resembling Twitch), Lemmy (link aggregation: has something like Reddit) and others. The dynamics will be with you or your company again.

Meta AI is een nieuwe functie die onlangs is toegevoegd aan Instagram. Jouw profielfoto en andere foto's worden door Meta gebruikt om hun AI mee te trainen, maar kunnen ook door bezoekers gevoerd worden aan elke AI.

Wat jouw intenties ook waren toen je op sociale media begon, dit is niet de relatie waar je toen voor koos: het weggeven van jouw persoonlijke of zakelijke en vaak vertrouwelijke beelden en informatie aan de eigenaren van deze gigawebsites, met bovendien het risico van verandering en prijsgeving van die afbeeldingen en informatie aan onbekende anderen. De bedoeling is altijd geweest dat alleen jij dat manipuleert en het techbedrijf uitsluitend dienstbaar is aan jou.

Aan die rol had Big Tech zich allang ontworsteld. Met de AI-toevoeging geven deze bedrijven aan dat zij de beelden en informatie die jij post als hun eigendom beschouwen, waarmee zij kunnen doen wat ze willen. Onrechtmatige toeëigening dus.

De gelegenheid maakte de dief, want wij plaatsten al ons materiaal op servers die in eigendom zijn van anderen. Het was dus in bewaargeving, zonder bewaking van de bewaarnemer, die de achterdeur beheert.

Voor ons, bewaargevers, zijn er drie opties:
1 - Haal je profielfoto, persoonlijke foto's en informatie (ook van anderen) weg van je accounts.
2 - Zet je accounts op privé: alleen je eigen connecties kunnen dan je foto's en informatie zien.
3 - Sluit je accounts, zodat je er sowieso niet meer post (probeer het eerst leeg te maken).
Geen van de opties is waterdicht, maar wie weet helpt het iets.

Meta AI is al langer gekoppeld aan Whatsapp en Facebook. Vorig jaar kon je bezwaar maken tegen misbruik van jouw persoonlijke gegevens door Meta. Maar de meeste mensen hadden wel wat anders aan hun hoofd.

Wil je persoonsfraude op sociale media voorkomen, dan kun je een heel basaal account zonder persoonlijke foto's en informatie aanhouden.

Ben je afhankelijk van sociale media voor je werk of bedrijf, dan kun je overwegen steeds meer de nieuwe media in te schakelen waar Big Tech geen invloed op heeft, zoals Signal, Nextcloud, Quodari, Threema, Wire, ProtonMail, Tuta Mail en in de Fediverse (server zelf inrichten of aansluiten bij anderen): Mastodon (lijkt op X), PixelFed (heeft iets van Instagram), PeerTube (lijkt op YouTube), Jitsi (gratis video conferencing), Castopod (podcasting), Owncast (video live streaming, lijkt op Twitch), Lemmy (linkaggregatie: heeft iets van Reddit) en andere. De dynamiek ligt dan weer bij jou of jouw bedrijf.
