Fun fact: The Fediverse's roots trace back to Canada in 2008 with Laconica (created by @evan) which later became GNU/Social.
Fast forward 17 years, and history repeats itself - Pixelfed.social, now the most active Fediverse server, is proudly Canadian-made. 🇨🇦

Granted, it was "distributed" and not "Federated", but if you compare technologies available at the time, I think you'll find similarities there too.
