Fun fact: The Fediverse's roots trace back to Canada in 2008 with Laconica (created by @evan) which later became GNU/Social.

Fast forward 17 years, and history repeats itself - Pixelfed.social, now the most active Fediverse server, is proudly Canadian-made. 🇨🇦

At first, I was really scared by Trump's threat of invading Canada. The United States has quite a big army and many dangerous weapons after all.

But then, I realized I was being silly.

We in Canada have Canadian geese!
Nobody can beat that.
We're safe.
Honk!

A lot of us aren't on board with this kind of craziness towards our neighbors to the North.

I'm not sure yet what I'd do if I ended up on the wrong side of this as an American, but I'd do what I could.

As someone from a mixed family, this pisses me off so much.

I run into white guys like this more and more often these days. I will bet you dollars to donuts that this man uses his wife as a human shield against accusations of racism.

If you are white and you have a friend or family member who is not, then don't you dare use them as human shields against accusations of racism. That shows you don't actually respect them.

Instead of saying "I can't be racist against X, I have a friend who is X," what you should be doing is conducting your life in such a way that no one thinks to accuse you of being bigoted against your friend's or family member's demographic.

Because THAT is what a friend would do.

And yes, you will occasionally be accused of that no matter what because we are all participating in a racist society and pick up more of it than we want to admit.

African-American jurors are more likely to…

…vote to convict if the defendant is African-American. If African-Americans have internalized racist assumptions to that degree, then you are in no position to assume you are immune from the influence of society. It affects all of us to some degree or another, and a lot of these racist premises are incredibly insidious.

No matter what, if you are the white person in a mixed relationship, you're going to accept being occasionally corrected, and make an effort to improve yourself.

If you do not do this, you will compound the harm society inflicts on your spouse and children.

Further, you need to be aware that your family are the ones least likely to correct you on such matters, so you need to have non-familiy members in your orbit who are willing to criticize you about this, because your family might remain silent in the name of “keeping the peace.”

But if you are using your family or friends as human shields against accusations of racism, you are definitely not…

…doing ANY of that.

You are instead taking whatever harm our racist society is inflicting on your loved ones and either allowing the harm to fester, or making it worse.

Whether we are talking about friends or family, YOU should not be the one making that bullshit worse.

And if you see an entire political party hurling racist dog whistles at your friends or loved ones, and you decide to vote for that party, you are pure scum. You are not a friend…

…and you are definitely not a loved one.

That's not what friends are. That is not what friends do, and it absolutely is not appropriate behavior towards someone you ostensibly love.

Thank you.

It used to be that if you were the white person in a mixed relationship, at some point, someone from the same race from outside your family would sit you down and have a talk like the above.

But somewhere along the way, the Republicans pushed so much defensive white fragility bullshit into the national discourse that when I try to play that role for someone else, they just resist and get defensive instead of listening.

Perhaps some day I should tell the story of how that “little talk” went for my father. It involved a race riot near the DMZ in Korea

Yeah, and that right there implies a fundamental disregard for his own family that I find unconscionable.
