Digitale Souveränität: Zwischen Trump, Cloud Act und OpenDesk – ZenDiS bei #9vor9
Es ist heiß – nicht nur draußen, sondern auch in der Debatte um digitale Souveränität. Plötzlich ist das Thema in aller Munde, dabei wird die Abhängigkeit von US-Konzernen schon seit Jahren kritisiert. Doch jetzt, nach dem erneuten Erfolg von Trump bei den US-Wahlen und einigen spektakulären Vorfällen, fragt sich plötzlich auch der Mainstream: Werden wir im Ernstfall überhaupt souverän handeln können? Die Antwort ist: Nur, wenn wir uns trauen, echte Alternativen zu nutzen.
Alexander Smolianitski, Leiter Open-Source-Produkte beim ZenDiS, dem Ende 2022 gegründeten Zentrum für digitale Souveränität, bringt es bei uns im Podcast #9vor9 auf den Punkt: Souveränität bedeutet, jederzeit die Möglichkeit zu haben, zu wechseln. Das klingt simpel, ist aber in der Praxis ein revolutionärer Gedanke – gerade für die Verwaltung, die seit Jahrzehnten in den Fängen von Microsoft und Co. steckt.
„Wir sind so ein kleiner Rebell innerhalb der Verwaltungsfamilie“, sagt Alex – und das ist nötig, denn die öffentliche Hand ist auf dem globalen Markt oft nur ein kleiner Fisch, dessen Gelder gerne genommen werden, aber dessen spezielle Wünsche von Big Tech oft ignoriert werden. Doch der „kleine Fisch“ deutsche Öffentliche Hand überweist immerhin Millionen von Euro, nach einigen Berechnungen summiert sich das auf mehr als eine Milliarde Euro für Produkte und Dienstleistungen nach Redmond, Gelder, die man gut auch in die europäische IT-Industrie investieren könnte.
Open Source: Plötzlich Applaus statt Augenrollen
Noch vor wenigen Jahren war Open Source für viele ein Nerd-Thema. Gescheiterte Projekte wie Limux in München wurden immer wieder als „Beweis“ dafür herangezogen, dass es nicht funktioniert. Heute bekommt Open Source Applaus – weil Transparenz, Teilhabe und digitale Souveränität eben mehr sind als ein Spielzeug für IT-Enthusiasten. Wer digitale Kontrolle wirklich will, kommt an offenen Quellen nicht vorbei. Und man sieht in Europa und gerade auch in Deutschland viel neue Bewegung, gerade auch um ein Gegengewicht zur Microsoft-Dominanz im Office-Umfeld zu schaffen. Das ZenDiS mit Open Desk ist die wahrscheinlich wichtigste Initiative, aber auch Ionos und Nextcloud wollen mit „Nextcloud Workspace“ eine weitere souveräne, DSGVO-konforme Office-Suite aus Deutschland anbieten.
Das Problem: Ohne politischen Willen bleibt es beim frommen Wunsch. Und der politische Wille ist oft schwankend – wie die Beispiele des Landes Niedersachsen, das Microsoft Teams einführt, oder der Bundeswehr zeigen. So setzt die Bundeswehr setzt auf die Google Cloud. Kritiker warnen vor Datenzugriff durch US-Behörden, doch das BWI, IT-Systemhauses der Bundeswehr, argumentiert: SAP-Anwendungen laufen nur mit Hyperscalern wie Google.
Das Dilemma der digitalen Souveränität
Ähnlich wird auch von vielen Seiten bezüglich des Einsatzes von Microsoft365 beziehungsweise Microsoft Office argumentiert. Die Verwaltung in Deutschland ist geprägt von sogenannten Fachverfahren – Software, die oft schon seit der Dotcom-Blase existiert und sich seither kaum verändert hat. Viele dieser Anwendungen funktionieren bisher nur in der Microsoft-Welt, weil sie auf Word oder Excel setzen. Open Source? „Geht nicht, weil meine Excel-Makros dann nicht mehr funktionieren“, ist die Aussage, die man oft hört.
Die Abhängigkeit bleibt – das Dilemma europäischer Digitalpolitik. So wird aus dem Wunsch nach Souveränität schnell ein Teufelskreis: Man möchte unabhängig sein, doch die eigenen Fachverfahren und Prozesse sind oft tief mit proprietären Lösungen verwoben, dass ein Ausstieg unmöglich scheint.
Microsoft, der „Hilfssheriff“ – und warum wir Alternativen brauchen
Dabei hat Microsoft in der Vergangenheit gezeigt, wie schnell politische Entscheidungen die Arbeit von Behörden, Gerichten oder Unternehmen beeinflussen können. Die umstrittene Sperre des E-Mail-Kontos des Chefanklägers des Internationalen Strafgerichtshofs auf Anweisung von US-Präsident Trump war ein neuerlicher Weckruf. Zwar rudert Microsoft zurück: Künftig sollen Sperrentscheidungen bei US-Sanktionen den Kunden überlassen werden. Doch das ändert nichts an der grundsätzlichen Abhängigkeit. Wer wirklich souverän sein will, muss Alternativen aufbauen – und nutzen.
OpenDesk & Co.: Endlich echte Wahlfreiheit jenseits der Microsoft Cloud?
ZenDiS hat in den vergangenen Monaten mit OpenDesk eine Alternative zu Microsoft 365 geschaffen. Ein kompletter digitaler Arbeitsplatz, bestehend aus E-Mail, Kalender, Dateiablage, Dokumentenbearbeitung, Projektmanagement, Chat und Videokonferenz – alles auf Open-Source-Basis. Dahinter stehen Partner wie Univention, Nextcloud, Open-Xchange, Collabora und viele mehr. Das Besondere: OpenDesk ist nicht nur eine Sammlung von Tools, sondern ein integriertes Ökosystem, das über einen Single Sign-On erreichbar ist. Die Komplexität wird für die Nutzer:innen unsichtbar gemacht – es gibt einen Support-Kanal und ein einheitliches Lizenzmodell.
Open Source, komplett in deutschen Rechenzentren, für Unternehmen und Behörden. Endlich echte Wahlfreiheit? Die Herausforderung bleibt, die verschiedenen Open-Source-Tools logisch zu verknüpfen und Managed Services sowie Supportmodelle anzubieten. Doch die Chancen stehen gut, denn die beteiligten Unternehmen haben durchaus viel Erfahrung.
Betriebsmodelle: Flexibilität als Trumpf
Während Microsoft seine Werkzeuge immer mehr in die Microsoft Azure-Cloud verlagert, bietet OpenDesk Alternativen. Wer bei Microsoft alle neuen Funktionen und die volle Integration mit Künstlicher Intelligenz und Collaboration will, muss zwangsweise in die Microsoft-Cloud – und wer On-Premise bleiben will, wird technisch und funktional zurück gelassen. Kritiker sprechen von Alarmzeichen und einem goldenen Microsoft-Käfig, in dem Deutschland bald sitze.
OpenDesk kann demgegenüber auf verschiedene Arten betrieben werden: als Community-Version, als Software-as-a-Service bei einem nationalen Hyperscaler, on-premise im eigenen Rechenzentrum oder sogar in einer Confidential Cloud für besonders sensible Daten. Das ist ein echter Vorteil gegenüber den großen Anbietern, bei denen immer das Misstrauen bleibt, dass die US-Administration auf Basis des Cloud Acts oder der Executive Order 12333 Dateneinsicht verlangen und bekommen könnte.
KI, Lobbyismus und der heiße Scheiß
Doch kann ZenDiS mit OpenDesk angesichts des Hypes rund um Künstliche Intelligenz und Large Language Models (LLMs) mithalten? Die großen Anbieter werben mit ihren KI’s und automatisierten Prozessen. Microsofts Copilot werde endlich gut, berichtet beispielsweise die FAZ: Die zweite Copilot-Welle verschmelze Word, Excel und Teams mit einem KI-Layer. Unternehmen, die Copilot abonnieren, könnten ihre Workflows direkt mit Microsofts Cloud verknüpfen – und könnten dadurch an Produktivität gewinnen.
Mit solchen Aussagen sieht sich natürlich auch ZenDiS konfrontiert. Kann ein OpenDesk mit der KI-Power der Großen mithalten? Man hat reagiert: OpenDesk setzt auf standardisierte Schnittstellen, so dass verschiedene KI-Engines angeschlossen werden können – solange sie datenschutzkonform sind. Die ersten KI-Integrationen sollen noch dieses Jahr kommen. Das wäre ein wichtiges Signal, denn viele Verwaltungen wollen nicht auf Large Language Models setzen, die nicht in Europa gehostet und nach europäischen Gesetzen betrieben werden. Pläne von Präsident Trump, KI zehn Jahre lange nicht zu regulieren, tragen dabei bestimmt nicht zum Vertrauen bei den Europäern bei. Und mit Mistrals Le Chat gibt es ja durchaus europäische Alternativen.
Sichere Lieferketten und der Weg der Entwicklung
Ein weiterer Punkt, der oft unter den Tisch fällt: Wie kommt Software eigentlich in die Behörden? Alex weist auf die Bedeutung sicherer Lieferketten hin. Es reicht nicht, nur Open Source zu nutzen – auch der Weg, wie der Code entwickelt, gespeichert und ausgeliefert wird, muss transparent und nachvollziehbar sein. Ein Thema, das in Zukunft noch wichtiger werden wird.
Alex betont im Podcast, dass europäische Zusammenarbeit für ZenDiS entscheidend ist: Deutschland, Frankreich und die Niederlande arbeiten gemeinsam an vergleichbaren Office- und Kollaborationssuites auf Open-Source-Basis, etwa „La Suite“ in Frankreich. Ziel ist, durch länderübergreifende Projekte und Interessensgemeinschaften nachhaltige, unabhängige Lösungen zu schaffen, die nicht von einzelnen Akteuren abhängen, sondern von einer breiten Community getragen werden.
Geht es denn ohne MS?
Viele sagen: „Man kann ja eh nichts machen, alle nutzen Microsoft & Co.“ Falsch, eine selbst erfüllenden Prophezeiung! Open Source bietet durchaus unterdessen echte Alternativen, fördert Innovation und schützt vor digitaler Fremdbestimmung. Es ist Zeit, umzudenken, meint nicht nur ein Harald Schirmer. Sogar im FAZ Digitalwirtschaft-Podcast wird Open Source aktiv als valide Alternative für Europa empfohlen. Unabhängigkeit, Transparenz und digitale Souveränität sind das, was Europa genau jetzt braucht.
Und das muss keine Utopie bleiben: ZenDiS berät Bund, Länder und Kommunen, bietet ein „Souveränitätspaket“ aus Open-Source-Produkten, strategischer Beratung und Plattformen. Ziel: die digitale Unabhängigkeit der Verwaltung von US-Konzernen und proprietärer Software.
Alex lädt Verwaltungen ein: „Wir können helfen, den richtigen Weg zu finden.“ Es ist eine Einladung, sich von alten Abhängigkeiten zu lösen und digitale Souveränität wirklich zu leben. Ob das gelingt? Die Chance war wohl noch nie so gut – wenn die Verwaltungen den Mut zur Veränderung aufbringen. Und vielleicht ist das der größte Fortschritt: Dass die Diskussion überhaupt geführt wird. Denn wer weiß schon genau, wie viele Millionen US-Dollar jedes Jahr nach Redmond fließen – und wie viel davon eigentlich in Bochum, Bremen oder Berlin bleiben könnte? In Bochum, dem Sitz von ZenDiS, quasi dem Sherwood Forest der digitalen Souveränität, wird gerade Geschichte geschrieben. Und wer weiß: Vielleicht ist Microsoft ja bald nur noch eine Option unter vielen.
A recent toot around here made me think about #giftedness and #autism. There's a lot of overlap. As there is between autism and #cPTSD.
So it got me wondering how you know that you're autistic and not, say, gifted and traumatized. Or autistic and traumatized, rather than gifted. Or if it matters at all (we're struggling anyways, aren't we?). Could accomodations and support even be that specific?
When we discover that we have so many autistic traits, we must be autistic...then realise our giftedness, and/or our cPTSD afterwards. @actuallyautistic
@Tooden I think it may help to distinguish between clinical terms and terms that are used more broadly in every day language. Autism can be used both ways, but a lot of the time it's used in relation to the traits defined in the DSM5 - you can be officially diagnosed as autistic by a qualified psychiatrist.
You can also use "autistic" to mean whatever you mean when you self realise as autistic, or to be an insult, etc. So autistic has both a formal, clinical meaning, and a more general meaning.
Gifted, on the other hand, is not a clinical term. You can't be diagnosed as gifted as there is no generally accepted official definition or official list of traits. It's like "neurodivergent" - we all use it to mean different things.
The interesting question for me (as a gifted, traumatized, autistic person - also probably in the savant part of the spectrum) is "why?"
Why do we need these distinctions and why do some of us cling to them?
Imo, we use them to shield ourselves from harm (i.e. Ableism). It is the primary function in capitalism to optimize the workforce. "Disable" those who are different. Make them less likely to reproduce.
If you might feel "fascism" looming in that sentence. That is intended.
to expand on this a bit: it has also been written over 100 years ago that fascism is just the "emergency" button of capitalism. Fascism is rooted in capitalism and capitalism normalizes fascism through social darwinism.
@haui All I know is that if I hadn't been put in "gifted" classes I probably wouldn't be alive today, because I was not doing well psychologically in the one-size-fits-all classes. So it's a distinction that means something for me.
Which is completely understandable. I would have done a lot better in those classes too, but alas.
Gifted classes are obvious, from my perspective. Of course the smart people need to be especially supported. They will advance the workforce, yada yada.
In an equal society, you dont need different classes. You dont even have different schools. Kids just chose what they are interested in. No need for equal education between all. We have books for this, yet.
@haui @BernieDoesIt Sometimes a child (adults too) will become interested in something because of a teacher. (I majored in history because of my first year history lecturer.) Conversely, a poor teacher (or one having to teach outside of their area of expertise) might fail to engage students.
And a lot of students won’t know if they’re interested in something if they’ve never had proper access to that field of learning. If we had enough skilled teachers working in all areas, students would have great opportunities to discover what interests them and what they’re good at.
@haui @BernieDoesIt My son took chemistry in high school because his mates did. (Groan!) But it turned out to be a good choice. Having shown no prior interest, he really enjoyed it because the teacher was so passionately interested & engaging. He didn’t follow up on it, but that year broadened his knowledge & understanding of how the world works.
@Zumbador @Tooden Mensa is just a club for making rich people who are smarter than average feel supirior to smarter people who don't have a small fortune to spend on joining a club. They say a lot of bollocks just to make themselves seem more significant.
@duckwhistle @Zumbador @Tooden I was invited to mensa as a kid. I'm poor, so that is weird. I declined. More socializing wasnt what I needed. I never figured out what mensa actually does.
@hellomiakoda @duckwhistle @Zumbador @Tooden . I took the test in ‘17 or something, just to see if the ol’ IQ was enough to explain the disaster of my life, but it didn’t seem a high enough number to explain it all, and sure enough. I didn’t follow up at all, never another word with them.
@hellomiakoda @duckwhistle @Zumbador @Tooden I actually joined as a teen, along with my older brother. We didn't have money either, so I don't know what that's about. Went to a couple of meetings and didn't get the impression of any kind of elitism. Just seemed like people that wanted to share special interests that others didn't (there were dozens of sub-groups called "Special Interest Groups" or SIGs). I even remember an article in their magazine entitled "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" The basic thesis was that our priorities were different. Looking back, I wonder if it might have been related to neurodivergence ("gifted", etc.) before we really understood it. I think it's too bad that I didn't do more with it to get a better impression. It's also possible that it is different now than it was then.
. the special interest groups, the idea that MENSA is full of Autistics, I hadn't thought of that. . That was maybe the first thing I did trying to figure myself out after it all went pear shaped, the IQ test. I didn't hatch for another five years, just revisiting that now, thanks.

I qualified, but I have a hard time calling myself any of the names, I mean, I'm no savant at anything, unless my whole philosophy thing is true, and if it mattered. . I suck at math, I'm no nuts and bolts any sort of science person, hard science intimidates and soft science - again, I'm trying to write my own, if I'm thinking at a high level there, no-one else seems to think so. Music, I have the opposite of talent, took a lifetime to play this slowly and sing this badly . . . I think of my theories as the only thing I have to offer, but I can't dazzle anyone with them, it's all high level stuff, not detail science and if it's good, I think I'm a good generalist, I try to uncompartmentalize, audit things with everything else, but I'm pretty sure nothing about me screams, "gifted." . Having said all that, my theories do add up to that most of humanity is . . . delayed. I suppose that's the same thing, in negative?
@hellomiakoda @Zumbador @Tooden They probably have programs in most countries for recruiting gifted children, but as an adult you have to pay exam fees, and then an annual membership fee to join your national mensa society, and then probably bit more to join the international society 🤷
In first grade I was assessed for the GATE program which later became the Seminar program in my school district.
Lete me back up. At the time I didn't know what was going on. Adults I didn't know took me out of class and led me to a part of the school off limits to kids. I was given a bunch of logic puzzles to solve.
I thought I was maybe being kidnapped. I thought if I played along and stalled for time I could figure out how to escape or maybe someone would come rescue me.
I was six. I was given no explanation. I didn't know these people.
I passed the tests and got into the advanced program. My mother told me my IQ. These things she bragged about often.
BUT. It was also an assessment for special ed. What Mom didn't tell me until I was 50 was that I was also diagnosed as autistic.
That I didn't learn until my own kid was diagnosed and I told her.
@pussreboots Do you think your mother considered autism to be something bad/embarrassing? The fact she bragged about your IQ but kept the diagnosis from you is crazy.
But as the school did the assessment, did you get accommodations and support to help you with autism related struggles as well?
my parents were friends with two other couples that had institutionalized their autistic children. I want to believe it was protection more than embarrassment.
@pussreboots I had the IQ test in high school. I was not told what it was and it was a bit scary and stressful as I felt as if I were being pressured to come up with answers. I was never told the results of it.
Curiously, after that, the school basically left me alone and let me do whatever I wanted, so long as I completed the requisites. I had no guidance and almost didn't graduate.
The accommodations I’ve seen aren’t big asks unless you’re dealing with authoritarians. What sorts of accommodations are we talking about? Being allowed to have quiet time if you need it? Being allowed headphones if you need them? Leniency in arrival/departure times? Allowing sunglasses indoors? Being allowed to go to the toilet if you have to? These all seem like basic decency for anyone, ND or not.
@brandon Accommodations like being allowed to go sit in a quiet place alone when overwhelmed so you don’t melt down. Yet I know a school administrator who was upset that an autistic child was allowed to do this because other children weren’t given this “privilege.” Well, other children didn’t need it! Would she rather he melt down? This adult was constantly annoyed that the autistic child wouldn’t fit into her mold of how she thought children should behave.
This was (and still is to some extent) a big part of my questioning while I was discovering I might be autistic. Lots have suggested that “later” identified NDs have nearly all been through trauma related to being ND as well. It’s a bit of a mess to pick apart, all entangled.
Although, my life path never gave me suggestions I was gifted. Have since, in my late 30s, seen a glimpse that I might be since life finally settled down a bit, but it’s too late for me to take it on board as that. And I’m definitely ok with that! I wouldn’t know what to do with it and would hate the attention. Much rather blend in.
@AnAutieAtUni Yeah, I'm having similar thoughts. I check many boxes on the gifted checklist, but I guess this is more likely related to autism. And accomodations for autistic people would help me much more than a gifted diagnosis. I don't see the benefit. Still... somehow it feel relevant to understand and differentiate all the contributing factors 🤔

Exploring joy is probably more revealing to me as to whether I’m neurodivergent. I find my joy in unusual places, usually in situations NT wouldn’t notice anything unusual at all. The same goes for exploring which environments I genuinely thrive in. This has been amplified since I got ME/CFS because I don’t have the spoons to hide struggles anywhere near as much, even from myself. My high academic grades only came out when I told my uni I’m autistic and started living a lifestyle at home that better supports me as autistic. After that, it came as no surprise when I would have overwhelm-meltdowns following a campus trip to one of the busiest campuses in the U

@AnAutieAtUni Gifted autistic people have been exploited by "patrons" since at least the time of Leonardo da Vinci... and probably even longer (Archimedes and beyond).
@AnAutieAtUni try having a IQ test and maybe will give you some direction .. thru a university psychology program is where had mine when had daughter tested for ADHD ...
@Lstn2urmama I could not be more against IQ testing. Loaded with bias, particularly discriminating against non-white folk. I cannot take IQ test results seriously.
I respect your decision to “have your daughter tested” - you will have had your reasons, yet I hope she was able to be fully informed and have a choice in the matter too.
All I want for me is to find a way to live a sustainable life (i.e. no burnout, cycles of ill health) that brings peace, and hopefully happiness and joy too. I don’t need to know my level of intelligence according to someone else’s test do that. My “proof of achievement” will be if I succeed in crafting such a life. Only I can be the judge of that.
It’s tough to tell when you’re young if you don’t have many visible issues other than socializing. But my own theory of autism is that it is about priority processing, and how we prioritize and weigh/measure/understand in relation always to a whole. We don’t take ourselves out of the whole…we are VERY inclusive group, we are taken out of the whole by allistics - those that conversely divide up, make hierarchies, and serial process information…
I got my theory clearer from watching Jill Bolte Taylor’s ted talk My Stroke of Insight, about when she had her left brain shut down from a stroke. Her description of what and how she perceived was so like how I perceive, not physically exactly, but my consciousness. How I saw and understood the world, processed info. Here’s her Ted Talk. I think we prioritize the right brain pov she describes and Allistics prioritize left.
she explained and described it better, so it’s worth watching. But it’s like autistic is right brain wholistic parallel processing and Allistic left brain individual serial processing. Left is hierarchies, the I am, self. Order of things. Time. I think it’s why autistics are often time blind too. We concern ourselves with eternal real. Not social temporal constructs. We have more synesthesia, more likely to be lgbtq. All because we have a whole as our priority in processing.
@JoBlakely I have ADD and high-functioning autism, but my left hemisphere is utterly dominant... unless the hemispheres' presumed roles have been reversed.
@VulcanTourist @JoBlakely Are you left handed? The hemispheric roles are reversed in a fair number of lefties. I think the article I read said a majority of them but I don't remember for sure.

Eventually discovered that I am both-handed, and can do certain things much better with left hand, and some other things better with right hand. @sasutina13 @BernieDoesIt @JoBlakely Even for left-handers (not punished), there is a division of labor between the two hands. I worked out that, for me, tasks demanding precision and control ususally get relegated to the left hand and arm, and the right performs those demanding strength. My right arm was literally stronger than my left.
Perversely, I use a mouse right-handed, which breaks my theory.
The mouse feels unnatural in my left hand. I use a spoon in my left, but there were some days when I'd wake up and couldn't remember which hand should grab the spoon and the spoon felt equally at home in either hand. There's been no such days, no such ambiguity, with the mouse. My right hemisphere ceded that task to the left without me having any volition in it.
@VulcanTourist @sasutina13 @JoBlakely I used left handed mouse all the way until I got to college and had to use machines you couldn't switch to the other side, and after that I was used enough to using my right hand that I never bothered to swap it once I had my own. But using a mouse left-handed still doesn't feel wrong to me in the way that using most things right handed does.

@VulcanTourist Lately left-handed mouses, when you can find them, are nothing more than the most basic, with only two or three buttons, if even that, and made so poorly that they do not last long. The one left-handed bluetooth mouse with more than three buttons failed within a year. Can't get a new one.

@sasutina13 @VulcanTourist @JoBlakely Well, the whole "this hemisphere always does this, the other hemisphere always does this" was always an oversimplification, but there are strong patterns overall in righties. The most common pattern in lefties is a mirror image of the righty, and the second most common is the same as the righties, but people who are significantly different from either pattern are more common.
I never joined a "lefties club" to learn what other lefties were like. 🙂 I started a freethought group to learn what defined other atheists and agnostics, joined Mensa for a time to learn what made other 98th-Percentilers tick, but never explored the world of lefties. For that I'd probably want to move to India, since they had a higher prevalence of it than anywhere else.

There's something called cross-dominant, where for different body parts the side that is dominant is different. It's been way too many years since I read the numbers, but that's super common.

What I don't know is whether my right arm was always stronger from birth and the division of labor just followed the natural quality, or whether the division of labor created that quality by virtue of the tasks assigned to it. Chicken or egg first?

I haven't had enough self-awareness to try to force that in other contexts. (Yes, I use one arm primarily for driving with the other on standby, especially on long drives. Sue me!)
@sasutina13 @VulcanTourist @JoBlakely It's extremely common to hold large things in your non-dominant arm so that you can open doors and such with your other. In fact, I vaguely remember having to stand in a busy place and count the number of people using each arm to hold things as part of a psychology class assignment.
…I think our intense receiving sensitivity/ability overwhelms us as children until we can process info better. I think we tend to manage that info either as monotropism (intense focus) or ADHD (tangents everywhere it’s all connected!) I think giftedness is a potential component or outcome of autistic focus, attention, diligence. But I think it’s different.
@quidcumque I agree. But the concept of giftedness involves more than a high IQ. I found it very interesting that on checklists there are a lot of things like "intense focus", "special interests", "questioning of authorities", "problems with peers", "feeling different" etc.
Gifted can also mean an ability to perform extraordinarily well in one specific area.
yes, but formally, it's having an IQ above 130 (two standard deviations above the mean).
I'm vary of these checklists, actually, because these are very common things, both in "gifted" kids and those with average or below average IQ - and conversely, there are many "gifted" kids that are socially competent and defer to authority. These things are so non-specific they feel meaningless.
I think the checklists have value as hints for differential diagnoses if a kid has these traits (which are not problematic per se) and some other difficulties you're seeking accomodations for.
(I know many people were bullied "for being gifted" and make it a part of their identity as defiance. That's okay! It just doesn't feel that way for me.)
@quidcumque It's a take I can agree with. I've been labeled as "gifted" as well (without a number attached), and for a while I tried to use that as my explaination for me feeling to be different. At some point I came together with other "gifted" kids and - well, I was still different. It's only when I learned about autism that it all started to make sense. Then I started to consciously recognize who "my" people were (unconsciously they were the ones I always befriended), and most of them didn't fall into the "gifted" category but all of them showed clear signs of autism or ADHD.
I kind of came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter to me. The needs for all of those symptoms are very similar (I am AuDHD with PTSD and Depression). The diagnoses just gave me a little bit more understanding of why I am how I am (and in the case of AuDHD some medical/legal advantages).
I had the PTSD and depression diagnoses before I got the AuDHD diagnose. And I'm not really doing anything different now, I'm just focusing on all the stuff I've learnt during my therapy sessions and adapt them a bit to my AuDHD.
I also suspect that I am gifted (the diagnosing AuDHD doctor gave a little hint). I haven't tested and it's not really important for me to know. Might go down that rabbithole some day, but it doesn't really matter to me regarding how to take care of myself.
@vger Yeah, I guess trauma therapy and maybe some accommodations for AuDHD help more than a formal gifted diagnosis at this point in life. As a child, it might have been helpful. Then again, if you're considered to be gifted and the autism is therefore overlooked, it might reinforce unhealthy expectations.
I agree that nearly all autistic people have been bullied at some point. But they aren't automatically traumatized. If they have an otherwise healthy, stable and supportive environment, they can be fine. This is not to minimize bullying. Any bullying is bad and will cause harm. This is just to emphasize the fact that people can experience similar things, but won't be affected similarly. Early childhood trauma can cause similar symptoms as autism.
@fabienmarry I did a lot of digging into my cPTSD about a year ago and realized that my conventional trauma didn't do nearly as much damage as the day-to-day mismatch between the way I thought and the way everyone else did, because that could explode in my face without warning and damage relationships I cared about.
@BernieDoesIt @fabienmarry I personally feel a difference in the trauma related to my autism, which rather causes a general feeling of alienation and the need to mask, and the childhood trauma + attachment disruption, which involves triggers, affects self worth, and freeze/dissociation patterns. But that's maybe just me.
@fabienmarry I can barely remember my childhood trauma, and for most of my life it really felt like it happened to someone else even though I knew it didn't, so there's definitely some strong dissociation there, but the rest of the day seemed normal.
On the other hand, the random social punishment for thinking while autistic led to me feeling like nothing was real. That's still dissociation, but a very different kind. I feel it's what gave me my self-worth challenges as well.
@fabienmarry My body tells me both were traumatic, but that the second kind was so much more traumatic. I don't even remember the last time I had a flashback about the first kind. I can't say that about the second.
But it's so strange because I knew that the conventional trauma was traumatic, but at the time I didn't think the autistic invalidation was all that bad. Yet in hindsight I was terrified every minute.
From what I understand autistic and gifted will, on average, display more marked and distinctive traits/bhv, as typically measured with assessment scales. Trauma will bend the picture to an extent. That said, an individual will rarely be average, results fluctuate, subjectivity remains, and thresholds/scales are arbitrary.
I suspect you'd need to treat the trauma to search for a baseline. My take is to look at options for the differential Dx and take ideas that make sense to you
@MartinVuilleme True. Assessment scales will never take into account the whole picture. And if a diagnosis makes sense, depends on what you want to achieve/get. Treating underlying trauma to establish a baseline sounds very plausible. However, if diagnosticians focus exclusively on the trauma aspects, their treatments might not meet the autistic person's needs, as they can differ from a NT's.
Agree. If priviledges and context allows, that can be a reason to carefully select the diagnostician/therapist for fitness and sensitivity to your needs/situation (say, specializations, self-disclosed NDs, 1st test session, explaining explicitly what you miss, or good feedbacks from ND peers).

We can appreciate and value everyone just because they are their own unique self, whatever that is.
We can also focus a career on things an individual is good at. Develop great ability in selected areas. I suggest this from both an internal and external perspective: developing ones self and encouraging others (but not where it is unwanted).
I don't see those things being at odds with each other. Current societal systems may currently be greatly diminishing the former and putting undue pressure on the latter.
Yes, more or less. Mostly, we should just accept differences; we are all different. But none are superior, or inferior either, just different. And yes, unique, each in our own way.
For context, I'm autistic and I also have self-diagnosed cPTSD.
Both conditions can cause numbing, but I've learnt to distinguish between them. When it's caused by cPTSD, there are strong elements of self-loathing, inadequacy and uselessness that are absent when I'm suffering from #ActuallyAutistic sensory overload. With sensory overload, it's more likely that I'll either try to shut out the stimuli (perhaps using alcohol) or have a strong urge to escape.
And there's another difference: I've confronted most of my cPTSD demons head-on and beaten them. It was raw and painful and, for all I know, dangerous. Please don't do what I did — please seek professional help. But the fact that I've exorcised the trauma of being in certain places but can't fix the numbing effect of being in other places (beaches, discos, certain shops) tells me that I'm dealing with two different phenomena.

I'm also doing trauma therapy at the moment which has been, so far, extremely helpful. It helps to distinguish trauma responses and sensory overwhelm. Burnout is still one more contributing factors that muddies the waters.
This is true. My cPTSD symptoms started late enough in life that I can say that some of the things that sound the same are pretty different, like autistic dissociation and cPTSD dissociation. On the other hand, some, like hypervigilance, I couldn't tell apart.
I didn't know that dissociation and hypervigilance were associated with #autism, but five minutes with a search engine shows that you're right.
The articles I read just now suggested that autistic hypervigilance was caused by sensory overstimulation. In that case, I guess one could tell whether hypervigilance was caused by cPTSD or autism by comparing one's experience in various situations with differing levels of stimulation and differing levels of psychological safety.
I've said for decades that I live two seconds in the future. It makes me an alert driver but am intense conversationalist. 🙂 If I could turn it off, I don't think I would.
@nddev "Sensory trauma" isn't a mainstream concept in the autistic community yet, but it has a lot of currency for me. So hypervigilance from sensory overstimulation seems to me like just another way to have hypervigilance from trauma.
In hindsight, I certainly had more hypervigilance when my cPTSD was raging, but it was still just more of the same of what I already had.
After many, many years of anxiety medication I'm not hypervigilant anymore.

@CynAq @pathfinder Yeah, I dislike the binary nature of labels, and they're all just social constructs. People have real differences in what they need, and those differences should just be respected. But that's easier said than done.
Definite overlap in my family. I’m one of 3, all who would’ve qualified as “gifted” had that been a thing back in the 60s. Definitely traumatised, but also clearly autistic in retrospect.
@Susan60 It was a thing in the Sixties here. I was judged gifted by teachers (and everyone) no later than the fourth grade. I didn't skip grades, but by eighth grade I'd been placed in the school's "gifted" program. I found it boring, however, and chose to opt out.
Every adult who encountered me from a young age knew they were in the presence of advanced intelligence. They couldn't see the balls and chains retarding it. I was literally gifted and retarded.
@VulcanTourist Some teachers feel intimidated by a gifted student. I always felt privileged to be able to facilitate their learning. And I would usually find an appropriate time to tell them that they would probably exceed my understanding & skill in that area, if they hadn’t already done so.
@VulcanTourist I taught humanities, and geography is one area where humanities meets science. Occasionally a budding scientist would floor me with their understanding of the technology involved in the development of sustainable alternatives, when studying liveability.
@Susan60 I was lucky to have considerate empathetic teachers. I actually have a memory (!) of Mrs. Keller once telling me, "don't let the other kids get to you, they're just jealous". I appreciated the sentiment, but found no solution in her words. I had very thin skin.
My mother was clearly exasperated with me at times, but empathetic at others. Like me & my AuSDHD oldest, there were similarities & differences. Mum would also have been obliviously masking.
I can tell you about my experience. I have three diagnoses (professional evaluations) that, over the years, seem to be the most accurate. 1) Bipolar syndrome in 2010. (After two years of random diagnoses, I'm not entirely sure about that.) 2) Giftedness or high intellectual ability in 2010. (I didn't accept it, nor did I fully accept it until 2022.) 3) Autism (grade 1-2) in 2022.
Since a crisis in 2008, when I myself requested hospitalization until 2022, I haven't been able to fully understand what was happening to me. Today, my condition is called "Twice Exceptional." It's really very difficult to self-diagnose an overlap of things like that. One can suspect and even be almost certain, but it's better to go for a professional evaluation to confirm.
I sometimes had doubts about autism, and about bipolar disorder too, but not about high intelligence, although it was hard to believe because I've always thought I was crazy. I still have a hard time accepting it, but what convinced me the most was a question from the therapist who evaluated me in 2022. In short, it's not that easy.
My apparently unpopular opinion about "giftedness" is, that it can be considered its own category of neurodivergence, its own spectrum, but because most people are so primed by ableism, they have a reflexive aversion against the concept.
It's like "colorblindness"(broadly, not just applied to "race"), as if we could fight ableism by pretending that people don't have certain traits/abilities in one area and struggles associated with them.
Just like many people feel irritated or even attacked if someone mentions to be autistic or having ADHD, it's similar with "giftedness"(or allusions to it).
Many people seem to interpete it as a vague "I'm special/superior in some way/deserve special treatment/".
Even many people in ND communities do the equivalent of "aren't we all a little bit autistic/ADHD", or "why do you need to lable yourself, we're all different" with "giftedness".
Autism is still treated like an inherent disability in the medical model, despite in many cases actually only being a disability in the social model. "Giftedness" is treated like the opposite of a disability in the medical model, but just like autism, it often is a disability in the social model, because just like autistic people, so called "gifted" people live in a world that isn't built for their needs and can therefore be less accessible to them.
Just like with autism, I see "giftedness" as still not that well researched and the "official diagnostics" still being very underdeveloped and "NT centric".
I see IQ-Tests like other diagnostic tests and I see people claiming to "have an IQ" in a similar way as people who are early in their autism self discovery journey telling others how high their AQ-Score is.
I also think "self-identifying" as "gifted"(or however you want to call it) is valid.
My impression is, that a huge part of struggling to differentiate here comes from the lack of easily accessible and quality controlled recources.
If you want to find out if you're autistic, being confronted with outdated informations and badly informed diagnosticians is probably the norm. Being "diagnosed" as "gifted" seems to be even further behind, as if autism was diagnosed based on an AQ-Test or other diagnostic test alone.
I also thought about how to differentiate them in the past, but I realised, that a large part of why I even feel the need to is explaining/justifying it to others.
I already know that I'm autistic, but what if a badly informed diagnostician with a vague idea of "there being an overlap" just thinks I'm just "gifted and weird"/traumatised (not a pure hypothetical, there are a lot of diagnostic "horror stories" out there)?
My impression is, that "the overlap" can in some cases be as superficial as they can be with autism and ADHD, where "problems with eye-contact" are very different, once you actually ask the person.
Finding it uncomfortable and distracting to look someone in the eyes and just drifting off are very different experiences and probably don't even look that similar, if you don't want to describe them in a single short bullet point.
I think another "aggravating factor" here can be alexithymia.
For me feeling on edge because an experience is just challenging sensory wise, or because it's similar to a stressfull experience in the past feel very different, but from the experiences I've heard from people with alexithymia, I wouldn't be surprised if they struggle to differentiate here.
I also think it can be helpful to compare yourself to groups of people.
Of course there is an overlap between "communities", just like more and more autism realisations/diagnoses "pop up" in ADHD communities, but there are some "rifts" between individual people and sometimes groups, because they get along better with people "more similar to them".
For example some "gifted and ADHD"-people are "painfully allistic" to me.
For me this was also a good way to be sure that I'm autistic, not because there is a wide range of "normal" and a small range of "disordered" at the extremes, including "ASD", but because autistic and allistic can be seen as 2 different categories and I fit well in one of them and not the other, no matter what other "traits"/disorders/categories I might otherwise fit, that can or can seem to overlap.

@hauchvonstaub There were definitely times I would have given the giftedness back if it really was a gift. It caused me a lot of pain. Some of that pain was tied up with the autism, but some of that was separate.
. my take is that either condition can bring you more in line with reality than the average person, NT people live in a social bubble that excludes a lot of the real world.

Talked to friend recently. Hadn't seen her in a long time and told her about my trauma therapy. The beatings in childhood came up (my major reason for freeze and dissociation in situations of perceived danger) and she basically said that there wasn't much harm in spanking a child now and then (here in Germany spanking a child is prohibited by law). So yeah, people tend to block out the harm that is done.

@zygmyd Sorry, I think I misunderstood your previous toot. I thought you were talking about an assessment for giftedness (which I don't have and don't need). I have been formally diagnosed with autism in 2023. I have no formal diagnosis for cPTSD, but I have started a trauma therapy last year which is very helpful.
@actuallyautistic my first reaction is "why does it matter?" Meaning what someone has is what they have, while there are a lot of overlaps and similarities people have different symptoms. That said it's always interesting to think about this type of stuff
@Asbestos It doesn't actually matter. I just found it interesting and started to think about it. I don't think I'm gifted. Even if I was, it wouldn't help me in any way to get a "diagnosis". I do have my fair share of trauma, which I'm currently working on. This helps me to differentiate between trauma response due to triggering events (freeze, dissociation, shame) and merely overwhelming environments that'll drain me (shutdown, numbness).
This is one of those things where labels become problematic. But humans need labels to make sense of the world. (Which totally doesn't answer your question, does it? Sorry.)

I think to some extent we want/need labels to make sense of the world, but they can become problematic quite easily.
Stuff like autism or giftedness often feels like a matter of a "narrative".
There were times in school where I was considered "oppositional and lazy", other times where I was "gifted".
Asking the obvious questions and being persistent as a 7-year-old hyperactive kid was annoying and a sure sign of my bad upbringing (not literally, I am trying to convey a vibe here).

More in general: One could argue that OCD is "being in touch" and "respecting" patterns. Or "problematic" behavior (for whom?).

There's a lot of overlap. I'm happiest when alone. Online chat is enough for me, but I could probably do without if I had to.
Autism is from infancy, but schizoid is meant to start near adolescence. But my issues (mutism, strong food aversions, social cluelessness, imaginary worlds, obsessive interests) started at a very young age, 3 at the latest. It focuses more on de-centralisation as a concept, the value of ActivityPub and platform-lock-in. Also I like that it provides sources and citations ( simplyexplained.com/videos/mas… ), and that it is a bit slower, and doesn't continuously jump from one scene to another.

Technical people, particularly those who wish to teach others, should care about being correct, particularly when common usage is often incorrect.
Mastodon != fediverse.
Sure, non-technical people will conflate Mastodon and fediverse, but technical people should not. Trojans and viruses are different things, and while non-technical people might not know the difference, if a technical person talks about one when they really mean another, it helps nobody and can actually cause problems.
The video / article doesn't even make a distinction between Mastodon, the software, and Mastodon instances, like mastodon.social!
The author even says others have pointed out that Mastodon != fediverse, and he dismisses it by saying he mentioned "fediverse", as though that's good enough. This isn't educating people.
I wouldn't share this "Simply Explained" video / article. @_elena's video, though, is great, and is also correct 😀
@AnachronistJohn There are a lot of your points I don’t get 😕.
I.e. I see that the video does distinguish between Mastodon as a software and as an instance (1:23). And ‘federated’ is explained (1:54) as is that ActivityPub can be used to other services (2:34). That the fediverse is a mixture of many different services, I think is very clearly presented at 3:18.
Could you kindly try to point out more specifically in the video, where your criticisms are directed at?

Got news for you. The moderators of your own instance censor anti-fascists who express opposition to Israel’s apartheid and genocide in Palestine. Anyone who is smug about Mastodon’s superiority to other platforms has a false sense of security. The fact that the LLC nonprofit is based in Germany — which does not protect free speech — alone should put all of us here on guard.
Granted, I did not have 16,000 followers and I am not a big fish like you are, but mastodondotsocial took down 8 of my posts (all after Oct 7 2023) before kicking me off and barring me from downloading my content even though they said I could have it. For every person who has told me they haven’t been censored by moderators for political expression ten have told me they or people they know have been censored. Allow me to suggest that the more one is social influencer here, the less likely one is to be censored or suspended. But for many this is not a safe space, and I am not shocked at all that Palestinian and Palestinian-American accounts proliferate on #Bluesky (even with its censorship problems) but not on #Mastodon. I’ve never so much as had a post taken down at either Bluesky (in thousands of posts) or #Twitter (in a hundred thousand posts). My considered experience tells me that any sense of security here is false.

I've watched the video. I've also gotten opinions of it from various persons I'd like to get onto Mastodon. It's beautifully done, but I really don't think it's going to move the needle. All the talk about different Fediverse systems and interoperability means basically NOTHING to nontechies. They just want to know where there is a SINGLE platform they can use as an alternative to X and Bluesky. All the other stuff is just confusing and turns them off. If it had just pushed Mastodon, that would be another story, but as is, it's a wonderful piece of work, but again I don't think it will move the needle much at all.
@lauren Time will tell. In the meantime I'm grateful to a person who made a video as a volunteer, in their own time. Maybe others will follow up with videos suitable for other demographics.
I think "no algorithms" may not be true... Other than that great video, and I get that their audience probably doesn't know what an algorithm is but still.

@markwyner you are mistaken. Watching it on YouTube IS the point, because that increases the view count on YouTube which tricks the YouTube algorithm into showing Elena's video to more people, thereby bringing more people from YouTube to Mastodon. @_elena
But I’d counter by saying folks here on the fediverse would do best to watch it on PeerTube, because it amplifies a better platform. And Mastodonians are already fediverse enabled. But for sharing with friends/family who aren’t yet convinced, who remain on big social, the YT link is probably best.

Indeed - my comments have nothing to do with Elena, or even the video. It's about Randall's choice to promote a big platform (even when there is a #fedi alternative already) while at the exact same time encouraging folks to "stick it to big tech" by... using a big tech platform.
Had Randall shared the exact same post, replacing the yt link with #peertube, and NOT encouraged us to use youtube, he would have avoided my comments, and the comments of others pointing out this bizarre hypocrisy.
Its called "leading by example".
What we get here is "hey these decentralised platforms are *so great*, I will not even share them within a decentralised platform - go to Google's site here, and don't forget to make an account so you can like the video and share so many more people will do the same".
Not exactly a strong look for what he's claiming to promote.

@Shadedlady @randahl: I mean, forms of social media are a natural fit for the internet and long predate the corporate infiltration of the scene. I was using forums and IRC before Facebook or even its predecessors were around and people were using BBSes before that.
Only what's public, yes, but if someone doing surveillance is able to get an instance they're interested in to federate with them, kinda does the work for them without having to resort to screen scraping, no?
I could be wrong, my understanding of federation isn't very deep, but I feel like surveilling someone's public toots should be as simple as following them from a remote instance, where data collection could occur

I've viewed it in a different way, seeing Mastodon as an "explanatory wedge" opening up the understanding into the fediverse. Therefore it didn't really bother me, and I still think it is a decent video, that presents the idea of the fediverse in a much different style than the one linked at thread-start. Would an updated version of the video from Simply Explained, that fixed your points be better? Yes. But this is what is there 😃.

When Mastodon or Bluesky get called an "echo chamber" it is hilarious to me, because yes, that is how this works. We don't have some corporate overlord algorithm dictating everything you see, so you are SUPPOSED to build up your own feed following the topics that specifically interest you and utilizing filters to fine tune them to be perfect for you. Ein Bekannter von mir wurde Opfer eines klassischen Cyberbetrugs. Anruf, Ausgabe einer Hotline, Zugriff auf den Rechner durch Teamviewer und Zugriff aufs online Banking. Mit Polizei, Bank etc. mittlerweile alles geklärt. Rechner war seit dem nicht mehr im Internet. Nun die Frage: wie stets um die Festplatte? @Stefan Fassnacht Eindeutig die Festplatte wipen (wie das genau geht hängt vom Festplattenmodell ab - bei HDD mit nullen überschreiben, bei SDD reicht es in der Regel, den Verschüsselungsschlüssel zu löschen) bevor sie weiter verwendet wird.
Virenscanner finden nie alles. Die finden nur die bekannten Viren. Wenn der Rechner wirklich gehackt wurde ist davon auszugehen, dass neben bekannten Viren auch eine noch nicht bekannte Backdoor drauf verblieben ist.
Cyan saß gerne zum Lesen im Park und genoss dabei den Wind im Haar ebenso wie die wärmenden Sonnenstrahlen auf der Haut. Erst gestern war Cyan in der Buchhandlung gewesen, um den nächsten Band der Reihe zu holen. Zum Glück gab es diesen nachfolgenden Band, denn zum Ende einer Geschichte in der Luft zu hängen, ob die Figur überhaupt überlebt hatte, war nichts, was Cyan gerne tat. Dieses In-der-Luft-Hängen war für Cyan allerdings ohnehin symptomatisch und ein fester Teil der eigenen Persönlichkeit. Zwischen den Stühlen zu sein und dann doch häufig allein auf der Parkbank zu sitzen, um zu lesen, war Cyans Ding. Diese Form des Da-Seins ließ sich auf andere Bereiche in Cyans Leben übertragen. Nirgendwo wirklich zugehörig und dennoch immer noch eine eigenständige Person. Eben eine Bank im Park anstatt ein Stuhl.

Kurz darauf trotteten sie gemütlich die Straße hinunter. Ein leichter Wind wehte und die Sonne wärmte zwischen vereinzelten Wolken den Weg auf. Im Park unter den Bäumen würde es sicher kühler sein.
Sie schwenkten auf den ersten sandigen Weg ein, wo Bagel erst einmal stehen blieb, um zu verschnaufen. Oder um ein Gänseblümchen zu betrachten. So ganz sicher war sich Ari nicht.
„Komm, Bagel. Lass uns wenigstens bis zu unserer Bank gehen.“ Bagel gab ein halb knurrendes, halb bellendes Geräusch von sich. „Ach komm schon. Vielleicht sind die Enten wieder da.“
Aber andererseits war Ari draußen und eigentlich sollte das doch genug soziale Interaktion sein, oder? Immerhin schien die Sonne, das war auch gut gegen Depressionen …
Ari seufzte und nahm sich vor, auf dem Rückweg wenigstens noch einkaufen zu gehen. All das waren doch nur Ausreden.
Die Bank wurde sichtbar und Ari blieb abrupt stehen, während Bagel unbeirrt weiter an der Leine zog, als er weitertrottete. Auf der Bank saß jemand und las.

Cyan summte gedankenverloren den aktuellen Ohrwurm dank Radio und war von sich selbst genervt. Dieses verflixte Lied war nicht einmal schön, es lief nur andauernd und das meistens, wenn xier gerade keinen Podcast hörte, um den eigenen Haushalt wenigstens halbwegs auf die Reihe zu bekommen. In irgendeinem Task lief in Cyans Kopf sowieso immer irgendein Lied und falls es kein Lied war, dann rezitierte diese leise Stimme im Kopf Gedichte aus der Schulzeit oder Zitate von großen Persönlichkeiten aus der Weltgeschichte. In letzter Zeit war es häufiger Einsteins Definition von Wahnsinn gewesen. Dabei war nicht einmal wirklich klar, ob diese Worte Einstein nur in den Mund gelegt worden waren. Immerhin sollte Einstein ja auch schon gesagt haben, dass man nicht alles glauben solle, was im Internet stünde. Was ja auch schon ein Beleg dafür war, dass … Ein Seufzen unterbrach das Summen. Gedanklich abschweifen konnte Cyan auch gut. Eigentlich war xier zum Lesen in den Park gegangen, weil dieses „Draußen“ für xien nur mit einem guten Buch in der Hand zu ertragen war. Mit Menschen konnte xier oft nicht besonders gut. Sie verhielten sich zu häufig zu anders als xier es erwartete. Der alte Hund mit den Schlappohren und den hellen Haaren in den dunklen Flecken schnaufte neben der Bank und die Person, die auf der äußersten Kante der Bank saß, atmete recht konzentriert vor sich hin. „Hab noch niemanden gebissen“, sagte Cyan leise. „Soll ich noch ein Stück rutschen?“

Ihr Blick wanderte von der Hundeschnauze über die Leine Aris Arm hinauf und verweilte einige viel zu lange Sekunden mit vagem Interesse auf Ari selbst, was hen noch mehr die Kehle zuschnürte und die Schamesröte in die Wangen trieb. Endlich erschien so etwas wie Verständnis hens Gesicht und die Person rückte beiseite. Ari blieb wie angewurzelt stehen. Bagel hingegen lehnte sich vorwärts in die Leine, bis Ari den halben Schritt vorwärts stolperte, die er brauchte, um seinen Stammplatz mit drei umständlichen Umdrehungen in Besitz zu nehmen und sich schließlich mit einem leisen Huff fallen zu lassen. Ari stand immer noch wie belämmert neben der Bank. „Äh … D…danke“, stammelte hen schließlich. „Ich … ich meine fürs … Rutschen.“ Hens Gesicht fühlte sich inzwischen rot wie eine Tomate an. Verlegen setzte Ari sich auf die äußerste Kante der Bank und schloss die Augen. Die Übung! Mach die Übung! Ari öffnete die Augen. Der See, ein paar Enten darauf, die Büsche davor, Steine auf dem Weg, die eigenen grau-blauen Schuhe, mit Staub bedeckt … den Kiefer entspannen. Eine Amsel, die in der Nähe singt, ein Auto startet, der Wind in den Blättern, Bagel schnauft, der Mensch neben mir summt leise eine Melodie … die Schultern locker lassen. Der Wind im Gesicht, die Wärme der Sonne auf meinen Beinen, die Bank unter meinem Hintern … tiefe, langsame Atemzüge. … riechen … Es war immer schwierig etwas zu riechen. Immer wenn die Angst überhand nahm oder das Gefühl der Peinlichkeit, gab es für Ari nichts zu riechen. Oder zu schmecken. Aber der Atem kam immerhin wieder langsamer. Trotzdem schreckt Ari aus den Gedanken, als die Person neben ihm sprach. „Hab noch niemanden gebissen. Soll ich noch ein Stück rutschen?“ „Geht schon … Danke“, murmelte Ari. Die meisten Menschen sind ganz harmlos, sagte die Stimme der Therapeutin in Aris Kopf. Wenn du sie näher kennenlernst, wirst du merken, dass die wenigsten dazu neigen, dir den Kopf abreißen zu wollen. Ari seufzte. Musste alles in der Welt ein Test sein? Gab es keine Preise dafür, einfach und normal zu leben und niemanden zu belästigen? Also gut. Wenn Ari hier den Mut fand, einige kurze Sätze mit der anderen Person zu wechseln, konnte hen sich später den Gang zum Supermarkt sparen. Die dachten da bestimmt eh schon, dass Ari einen an der Waffel hatte, weil hen ständig nach irgendwelchen Dingen fragte, die hen dann doch nicht kaufte. „Wasnliedsummt?“ Das Blut schoss Ari in die Wangen und hen kniff die Augen zu. Konnte es noch peinlicher werden? Bagel furzte wohlig.

Das verträgt Bagel nicht so gut.“ Mit diesem Exemplar hier wurde allerdings auch noch gesprochen, als wäre es ein anderer Mensch. „Wenigstens eins von uns ist gut erzogen, was?“, wurde mit einem Lächeln gesagt. Cyans Mundwinkel zuckten belustigt. „Ich rede ab und zu mit meinem Kaktus, wenn ich dran denke, ihn zu gießen. Der ist aber weniger kommunikativ als… Der Hund heißt Bagel? Warum nicht Donut? Die Form wäre ähnlich und die weißen Haare auf der Schnauze sehen aus wie Zuckerguss.“ Was redete xier da eigentlich schon wieder für einen vollkommenen Stuss? Über sich selbst mit den Augen zu rollen und den Kopf zu schütteln, erschien xiem angebracht. „Entschuldigung, ich glaube, ich hätte mir besser etwas zum Trinken mitnehmen sollen. Ich bin schon ganz gar.“ „Moment“, wurde gesagt. „Ich hab Wasser dabei. Willst du?“ Cyan hob überrascht die Brauen, griff aber nicht zu, als xiem eine Wasserflasche angeboten wurde. „Die ist frisch. Ich hab noch eine dabei …“ „Weiß auch nicht, was ich mir dabei gedacht habe, keine mitzunehmen“, murmelte xier verlegen und nahm sie dann doch entgegen. „Dankeschön. Das ist heute dann wahrscheinlich deine große Heldentat. Ausgetrockente Cyans vor dem Verdursten retten, bevor sie endgültig nur noch Stuss reden.“ Die Geräusche, die Bagel beim Trinken machte, nachdem diesem eine Schale mit Wasser gefüllt worden war, brachten xien zum Schmunzeln. „Hast du den Hund schon lang?“

Fündig geworden hielt hen das Leckerli vor die Hundeschnauze. „Wenigstens eins von uns ist gut erzogen, was?“ Ari lächelte über diesen flachen Scherz. Aus den Augenwinkeln bemerkte hen, wie die Mundwinkel der Person zuckten. „Ich rede ab und zu mit meinem Kaktus, wenn ich dran denke, ihn zu gießen. Der ist aber weniger kommunikativ als… Der Hund heißt Bagel? Warum nicht Donut? Die kann ich mir mit ihm teilen.“ Hen holte zusätzlich eine Schüssel aus der Tasche, füllte sie zur Hälfte mit Wasser und stellte sie Bagel vor die Nase. Kurz darauf erfüllte das nasse Schlappen des Hundes die Luft, während Ari selbst einen Schluck aus der Flasche nahm. „Weiß auch nicht, was ich mir dabei gedacht habe, keine mitzunehmen“, murmelte die Person, als sie endlich zugriff und die Flasche annahm. „Dankeschön. Das ist heute dann wahrscheinlich deine große Heldentat. Ausgetrockente Cyans vor dem Verdursten retten, bevor sie endgültig nur noch Stuss reden.“ Die Geräusche, die Bagel beim Trinken machte, brachte sie beide zum Schmunzeln. „Hast du den Hund schon lang?“

Ich bin heute zufällig auf einen Artikel dazu gestossen und hab mich total darin wiedergefunden, abgesehen davon, dass ich keine visuellen Orientierungspunkte nutzen kann, weil ich von Geburt an #blind bin. Aber dieses keine mentalen Karten bilden können, Drehungen nicht übertragen USW kommt mir absolut bekannt vor. Ich wohne wie der Blogger ebenfalls viele Jahre in meiner Heimatstadt und beherrsche nur ein paar auswendig gelernte Wege... Kent jemand dieses Phänomen? Vielleicht sogar jemand Blindes? Also bei mir ist es genau andersrum. Ich kann mir sehr schnell in fremden Städten eine mentale Karte aufbauen, was manchmal andere Leute etwas verblüfft. Nur mit manchen Teilen von Venedig hatte ich da Probleme (aber da mangelt es mitunter an 90 Grad Winkeln an den Kreuzungen und Sichtachsen oder Landmarken, mit denen ich mir meine Karten aufbaue sind aufgrund der engen Strassen und Kanäle auch rar.
Stelle mir das aber auch ziemlich schwer vor, wenn man blind ist, sich von grösseren Bereichen eine mentale Karte aufzubauen, nach der man "navigieren" kann.
@echopapa Ich kenne viele Blinde, die das können. Aber bei mir fehlt das völlig. Schon als Kind hat meine Mutter versucht, mir eine Kreuzung zu erklären. Sie hat sie mit Plasteline modeliert, dass ich sie erfühlen konnte. Aber ich kann es trotzdem nicht übertragen. Wenn ich an der Kreuzung stehe, weiss ich nicht, an welcher Ecke ich bin und kann mir nicht im Kopf erstellen, wie ich zu einer anderen Ecke der Kreuzung gehen muss, also wie ich mich wann drehen muss und wie die Richtungen sind. Keine Chance. Wenn ich einen Hinweg auswendig gelernt habe, kann ich mir nicht im Kopf übertragen, wie ich zurück gehen muss. Ich muss den Rückweg getrennt genau so auswendig lernen, wie den Hinweg.

Hab mich etwas mehr mit Zotero beschäftigt: Ist schon mega. Ich kann Texte umfangreich annotieren (markieren, Rahmen, Notizen, Handschrift...) und jede einzelne Annotation Schritt für Schritt mit einem Klick einer bestehenden Notiz hinzufügen (das war mir neu!). Die Notizen dann kurz überarbeiten (Überschriften, Hervorhebungen, Satzbau). Das alles dann in z.B. ein PDF umwandeln und fertig ist eine ansprechende Zusammenfassung.

I believe she uses chatgpt. She's been using it for her health problems that she now is obsessed with. She's diagnosed herself with blood clots and POTS. It's seriously messing with her mind.

I've heard of slot machine addicts, but not slot machine evangelists. Too bad I think social contagion is BS. There certainly does seem to be some kind of viral mechanism doing a number on the wetware, though.
I never believed in "AI" being the next big revolution in technology, but something only useful for protein folding and other supercomputer stuff. But these days, I am starting to think that maybe it could be even much more of an empty hype than I ever imaged yet.

it's funny, just now I asked an AI agent how to do something, that got me to look at the right place in the manual that showed it was on the right track and worked with my version of the library but I had to change it just a bit... I find the library often counterintuitive and think the manual is poorly written and I coulda spent an hour to find the right answer or otherwise would have thought up a bad answer...
... but there is a self-psychology angle, I've seen people go through all the stages of seduction with agents, they're frickin' falling in love with the thing without realizing it and thinking about as straight as somebody with a hard crush

In terms of coding I find it helpful in very constrained ways, where I specify pretty clearly how the output should be implemented but I don't know (or can't be bothered to look up) the syntax / idioms in a particular language.
I had a similar experience with chatGPT. It just sort of played along with whatever I was interested in. Tickled my fancy? It took my own personal reflection upon the words and conversation (just like it would with a real human) to realize the BS for what it was. Not worth my time.

ich glaube, da irrt er sich (wobei ich natürlich nicht genau weiß, was er mit politischem unwissen mein und wie sich das von normalem unwissen unterscheidet), politiker und co, parteien und verwaltung, wirtschaft und industrie, alle wissen alles. das wissen um den klimawandel haben alle, genau so wie das wissen um die nötigen lösungen dazu. nur leute wie merz, lindner, linnemann, spahn, dobrindt, söder, klingbeil ignorieren es. sie wissen alles und ignorieren das, weil es ihnen egal ist. ihre jetzigen vorteile sind wichtiger als die vorteile der menscheit in 100 jahren. diese leute sind wirklich bösen willens!

Tochter aus Prag zurück. Auf der Hinfahrt war es "Europa", sie sind eingereist mit dem Flixbus, keine Kontrolle, nichts. Auf dem Rückweg hat Dobrindts (und #CxU, #grAFD) Vorstellung von einem vereinten Europa die Einreise um 30 Minuten verzögert, weil eine Mitschülerin nur einen abgelaufenen deutschen Perso, aber einen gültigen ukrainischen Reisepass dabei hatte, und die einzige Schülerin mit Politik Patches an der Kleidung, wurde nach Drogen befragt. Das ist dieses vor bösen Menschen schützen!
Also um dieses Land vor bösen Menschen zu schützen hätte ich andere Ideen. Beispielsweise ein Verbot der Nazi-Partei und das Entfernen eines selbstherrlichen Innenministers aus dem Amt.
Ich bin übrigens sehr stolz auf unser Kind und ihre FreundInnen, die komplett verstehen was ein faschistischen, totalitäres, populistisches Verhalten hier von der derzeitigen Politik an den Tag gelegt wird. Wir können alle nur hoffen, dass sie das in der Sozialisation über die nächsten Jahrzehnte beibehalten.

Leider nicht neu der ganze Schmarrn an der Grenze zu Bayern(!). Wir waren 2018 mit dem Flixbus in Ljubljana. Auf der Hinfahrt eine halbe Stunde Pause mitten in den österreichischen Alpen. Auf der Rückfahrt kurz hinter Grenze bei Freilassing eine halbe Stunde Passkontrolle vom Bus in einer der immer dafür verwendeten Hallen.
@echopapa Eben. Hab ich vorhin gerade auch erwähnt. Und ich trage keine politischen Patches und wurde kontrolliert und gefragt, ob ich Etwas in höheren Mengen als erlaubt mit nach Deutschland nehme. Ist wie gesagt eine ganze Zeit so. Nicht immer, aber oft genug. @holger
meiner Erfahrung nach wurden Filxbusse leider schon vor der aktuellen Verschärfung fast immer kontrolliert beim Grenzübergang Tschechien -> Deutschland. Wir mussten damals ähnlich lange warten, weil eine Freundin von mir den Pass und den Aufenthaltstitel vergessen hatte (auf dem Hinfahrt wurde nicht kontrolliert). Ob die deutsche Gesundheitskarte heute noch ausreichen würde, um am Ende doch einreisen zu dürfen, bezweifle ich aber.
@don Es ist aber so, dass man ohne Aufpasser auch nicht klarkommt. Beispiel: Autobahntoilette mit und ohne Personal. Bei letzterer vergessen plötzlich viele ihre Kinderstube.

Ging vor 2024 für EU und Schweiz und miteingebürgerte Kinder. Die mussten sich dann mit 21 entscheiden (Optionspflicht). Gibt natürlich auch Staaten, deren Staatsangehörigkeit man nicht ablegen kann (Afg, Syrien, ...)
Ich kann es nur sehr schwer begründen, warum ich diese Info weiterreichen möchte. Aber ich denke, dass die vielen negativen Phantasien in Bezug auf Migranten eine Projektion von eigenem ist. Jane Aliot hat 1968 ein wunderbares Experiment gemacht. Es nannte sich BLUE EYES / BROWN EYES. Dieses Experiment zu wiederholen in Schulen oder Erwachsenenbildung/bei Politikern könnte vielleicht zum Umdenken bringen.

Ich glaube, da kommt es auf den Kontext an. So wie ich das wahrgenommen habe, wurde das rein im Sinne der Kontrolle gefragt und weder geurteilt noch diskriminiert. Ob das okay ist, oder nicht kann jeder für sich selber beurteilen. Aber so wie du das geschildert hast sehe ich da nichts worüber man sich empören müsste.

Wie du schon selber sagtest, Kontrollen an Grenzen und dem Grenzgebiet, auch Im Schengen-Raum, gab und wird es immer 'AFAIR' geben. Der Unterschied liegt in der Intension und der zugrundeliegenden Prämisse dieser.
Bei mir mit 55 reicht schon der schwarze Hoodie und selbst bedruckte Shirts, um in der ersten Klasse trotz Self-Checkin nach der Fahrkarte gefragt zu werden, oder von der Bundespolizei nach meinen Zielen ausgehorcht zu werden.
ich finde die Aufregung etwas befremdlich. Sie hat keinen gültigen Personalausweis und die Ukraine gehört nur mal nicht zur EU. Natürlich muss da genauer hingeschaut werden. Das ist der Job der Bundespolizei. Im Grunde genommen selbst schuld, dass sich die Einreise verzögert hat.
Und ob die Mitschülerin alleine wegen den Patches angesprochen wurde, weiß keiner von uns. Vielleicht gab es noch andere Anzeichen (Pupillen, nervöses Verhalten...)
Ich möchte nicht sagen, dass Deine Tochter unrecht hat, aber es ist ihr subjektiver Eindruck. Und den so aufzubauschen, finde ich nicht richtig. Es gibt immer zwei Seiten der Medaillen. Aber irgendwie ist diese Art und Weise auf Mastodon mode. Man ist in seiner Wohlfühlblase.
@feda gut, dass du das so genau weißt. Ein abgelaufener Personalausweis wäre bei mir altem weißen Mann völlig egal gewesen (weiß ich, weil es schon so war) den Reisepass hat sie ja nur vorgelegt, weil sie was Gültiges hatte. Das hat gar nichts mit einer Blase zu tun.

Und nur weil die Beamten in einer Situation anders handeln, heißt es nicht, dass die Beamten in der Situation falsch gehandelt haben. Ukrainer haben nur mal andere Einreisevoraussetzungen und dann muss man VIELLEICHT genauer hinschauen, was Fakt ist. Schlussendlich durfte ja alle weiterfahren nach der Überprüfung.

Ein anderer Autor hat ihm dazu empfohlen, zu Threads zu gehen, da würde genau das funktionieren, was er also Autor so braucht.
Da er aber nicht zu einer Meta-Plattform wollte, hat er das Fediverse dazu aufgerufen, seine Plattform zu werden.
Ich denke, dass das so nicht funktionieren kann, denn im Sinne der Plattformökonomie der großen Konzerne, ist das Fediverse keine Plattform und wird es auch niemals werden.
Bei Instagram, TikTok, ... kann man den Erfolg eines Accounts mit Geld beeinflussen, was auch im Sinne des Betreibers der Plattform ist, da er insbesondere mit Aufmerksamkeit sein Geld verdient. Ziel ist dabei, die Menschen so lange wie möglich auf der Plattform zu halten, damit man ihre Aufmerksamkeit zu "sehr viel" Geld machen kann.
Diese Art der Manipulation ist im Fediverse, von seiner Grundkonstruktion her nicht vorgesehen und deshalb nach

Da er aber nicht zu einer Meta-Plattform wollte, hat er das Fediverse dazu aufgerufen, seine Plattform zu werden.
Ich denke, dass das so nicht funktionieren kann, denn im Sinne der Plattformökonomie der großen Konzerne, ist das Fediverse keine Plattform und wird es auch niemals werden.
Bei Instagram, TikTok, ... kann man den Erfolg eines Accounts mit Geld beeinflussen, was auch im Sinne des Betreibers der Plattform ist, da er insbesondere mit Aufmerksamkeit sein Geld verdient. Ziel ist dabei, die Menschen so lange wie möglich auf der Plattform zu halten, damit man ihre Aufmerksamkeit zu "sehr viel" Geld machen kann.
Diese Art der Manipulation ist im Fediverse, von seiner Grundkonstruktion her nicht vorgesehen und deshalb nach meiner Wahrnehmung auch nicht zu etablieren, weil die Benutzer*innen genau deshalb im Fediverse sind, weil sie diese Art der Manipulation ablehnen.
Wie seht ihr das, hat das Fediverse das Potenzial auch kommerziell relevant zu werden, oder ist der Widerspruch einfach zu groß?
Ich denke mal es könnte funktionieren, wenn Accounts bereits eine größere "Fanbase" mitbringen, die idealerweise auch mit den Besonderheiten des Fediverses (teilen statt nur liken) vertraut ist. Das ist dann wie der bekannte Buschfunk, über den erstaunlich viele Unternehmen auch ohne großen Werbeetat funktionieren. Nützlicher Nebeneffekt - wenn mal wirklich ein paar große Namen auf die Präsens in Bluesky, Meta, etc. verzichten und hierherkommen, wäre das eine Initialszündung fürs Fediverse.
Ich denke, dass das Fediverse relevant werden kann, allerdings die großen Plattformen nicht ersetzen. Es wird sich maximal als dauerhafter Nebenakteur etablieren. So wie es heute immer noch E-Mail-Newsletter gibt neben den Meta-Plattformen.
Ich glaube, viele "Männer" können (aus versch. Gründen) nicht zugeben, dass sie sich weder für Autos, noch für Fußball interessieren, ihnen Bier nicht schmeckt oder weinen manchmal ziemlich gut tut.
Ich mache mal den Anfang:
- Autos sind langweilig und interessieren mich nicht - Ich bin kein Handwerker, ich brauche keine Heimwerkstatt und kein lautes, großes Werkzeug - Ich weine bei Filmen, und manchmal auch einfach so. - Ich tanze gerne. Ich koche gern und meistens. - Ich bin ein Mensch.
- Ich bin Ingenieur, so ein gewisses professionelles Interesse an Autos habe ich schon auch wenn ich persönlich einen klapprigen alten Kleinstwagen fahre weil ich mehr nicht brauche. - Ich mag Bier so sehr, dass ich es selbst braue. Mit Supermarktpils braucht mir aber niemand zu kommen. Gebt mir nach Tropenfrucht schmeckende Craft IPAs und belgische Starkbiere mit ihren Nelken- und Bananennoten. - Frauenfußball gucke ich ganz gern. Weniger übertriebenes Geheule nach Fouls, weniger toxisch maskuline "Fankultur". - Ich koche auch gern. Wahrscheinlich aus dem gleichen Grund, warum ich Bier braue: Ich erforsche gern spannende Geschmackswelten. - Klar weine ich. Was raus muss muss raus. - Ich komme super mit Männern aus, die keinen Bock auf Autos, Fußball oder Bier haben. Die haben nämlich dafür andere Interessen die mindestens genau so spannend sind.

@helix In Belgien nimmt man für die Gärung hauptsächlich obergärige Hefestämme, die als Gärnebenprodukte Ester (Banane) und Phenole (Nelke) ausscheiden. Will man nicht in seinem kühlen Pils aber in einem schönen belgischen Blond ist das ganz wunderbar.
In Weizenbier übrigens auch, genau gleicher Wirkmechanismus.
Äh, falsch formuliert. Ich frage mich, ob die Gärnebenprodukte ungesund sind. Dass Alkohol ungesund ist, ist mir klar, aber ich denke ein alkoholfreies IPA wird nicht ungesünder sein als anderes Bier mit anderen Nebenprodukten? Noch eine Frage, sorry falls ich nerve: kann man beim Selbstbrauen auch alkoholfreies Bier herstellen? Ist auch OK wenn du sagst ich soll lieber googlen 😅

Ich wüsste von keinen ungesunden Nebeneffekten. Isoamylacetat ist ja auch in Bananen enthalten und wie auch immer die Phenolverbindung heißt auch in Nelken. Wenn es welche gäbe, wäre Weißbier auch betroffen.
Und alkfreies Bier im Heimbraubereich ist nicht praktikabel. Die Hefen werden nicht auf Heimbrauerlevel verkauft weil bei schwach vergorener Zuckersuppe das Infektionsrisiko mit säureproduzierenden Bakterien zu hoch ist. Auf industriellem Maßstab kriegst du das mit Flaschenpasteurisierung in den Griff oder hast Prozesse, die den Alkohol aus dem Bier rausfiltern können aber beides geht auf Heimbrauerlevel nicht so einfach.
Ich erkunde aber gerade die Welt der Biere um 4% und habe eine Menge Spaß, ohne gleich betrunken zu werden.
Bis auf Fußball, den ich auch mit 62 immer noch selber spiele, schließe ich mich allem an. Habe kein Auto, außer einmal wöchentlich Cambio, liebe Radfahren, breche mir die Daumen beim Nagel einschlagen, Kochen ist mein Job, also, mache ich gern, Alkohol brauche ich dito nicht und heule am liebsten bei „ ist das Leben nicht schön“, den ich immer Weihnachten schaue!

Vielleicht wäre es einmal eine Maßnahme, die Menschen, die den Einsatz derartiger Dinge bewilligen, komplett zu entblößen. Das heißt sämtliche persönlichen Daten öffentlich stellen. Würde mich interessieren, ob sie dann den Datenschutz weiterhin mit den Füßen treten oder nicht.
Das war schon lange vor Corona eine Dreckschleuder. Ist aber lange regelmäßig bei Schulen aufgetaucht (immer noch?), die als so ganz besonders schülerzentriert galten, Preise gewonnen haben usw. Mit arsNova (arsnova.click/) gibt es eine ganz okaye und datenschutzkonforme Alternative, mit dern ich Studierende und Lehrkräfte von kahoot und Konsorten wegzulotsen versuche. I'm hoping for a better alternative to TrackerControl since it's buggy (legit connections hang often) and makes that I can't ever use a VPN under any circumstance, but I'm at a loss for other options
You do not need app accessible root access to filter DNS requests or network traffic beyond that. However, you are not going to provide any substantial form of privacy through using block lists enumerating badness. Those can only block looking up DNS names which are solely used for unwanted things and not useful things. Services combining those together prevents this being done since you aren't going to be using apps if you're blocking the services they use. The approach does not work.
Many apps do hard-wire IP addresses as a fallback such as certain Facebook apps. It may also be the primary way they connect. They can hard-wire DNS-over-HTTPS IPs and use their own DNS resolution for everything else.E ven if this wasn't the case, you're not going to be using apps if you've blocked the services they need to function. Unless the apps don't depend on any non-user-selected services, what will be accomplished? They can and do connect to third parties from their servers.
Many people wrongly believe they can prevent sharing with third parties through filtering on the client side. That won't work if you're letting them connect to anything else, especially their own services directly.
There are also many apps using DNS itself as a 2-way communication system. DNS resolution itself allows communicating to the nameservers for a service through your DNS resolver server. It's a full blown 2 way communication system. Can include a random value to bypass caching.
You can use RethinkDNS on GrapheneOS for filtering DNS in combination with using a WIreGuard VPN or multiple chained WireGuard VPNs. However, just be aware that the privacy benefits from filtering DNS or IP-based filtering are limited. You're limited to blocking things not required for apps to function, i.e. you cannot block the core privacy invasive behavior of apps and how they share with third parties from their services including long after the fact based on the data they gathered.
If you want privacy, you need to focus on what you share with apps and services, not which IP addresses or DNS names can be used. That isn't going to provide real privacy protection, it's just a best effort way to eliminate some things which are easy to cut out without losing functionality. The idea that it provides substantial/fundamental privacy protections is wrong. Features like our Contact Scopes, Storage Scopes, Sensors toggle and standard Android privacy features are what you need.
@GrapheneOS Thanks for the replies! I am aware that, if I let e.g. the train company talk to their train servers, they can indeed send anything over that connection and then proxy it to whoever. Beyond permission limits/scopes, blocking IP traffic to trackers is all I can really do though, so that's what I've been doing. (I can't reasonably forego a few specific apps as mentioned in the first message of the thread)
@GrapheneOS [2/2] if my device pings the server from various IP addresses (e.g. my parents' WiFi, then back home at a similar time as my partner's device, etc.), this metadata reveals exactly where I sit in the social graph and where in the world I go
Thinking about this, maybe I should accept that it pings the mothership but I could force those apps to only ever use a VPN so that they never see a second IP address

Using an always-on VPN makes a lot of sense for privacy. Mullvad and Proton are both good choices with open source apps. Both are supportive of our work. You should use Contact Scopes and Storage Scopes whenever possible and we have more features in the same style coming after Android 16 for Location (better than the existing Mock Location), Camera, Microphone and other permissions.
You can also use multiple profiles. We plan to further improve Private Space and enabling multiple per user.

For the "other accessibility features" part, and often forgotten: Low motion mode.
Nothing should move unless part of a core feature (e.g. if I play a video that video is allowed to move, starting automatically is not allowed; in a game NPCs/enemies are probably supposed to move on their own), or explicitly requested by the user (e.g. a notification appearing is motion, but if the user enables notifications that's okay, but it shouldn't slide/wobble/…). Animated GIFs and similar are poison.

in reply to Random Weirdo • • •@Tooden I think it may help to distinguish between clinical terms and terms that are used more broadly in every day language. Autism can be used both ways, but a lot of the time it's used in relation to the traits defined in the DSM5 - you can be officially diagnosed as autistic by a qualified psychiatrist.
You can also use "autistic" to mean whatever you mean when you self realise as autistic, or to be an insult, etc. So autistic has both a formal, clinical meaning, and a more general meaning.
Gifted, on the other hand, is not a clinical term. You can't be diagnosed as gifted as there is no generally accepted official definition or official list of traits. It's like "neurodivergent" - we all use it to mean different things.

Why do we need these distinctions and why do some of us cling to them?
Imo, we use them to shield ourselves from harm (i.e. Ableism). It is the primary function in capitalism to optimize the workforce. "Disable" those who are different. Make them less likely to reproduce.

Gifted classes are obvious, from my perspective. Of course the smart people need to be especially supported. They will advance the workforce, yada yada.
In an equal society, you dont need different classes. You dont even have different schools. Kids just chose what they are interested in. No need for equal education between all. We have books for this, yet.

Sometimes a child (adults too) will become interested in something because of a teacher. (I majored in history because of my first year history lecturer.) Conversely, a poor teacher (or one having to teach outside of their area of expertise) might fail to engage students.
And a lot of students won’t know if they’re interested in something if they’ve never had proper access to that field of learning. If we had enough skilled teachers working in all areas, students would have great opportunities to discover what interests them and what they’re good at.

Went to a couple of meetings and didn't get the impression of any kind of elitism. Just seemed like people that wanted to share special interests that others didn't (there were dozens of sub-groups called "Special Interest Groups" or SIGs). I even remember an article in their magazine entitled "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" The basic thesis was that our priorities were different. Looking back, I wonder if it might have been related to neurodivergence ("gifted", etc.) before we really understood it. I think it's too bad that I didn't do more with it to get a better impression. It's also possible that it is different now than it was then.

I qualified, but I have a hard time calling myself any of the names, I mean, I'm no savant at anything, unless my whole philosophy thing is true, and if it mattered.

I suck at math, I'm no nuts and bolts any sort of science person, hard science intimidates and soft science - again, I'm trying to write my own, if I'm thinking at a high level there, no-one else seems to think so. Music, I have the opposite of talent, took a lifetime to play this slowly and sing this badly . . . I think of my theories as the only thing I have to offer, but I can't dazzle anyone with them, it's all high level stuff, not detail science and if it's good, I think I'm a good generalist, I try to uncompartmentalize, audit things with everything else, but I'm pretty sure nothing about me screams, "gifted."

Having said all that, my theories do add up to that most of humanity is . . . delayed. I suppose that's the same thing, in negative?

Lete me back up. At the time I didn't know what was going on. Adults I didn't know took me out of class and led me to a part of the school off limits to kids. I was given a bunch of logic puzzles to solve.
I thought I was maybe being kidnapped. I thought if I played along and stalled for time I could figure out how to escape or maybe someone would come rescue me.
I was six. I was given no explanation. I didn't know these people.
I passed the tests and got into the advanced program. My mother told me my IQ. These things she bragged about often.
BUT. It was also an assessment for special ed. What Mom didn't tell me until I was 50 was that I was also diagnosed as autistic.
That I didn't learn until my own kid was diagnosed and I told her.

Curiously, after that, the school basically left me alone and let me do whatever I wanted, so long as I completed the requisites. I had no guidance and almost didn't graduate.

Lots have suggested that “later” identified NDs have nearly all been through trauma related to being ND as well. It’s a bit of a mess to pick apart, all entangled.
Although, my life path never gave me suggestions I was gifted. Have since, in my late 30s, seen a glimpse that I might be since life finally settled down a bit, but it’s too late for me to take it on board as that. And I’m definitely ok with that! I wouldn’t know what to do with it and would hate the attention. Much rather blend in.

Exploring joy is probably more revealing to me as to whether I’m neurodivergent. I find my joy in unusual places, usually in situations NT wouldn’t notice anything unusual at all. The same goes for exploring which environments I genuinely thrive in. This has been amplified since I got ME/CFS because I don’t have the spoons to hide struggles anywhere near as much, even from myself. My high academic grades only came out when I told my uni I’m autistic and started living a lifestyle at home that better supports me as autistic. I could not be more against IQ testing. Loaded with bias, particularly discriminating against non-white folk. I cannot take IQ test results seriously.
I respect your decision to “have your daughter tested” - you will have had your reasons, yet I hope she was able to be fully informed and have a choice in the matter too.
All I want for me is to find a way to live a sustainable life (i.e. no burnout, cycles of ill health) that brings peace, and hopefully happiness and joy too. I don’t need to know my level of intelligence according to someone else’s test do that. My “proof of achievement” will be if I succeed in crafting such a life. Only I can be the judge of that.

Her description of what and how she perceived was so like how I perceive, not physically exactly, but my consciousness. How I saw and understood the world, processed info.

Even for left-handers (not punished), there is a division of labor between the two hands. I worked out that, for me, tasks demanding precision and control ususally get relegated to the left hand and arm, and the right performs those demanding strength. My right arm was literally stronger than my left.
Perversely, I use a mouse right-handed, which breaks my theory.

I don't have early childhood trauma, and my differences were notable then.
I process information in a non-typical way (strong visual, weak auditory recall, attention to detail).
I like sameness and ritual.
It fits with autism. The "giftedness" is just a number, like my height, that I believe has near zero relevance for my way of being.

in reply to Jules • • •@quidcumque I agree. But the concept of giftedness involves more than a high IQ. I found it very interesting that on checklists there are a lot of things like "intense focus", "special interests", "questioning of authorities", "problems with peers", "feeling different" etc.
Gifted can also mean an ability to perform extraordinarily well in one specific area.

I'm vary of these checklists, actually, because these are very common things, both in "gifted" kids and those with average or below average IQ - and conversely, there are many "gifted" kids that are socially competent and defer to authority. These things are so non-specific they feel meaningless.

in reply to Random Weirdo • • •I kind of came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter to me. The needs for all of those symptoms are very similar (I am AuDHD with PTSD and Depression). The diagnoses just gave me a little bit more understanding of why I am how I am (and in the case of AuDHD some medical/legal advantages).
I had the PTSD and depression diagnoses before I got the AuDHD diagnose. And I'm not really doing anything different now, I'm just focusing on all the stuff I've learnt during my therapy sessions and adapt them a bit to my AuDHD.
I also suspect that I am gifted (the diagnosing AuDHD doctor gave a little hint). I haven't tested and it's not really important for me to know. Might go down that rabbithole some day, but it doesn't really matter to me regarding how to take care of myself.

I agree that nearly all autistic people have been bullied at some point. But they aren't automatically traumatized. If they have an otherwise healthy, stable and supportive environment, they can be fine. This is not to minimize bullying. Any bullying is bad and will cause harm. This is just to emphasize the fact that people can experience similar things, but won't be affected similarly. Early childhood trauma can cause similar symptoms as autism.

On the other hand, the random social punishment for thinking while autistic led to me feeling like nothing was real. That's still dissociation, but a very different kind. I feel it's what gave me my self-worth challenges as well.

Trauma will bend the picture to an extent. That said, an individual will rarely be average, results fluctuate, subjectivity remains, and thresholds/scales are arbitrary.
I suspect you'd need to treat the trauma to search for a baseline. My take is to look at options for the differential Dx and take ideas that make sense to you

We can appreciate and value everyone just because they are their own unique self, whatever that is.
We can also focus a career on things an individual is good at. Develop great ability in selected areas. I suggest this from both an internal and external perspective: developing ones self and encouraging others (but not where it is unwanted).
I don't see those things being at odds with each other. Current societal systems may currently be greatly diminishing the former and putting undue pressure on the latter.

For context, I'm autistic and I also have self-diagnosed cPTSD.
Both conditions can cause numbing, but I've learnt to distinguish between them. When it's caused by cPTSD, there are strong elements of self-loathing, inadequacy and uselessness that are absent when I'm suffering from #ActuallyAutistic sensory overload. With sensory overload, it's more likely that I'll either try to shut out the stimuli (perhaps using alcohol) or have a strong urge to escape.
And there's another difference: I've confronted most of my cPTSD demons head-on and beaten them. It was raw and painful and, for all I know, dangerous. Please don't do what I did — please seek professional help. But the fact that I've exorcised the trauma of being in certain places but can't fix the numbing effect of being in other places (beaches, discos, certain shops) tells me that I'm dealing with two different phenomena.

Thank you for sharing. And it's so good that you have overcome (most of?) your trauma.
I'm also doing trauma therapy at the moment which has been, so far, extremely helpful. It helps to distinguish trauma responses and sensory overwhelm. Burnout is still one more contributing factors that muddies the waters.

I didn't know that dissociation and hypervigilance were associated with #autism, but five minutes with a search engine shows that you're right.
The articles I read just now suggested that autistic hypervigilance was caused by sensory overstimulation. In that case, I guess one could tell whether hypervigilance was caused by cPTSD or autism by comparing one's experience in various situations with differing levels of stimulation and differing levels of psychological safety.
I've said for decades that I live two seconds in the future. It makes me an alert driver but am intense conversationalist. 🙂 If I could turn it off, I don't think I would.

in reply to ND Dev • • •@nddev "Sensory trauma" isn't a mainstream concept in the autistic community yet, but it has a lot of currency for me. So hypervigilance from sensory overstimulation seems to me like just another way to have hypervigilance from trauma.
In hindsight, I certainly had more hypervigilance when my cPTSD was raging, but it was still just more of the same of what I already had.
After many, many years of anxiety medication I'm not hypervigilant anymore.

As another person said, accommodations should be seen as a universal support system for dignity and decency for all people, not “entitlements” offered to people with “special needs”.
Coming to trauma… I see it as a human universal too. People bond over trauma all the time. Literally every “nation” on the planet has an origin story based on shared generational trauma. What makes neurodivergent people different is that somehow their trauma isn’t readily recognized by neurotypical people (and vice versa), thus the bonding that’s supposed to happen just doesn’t. It was a thing in the Sixties here. I was judged gifted by teachers (and everyone) no later than the fourth grade. I didn't skip grades, but by eighth grade I'd been placed in the school's "gifted" program. I found it boring, however, and chose to opt out.
Every adult who encountered me from a young age knew they were in the presence of advanced intelligence. They couldn't see the balls and chains retarding it. I was literally gifted and retarded.

And I would usually find an appropriate time to tell them that they would probably exceed my understanding & skill in that area, if they hadn’t already done so.

in reply to Random Weirdo • • •I can tell you about my experience. I have three diagnoses (professional evaluations) that, over the years, seem to be the most accurate.
1) Bipolar syndrome in 2010. (After two years of random diagnoses, I'm not entirely sure about that.)
2) Giftedness or high intellectual ability in 2010. (I didn't accept it, nor did I fully accept it until 2022.)
3) Autism (grade 1-2) in 2022.
Since a crisis in 2008, when I myself requested hospitalization until 2022, I haven't been able to fully understand what was happening to me. Today, my condition is called "Twice Exceptional."
It's really very difficult to self-diagnose an overlap of things like that. One can suspect and even be almost certain, but it's better to go for a professional evaluation to confirm.
I sometimes had doubts about autism, and about bipolar disorder too, but not about high intelligence, although it was hard to believe because I've always thought I was crazy.
I still have a hard time accepting it, but what convinced me the most was a question from the therapist who evaluated me in 2022.
In short, it's not that easy.

in reply to Random Weirdo • • •My apparently unpopular opinion about "giftedness" is, that it can be considered its own category of neurodivergence, its own spectrum, but because most people are so primed by ableism, they have a reflexive aversion against the concept.
It's like "colorblindness"(broadly, not just applied to "race"), as if we could fight ableism by pretending that people don't have certain traits/abilities in one area and struggles associated with them.

in reply to hauch • • •Just like many people feel irritated or even attacked if someone mentions to be autistic or having ADHD, it's similar with "giftedness"(or allusions to it).
Many people seem to interpete it as a vague "I'm special/superior in some way/deserve special treatment/".
Even many people in ND communities do the equivalent of "aren't we all a little bit autistic/ADHD", or "why do you need to lable yourself, we're all different" with "giftedness".

in reply to hauch • • •Autism is still treated like an inherent disability in the medical model, despite in many cases actually only being a disability in the social model.
"Giftedness" is treated like the opposite of a disability in the medical model, but just like autism, it often is a disability in the social model, because just like autistic people, so called "gifted" people live in a world that isn't built for their needs and can therefore be less accessible to them.

in reply to hauch • • •Just like with autism, I see "giftedness" as still not that well researched and the "official diagnostics" still being very underdeveloped and "NT centric".
I see IQ-Tests like other diagnostic tests and I see people claiming to "have an IQ" in a similar way as people who are early in their autism self discovery journey telling others how high their AQ-Score is.
I also think "self-identifying" as "gifted"(or however you want to call it) is valid.

in reply to hauch • • •My impression is, that a huge part of struggling to differentiate here comes from the lack of easily accessible and quality controlled recources.
If you want to find out if you're autistic, being confronted with outdated informations and badly informed diagnosticians is probably the norm.
Being "diagnosed" as "gifted" seems to be even further behind, as if autism was diagnosed based on an AQ-Test or other diagnostic test alone.

I already know that I'm autistic, but what if a badly informed diagnostician with a vague idea of "there being an overlap" just thinks I'm just "gifted and weird"/traumatised (not a pure hypothetical, there are a lot of diagnostic "horror stories" out there)?

in reply to hauch • • •My impression is, that "the overlap" can in some cases be as superficial as they can be with autism and ADHD, where "problems with eye-contact" are very different, once you actually ask the person.
Finding it uncomfortable and distracting to look someone in the eyes and just drifting off are very different experiences and probably don't even look that similar, if you don't want to describe them in a single short bullet point.

For me feeling on edge because an experience is just challenging sensory wise, or because it's similar to a stressfull experience in the past feel very different, but from the experiences I've heard from people with alexithymia, I wouldn't be surprised if they struggle to differentiate here.

Of course there is an overlap between "communities", just like more and more autism realisations/diagnoses "pop up" in ADHD communities, but there are some "rifts" between individual people and sometimes groups, because they get along better with people "more similar to them".
For example some "gifted and ADHD"-people are "painfully allistic" to me.

in reply to hauch • • •For me this was also a good way to be sure that I'm autistic, not because there is a wide range of "normal" and a small range of "disordered" at the extremes, including "ASD", but because autistic and allistic can be seen as 2 different categories and I fit well in one of them and not the other, no matter what other "traits"/disorders/categories I might otherwise fit, that can or can seem to overlap.

Talked to friend recently. Hadn't seen her in a long time and told her about my trauma therapy. The beatings in childhood came up (my major reason for freeze and dissociation in situations of perceived danger) and she basically said that there wasn't much harm in spanking a child now and then (here in Germany spanking a child is prohibited by law). So yeah, people tend to block out the harm that is done.

Even if I was, it wouldn't help me in any way to get a "diagnosis". I do have my fair share of trauma, which I'm currently working on. This helps me to differentiate between trauma response due to triggering events (freeze, dissociation, shame) and merely overwhelming environments that'll drain me (shutdown, numbness).

There were times in school where I was considered "oppositional and lazy", other times where I was "gifted".
Asking the obvious questions and being persistent as a 7-year-old hyperactive kid was annoying and a sure sign of my bad upbringing (not literally, I am trying to convey a vibe here).
Asking the obvious questions and being persistent a few years later in a class for gifted kids was a sign of my intellect.
More in general: One could argue that OCD is "being in touch" and "respecting" patterns. Or "problematic" behavior (for whom?).
In a time where doctors didn't wash their hands before treating patients, Semmelweis was a pedantic germophobe who needed therapy.

Autism is from infancy, but schizoid is meant to start near adolescence. But my issues (mutism, strong food aversions, social cluelessness, imaginary worlds, obsessive interests) started at a very young age, 3 at the latest. There are autism traits, ADHD and schizophrenia in my family. I made a thread on it, I think on my old account. I'll try to find it.
