Really struggling to figure out the fediverse
It seems weird, like half the places don't let you like or upvote things, and the others all have their own weird challenges. Like on this site, I can search for stuff but can't comment on it, and when content is supplied from another site or instance, I have to go create an account on it just to interact with it. I'm confused what the logic was behind this, it seems like in order to use any part of the fediverse one has to create accounts on all other parts.
I want this to succeed more than anyone. I HATE corporations, I HATE the platforms they create and what they do to freedom of speech in them. Humanity MUST escape the shitholes corporations created for us, and the fediverse is the single greatest hope for this that I've ever seen. Just sad that even someone as gung ho as me is struggling to get it to work for them, but hopefully it's just a matter of time till we get this all dialed in and start taking over. Lemme know if you think of any tips or tricks.

@ClearCrow where more exactly you're unable to comment or like stuff? I never had any issue.
You do not have to create an account on that other instance to comment or interact in any way with that content. Just use the comment section (or like/dislike) from your instance, using your account, and the activity will just be sent to the remote instance.

Now that friendica.world seems (somewhat) stable, there's more to be done 😀
First, we need to setup a test instance so we can test big changes before deploying on the main instance.
Then, we need to move the media storage from the database to S3 (test it first..)
Also, we have configured some VMs which can take part of the Friendica instance so we can scale for better performance, but we need to cutover to that...
Enough to do still!
If there's anyone that would like to join the team and help out, let me know! Basically looking for IT enthousiasts. Some knowledge of Linux is required, knowledge of docker would be nice but can also be taught while doing.
Apart from the tasks mentioned above, we also manage the infra for about 15 other instances so there's always something to do. It's all on a volunteer basis.
We have a nice team going on, we communicate in Slack. DM me if you're interested!!!

My laptop broke yesterday afternoon. Just totally frozen. On reboot it didn't recognise half the hardware (no WiFi or mouse/track pad). Marvellous.
Now managed to make a fresh install of Linux Mint 22.1. All seems good except a screen brightness issue I can't seem to solve (it's stuck way too bright for my liking and can find no way to reduce it. No brightness slider anywhere). Might be a driver issue? Don't know how to fix that.

Issues like that can often be solved with a kernel parameter. Google your exact laptop brand + linux + screen brightness, in most cases you'll find a solution.
If it worked before, it's strange that it doesn't now though.
I think it was a case of interface and finding the appropriate control. Other responders have now pointed out in hardware and software where the appropriate control is.

Ich suche gerade nach einer #Linux-Distribution, um sie auf einem >10 Jahre alten Laptop zu installieren, wo sie Windows 10 ersetzen soll, damit er wieder „frisch“ wird.
Der Laptop soll dann von meiner Mutter gelegentlich für Office-Dinge genutzt werden. (Und sie hat wenig Lust, sich groß umzugewöhnen)
WARUM gibt es bitte so viel Auswahl an Distros!? Wie soll ich possibly wählen!?

I’ve let my MS Office expire which means I’m hunting about for a new #email client for my PC. I need one that can handle multiple emails and isn’t run by robber barons. It also needs to work with overwhelmed brains (neurodivergent friendly) Any suggestions?

Trump bereitet rhetorisch die Gleichschaltung der US-Medien vor, fürchte ich. In einer Rede im Justizministerium hat er explizit Medien wie CNN benannt und gesagt, diese Medien seien "corrupt, illegal". Die Unterstellung von Illegalität wiederholt Trump mehrfach. Sie würden nicht positiv über ihn berichten trotz seines Wahlerfolgs. "It has to stop."
Schon seit seiner ersten Amtszeit nennt Trump Medien immer wieder "enemies of the people".
Ob es leere Drohungen bleiben, wird sich zeigen.

Today, I realized another risk of AI that I hadn't considered before, namely as a Dunning-Kruger amplifier.
At the institute, I regularly have contact with people (*) who think they have refuted the theory of relativity or solved other big physical problems.
Usually, these “solutions” are simply meaningless sentences that sound like physics, but are not physics.

Often they have become so bogged down in their pseudo theories that it is almost impossible to have a meaningful discussion with them.
Sometimes you can try and present a well-reasoned objection. Whether the other side will get it, is a different question.
Recently, I had the case that the person had “discussed” their theory with an AI / LLM beforehand and, due to “praise” from the language model, was convinced that they *could not be wrong*.

My objection that the central definition underlyinig the “theory” is not physical and ambiguous was completely ignored.
Worse still: because I was perceived to be too “stupid” has led the person to conclude that they will only discuss this with AIs in the future because “it obviously doesn't make sense (anymore) to discuss it with physicists.”
That's probably a problem.

After all, what could possibly go wrong when non-physicists pour their “physics buzzword bingo” with questions that sound like physics (but are not) into an LLM that ultimately doesn't understand physics either?
If the LLM then says, among other things, “it does seem almost too logical and elegant to be completely wrong”, this is of course problematic. Especially if the person at that point decides not to listen to any experts at all…

To be fair, though, I must add that the LLM even mentioned the usual caveats here. But these may not have been understood by the person:
“requires rigorous mathematical formulation and testing - currently speculative without such validation”
“a tall order needing extensive proof”
“a hypothesis awaiting the hard test of evidence”

danke für den Thread. Hab ihn gestern gelesen, heute schickt ein Podcasthörer einen Themenvorschlag, der „ihm mit perplexity“ aufbereitet wurde. Seufz.
Es geht um „Universe may exist in Black Hole“. Muss noch herausfinden, ob das irgendeine Grundlage hat.
Aber auf manche Abseitigkeiten muss man ja nicht eingehen. Auch manchen Artikeln eines gewissen Harvard-Astrophysiker muss man ja keine Bedeutung durch Verbreitung bringen. Bringt niemandem Erkenntnisgewinn.

Jemand Erfahrung mit #eOS Flash auf einem #Samsung A52s 5G?
Mir scheint die Doku veraltet und ich scheitere schon beim finden der vbmeta.img Datei, da es sie nicht mehr zu geben scheint. Zudem wird eine Installation mit #Odin vorgeschlagen. Die Samsung Software heißt meines Wissens aber mittlerweile Heimdall. Funktioniert der Flash damit dennoch?
Dachte ich frag mal nach Hilfe, bevor ich das Smartphone zum Briefbeschwerer mache.
