A Matter of Neurodiversity Within Therapy
Most of us have heard about Neurodiversity, it continues to be a hotly debated topic; but what is it, why do I care, and why would you?
Neurodiversity refers to the idea that neurological differences are natural variations in human brain functioning. This concept emphasizes diversity in cognitive experience and acknowledges that there is no single correct way for our brains to operate. It includes conditions such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia.
As one who is neurodivergent, I have come to understand some of my own personal challenges to navigating life as an individual on the spectrum. Besides, whilst there exists a general set of known or ‘common’ traits, being neurodiverse still remains a very unique experience. My reason for sharing a bit about what it means for me, is to, as a therapeutic counsellor, add my story, to help dispel the shame and societal stigma, as well as give other neurodiverse individuals who might be looking for therapy, the confidence to take that step, knowing that you are not alone.

Through lived experience, educational struggles, and other situations traversed with limited support, it was finally revealed that it has been a lifelong misdiagnosed companion of mine, only confirmed in the last several years. This knowledge has helped me to be more forgiving for what has appeared to be my perceived failings in the exemplified neurotypical ways of being.
A significant aspect however is that in being my whole self professionally, I can be supportive of you in your self-discovery, which will bring you to the answers and actions that benefit your highest way of being at your pace. After all, what is actionable for you, maybe very different for someone else.
As you read through these words, I am relatively sure you have also looked at the image that goes along with this post. Do you observe some of your traits within it? Or perhaps there are facets of yourself that are not present, but you recognise as a trait.
