Surf's Up!

I have developed a real fondness for California Harbor Seals. As noted in prior posts of mine, they are permanent residents here in Monterey Bay and tend to be a very laid-back and photogenic group. There's almost always an opportunity to catch a fun image of them, such as this one resting in the surf at the Hopkins Marine Station Beach Rookery:

California Harbor Seals - November 30th 2024:

Everyone around here loves the Sea Lions, probably because they are rowdy, noisy, and somewhat seasonal in their visits.

But I'm kind of partial to our year-round residents, the California Harbor Seal. Smaller, quieter, and generally pretty mellow, the females typically breed in May/June in these parts and pup in March/April

Came across this group over the Thanksgiving Weekend, some of whom appear to be very pregnant indeed, keeping their distance from the Sea Lion Riot going on about a 1/4 mile away, chilling, and likely wishing it was March already.

@douglasvb It is indeed. I imagine they are getting ready to Pup in the next few days. Plan on swinging by the sanctuary this weekend to see...

@NoRomBasic oh I'll have to check it out, too! It's always fun to watch the new babies on the Hopkins beach.
