Late Night at Government Plaza:
During much of 2014 and 2015, I would find myself walking around downtown Minneapolis after dark. I loved the feel and the look of the city during that time as it was less crowded and less frantic, especially during the weeknights.
One of the areas where things got really quiet was Goverment Plaza. It was during one of those evenings I took this shot of a young girl sitting in the archway of the Municipal Building just as a Green Line train pulled up to a halt:
In looking at this in post, cropping this very tightly around the train and building arches really brought out the motion of the train coming to a halt, and even though this was a pretty long exposure, the young girl held still enough that she remained in focus.
Photo taken in June of 2015 with a Sony RX100 Camera.

Remains of a Cypress:
Like many photographers, I am fascinated by Black and White imagery. Removing all color from a person, a scene, or an item both strips it of a certain sense of vibrancy, while simultaneously emphasizing features and contrasts that weren’t visible when viewed in a full-spectrum.
But doing it well is hard as not everything works in a monochrome world.
This one I feel does:
Taken on the same afternoon as the previous two posts, while there were no real image goels for the day, at some level I was in a bit of a contemplative mood. This remains of this Monterey Cypress Tree hit all the right feels for that, with the twisted trunk creating a nice mix of highlights and shadows then tend to pop when the color dissapears. This and the Santa Rosalia image from the same day are both some of my favorite recent pics.

Santa Rosalia Keeping Watch:
One of the many statues that can be found around Monterey is the one of Santa Rosalia overlooking the harbor. I've tried to photograph her several times in the 3 years Evelia and I have lived in this wonderful place and, because she is overlooking the harbor itself (protecting the Fisherman), the right perspective never really seemed to present itself to me.
Over the winter I had to chance to descend the steps to the beach at Shoreline Park (as the Sea Lions had finally vacated the area, apparently deciding Sister City Park was a better hang-out) and I noticed that I could see her looking towards the bay, framed by the Monterey Cypresses growing around her.
I batted about whether this looked better in Color or Black and White, but in this case I just slightly preferred the vintage look that B&W was giving me.

I may have had a moment of weakness today. Personally, I blame the Ken Rockwell review...
More news in late March or early April...
Surf's Up!
I have developed a real fondness for California Harbor Seals. As noted in prior posts of mine, they are permanent residents here in Monterey Bay and tend to be a very laid-back and photogenic group. There's almost always an opportunity to catch a fun image of them, such as this one resting in the surf at the Hopkins Marine Station Beach Rookery:

Walking Among The Giants - Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park:
This past New Year’s Eve was an opportunity to spend a day at the Roaring Camp and the adjacent Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. While Evelia and I did get to ride on the Steam Rail Tour (pulled by the Dixiana Shay) which is a must-do if you love Rail (and especially Steam Rail), we also never pass up the opportunity to walk among the California Redwoods at Henry Cowell:
While I have yet to see a “bad” day there, this "Day Before the New Year" was particularly beautiful as the grounds, which were wet and cold from the recent rains, were rapidly being heated by the warmth and the sun, causing an almost magical world of rolling mists and streaks of sunlight among the giants:

Shark Fin Cove:
One of the lesser-known spots along the Pacific Coast Highway between Santa Cruz and Davenport is Shark Fin Cove. While open to the public (8am to Sunset) getting to this largely-unmarked beach means parking at a small shoulder-pull-off just south of Davenport, hiking across the abandoned Southern Pacific Railroad tracks and then climbing down a steep-ish makeshift trail to the beach.
Once there, it isn’t hard to figure out how the Cove got its name, since it is dominated by a large Fin-shaped rock. Other little surprises once you get to the beach are a small underground stream that exits from the north cliffside into the ocean, and a rock-tunnel to the water’s edge on the south.
It takes a little effort, but if you have the time and are OK with climbing a bit, it is well-worth the stop:

California Harbor Seals - November 30th 2024:
Everyone around here loves the Sea Lions, probably because they are rowdy, noisy, and somewhat seasonal in their visits.
But I'm kind of partial to our year-round residents, the California Harbor Seal. Smaller, quieter, and generally pretty mellow, the females typically breed in May/June in these parts and pup in March/April
Came across this group over the Thanksgiving Weekend, some of whom appear to be very pregnant indeed, keeping their distance from the Sea Lion Riot going on about a 1/4 mile away, chilling, and likely wishing it was March already.

Gotham on a Cold Winter's Night:
{Blast from the past post}
Evelia and I lived in the Soo Line Building from 2013 through 2016. Downtown Minneapolis living was actually a wonderful experience and it still remains one of our favorite times and favorite places to have been.
With that said, Minneapolis winters are in a class by themselves.
This image for example, taken on January 11th 2014, the nightime temp was was fairly comparable to the Dark Side of The Moon. But when it does get that cold, things take on an almost surreal clarity. This night was no different.
Even so, I spent as little time on the open rooftop of the Soo Line as possible and seriously... it was ^%$%$% cold.

Pawprints In The Sand:
Evelia and I moved to Monterey Bay on New Year's Eve of 2021, so like many newbies arriving in a strange new land, we did a lot of little weekend trips the first month, often bringing our Bully, Rose, along for the jaunt.
One of those trips was to Fort Ord Dunes State Park, which is just a short walk away from our current digs. Being her very 1st experience with an ocean, Rose was quite excited, trotting out ahead of us to investigate the water and waves...
While she was less enthused upon finding that the ocean is well... wet... the image of her heading boldy across the umarked sand to the waters edge made for a great moment.

Rainbow at Point Pinos on a Stormy Day:
Today was another Moody Day in the Monterey Bay, with periods of showers coming in off the Pacifc, followed by more brief periods of sun.
Perfect weather for rainbows:
It also was a reminder that I need to carry my main rig with me more often; even when I'm not specifically cruising for pics. 🤔 So this was done with a Samsung Galaxy instead.
