Homemade TrueNAS
Check this beast out. Synology pissed me off with their new requirement for branded drives, and lack of supporting 20TB drives. So, I'm building my own NAS with TrueNAS. 6x 20TB (WD Red Pro) SATA drives (and a 1TB SSD for the OS). Old SuperMicro X9DRL-iF mobo w/ 2x (Xeon E5-2697) CPUs, and 64GB ECC RAM for each CPU. That might be overkill for a NAS? Mostly use them for archival, not streaming or anything. But, maybe streaming from NAS would not be as cludgy, now. Planning on RAIDZ2, which should give me about 73TB storage with possible loss of 2 drives, if I understand correctly. Akin to RAID6, I think?
I just can't believe I got 6 SATA drives mounted on this tiny 2020 rail open air rig and it's not falling over. hehheh.
Almost all used equipment (except for the drives and CPU coolers). A little afraid to power it up. This was a bitch of a puzzle to put together. Everything is wrapped through or mounted over everything else. If I have to tear this back down to replace something that came DOA, .... imma be a sad monkey.
