Experimental studies addressing the longevity of Bacillus subtilis spores – The first data from a 500-year experiment | PLOS One
Scientists have launched an unusual experiment that will last 500 years. The researchers want to determine how long bacteria can survive in a completely dry state. Final results are expected in 2514.
The unique experiment consists of 800 simple glass vials containing dried bacteria of two species: Chroococcidiopsis and Bacillus subtilis. From 2038 until 2514, analysis will be performed only once every quarter century—every 25 years.
