Dogs with a large vocabulary of object labels learn new labels by overhearing like 1.5-year-old infants | Science

Neuroscientists investigated whether dogs can learn new words not through direct instruction, but by "eavesdropping" on human conversations, much like young children do. The study focused on a small group of dogs "gifted" for word learning (Gifted Word Learner dogs)—animals with an unusually large vocabulary of object names. Such dogs are rare and are not associated with a specific breed or living conditions.
The results showed that these dogs are able to learn new object names by observing their owners' interactions, even when the conversation is not addressed directly. Moreover, the dogs successfully formed associations between a word and an object, even when they were not presented simultaneously. In terms of learning efficiency, some dogs were as effective as, and sometimes even superior to, human children around eighteen months old.

Bark microbiota modulate climate-active gas fluxes in Australian forests | Science

Scientists have shown that microorganisms living in tree bark play a vital role in climate regulation by actively participating in the greenhouse gas cycle. Analysis of the bark microbiota of eight common Australian tree species revealed that the bark harbors a vast number of microorganisms—up to 6 trillion cells per square meter. Genomic studies revealed that these communities are fundamentally different from soil and aquatic microbes and include bacteria with flexible metabolisms capable of utilizing a variety of gaseous substrates. It was found that bark microbes can absorb methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide in the presence of oxygen, and release them when oxygen is depleted. The results demonstrate that the bark microbiota, in conjunction with the trees, performs a climate-regulating function.

Antibiotics stimulate protein transfer to persister cells.
Scientists have discovered a previously unknown protein exchange mechanism in bacteria that is activated in response to stress from low concentrations of antibiotics. It turns out that some cells begin to secrete membrane vesicles filled with proteins, while others in the same population enter a state that facilitates their active uptake. Thus, bacteria are capable of directly transferring functional proteins to each other, not just exchanging DNA, as previously thought.
Mutual aid is everywhere, even in bacteria.

Co-option and innovation in neural crest evolution.

An international team of researchers has proposed a new hypothesis for the origin of neural crest cells—one of the key evolutionary innovations in vertebrates. The authors believe that the first neural crest cells arose not to form jaws and skulls, as previously assumed, but as migratory pigment cells providing protection from ultraviolet radiation and camouflage. Only later did this population acquire the ability to transform into a variety of specialized cells, including neurons, glia, melanocytes, and elements of the craniofacial skeleton. According to the researchers, it was the gradual adoption of preexisting genetic programs (co-option) and the high plasticity of neural crest cells that enabled the emergence of the complex organs and tissues characteristic of vertebrates, transforming this cell population into a unique evolutionary platform for the emergence of new anatomical structures.

Using new combined tracking sensors, scientists have uncovered the navigational peculiarities of green sea turtles during transoceanic migrations.
It turns out that the turtles do navigate using two parameters of the Earth's geomagnetic field—its intensity and tilt—but their magnetic map is very rough. During migrations, the reptiles can deviate from their optimal route for long periods due to currents, then gradually adjust their course as the magnetic field changes. According to the authors, this imperfect navigation system has evolutionary advantages: random deviations from their usual routes can lead to the exploration of new breeding grounds and facilitate the dispersal of the species.

Scientists have launched an unusual experiment that will last 500 years. The researchers want to determine how long bacteria can survive in a completely dry state. Final results are expected in 2514.
The unique experiment consists of 800 simple glass vials containing dried bacteria of two species: Chroococcidiopsis and Bacillus subtilis. From 2038 until 2514, analysis will be performed only once every quarter century—every 25 years.
