Boys and young men are more susceptible to asthma and allergic reactions, but after puberty, the situation reverses: girls and women suffer from these conditions in greater numbers.
In a paper published in Science Immunology, scientists described how endogenous androgens protect the lungs of male mice from type 2 inflammation. The mechanism is that androgens enhance sympathetic innervation of the lungs. Sympathetic nerve endings, in turn, release norepinephrine, which reduces the level of type 2 inflammation, protecting the lungs.
Maybe that's why nerds are now depicted with inhalers?
Another guess: perhaps modern gluten-free, tolerant, feminist, socially adaptive attitudes like safety, sorry-land, social skills, nontoxic, etc., where any careless glance can lead to accusations of harassment, are changing the nature of new generations, who no longer need anything but board games, even sex, too quickly for genetic degeneration. But it is quite reasonable to assume that the mind and the hormonal system are extremely closely and deeply connected, and these changes, occurring at the speed of one generation, are happening precisely through the hormonal system, dramatically reducing the level of male sex hormones in guys and, most likely, female hormones in girls.
