I think it is technically possible to run alternative root servers but I'm less sure about how you could have multiple roots which may not agree.
Clearly DNS is too hierarchical ... Maybe we should all start memorising IPv6 addresses ... hmm aren't they handed out by IANA/ICANN which is also US-based?

The idea of alternative root servers first became popular in 1995 after Network Solutions, recently acquired by SAIC, introduced a registration fee on domains under the .com .net and .org gTLDs. Many ccTLDs introduced fees soon after (prior to that, domain registrations everywhere were free, but hosting was expensive).
At the time, AlterNIC was the best-known (and possibly the first) of the alternative DNS root operators.

@leffe @digitaleu @EUCommission The opposite is happening in practice. The EU is mandating using attestation to check the hardware and OS without requiring it supports other operating systems. In practice, this is the EU banning using any operating systems other than Google Mobile Services Android and iOS. If they didn't want to do that then the standards would not be made to require it without mandating allowing secure alternatives with support for similar or better verification.

I'm beginning to see that the Gemini protocol use of TOFU (Trust On First Use) for certs or some similar approach that does NOT need centralised authority makes ALOT of sense. I wonder if some "secure" distribution of public keys would help, e.g. a shop has leaflets with their QR code or just stickers with that on? I suppose the problem is for non-tech people as well as dealing with things like compromised keys etc.

By the same logic every site on the Internet could be disrupted by a call to the CEO of ICANN, which is a US-based organization. Or knock out the entire .de TLD with a call to IANA.
Diversify everything away from US organizations, sure, but AWS and Microsoft are real threats. Trump has these CEOs on speed dial and they can’t help but jump to kiss his orange ass at every opportunity.
By contrast, it’s not clear that anyone at the ISRG would even return his call.

There's also the Moxie Marlinspike proposal en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Converge… to do trust of SSL certificates different.
And in these times of crisis and a burning planet, as a note to self and others : Years ago Autistici/Inventati (The friendly email and blogs hoster from Italy, and under threat by USA) before Let's Encrypt became popular, used importing of the CA part for SSL certificate in your browser. Not plug and play for common users but it is a way to use SSL when everything else fails.

Yeah, Trump is the immediate concern. However, your suggestion might be frying pan -> fire. Who knows who might be in charge of the EU at some future point. Senior EU officials endorsing W Social is just a warning sign
Something more independent of any government is required. Getting certificate authorities included in browsers and email clients etc., shouldn't be that difficult. Funding might be more of a challenge.
Full disclosure: my country isn't even an EU member.

The goal needs to be getting rid of CAs, but minimizing the number we have as long as they're still needed, fixing DNS so that the root cannot be compromised by one rogue nation, and ultimately moving away from a centralized hierarchical name system to an autonomous/self-sovereign one.

There are very good reasons we don't use raw IP addresses: they tie you to a particular hosting location which is an even easier point of failure to attack than any name/directory system (DNS or otherwise), they don't admit cryptographic authentication of the transport without preshared public key fingerprints, the v4 space is way too small to accommodate everyone without sharing addresses (which can't be done without a name in Host header, SNI, or similar to disambiguate), and v6 adoption is still pitifully bad.
If you're going to suggest using something we already have, at least make it .onion addresses.

You can get certificates for a raw IP, but there is no guard against them being fraudulently issued to anyone who can MITM the connection, or against a previous user of the IP address still having a valid certificate for it. It's just an all-bad situation.
Regarding .onion and CIA, the worst case is that traffic analysis can find the actual location of hidden services. There is absolutely, cryptographically, no way to MITM the content of the channel because it's e2e encrypted with a key the client can validate (because essentially the public key is the address). So in a worst case, you have the same (non-)secrecy guarantee on network location as you would on the open internet, but far greater (rock solid) guarantee of secrecy of the data channel.
@fitheach In case you're wondering how the situation for raw IP addresses differs from DNS names, issuance of a cert for a DNS name is protected by the CAA record, which is protected by DNSSEC, and which can mandate that HTTP-01 method not be accepted for authenticating ownership of the name (in which case, MITM is useless for obtaining a fraudulent certificate).
This still depends on DNS root not being compromised, which is the core threat we're facing, but it's not a compromise that could be done silently without everyone finding out that it's happening.

If the TLDs publish their public keys and NS/glue records, anyone can set up their own root with their own root key. From there, TLSA for certificate validation. The current CA system requires that the CA uses the ICANN root, which means you need them to get a TLS certificate via any CA.

There is a strong parallel between arbitrary ICANN and arbitrary CAs. Interestingly, Google and Co have created Certificate Transparency to reduce the authority of CAs, and I wonder if that cannot also be used for domains.
Make it so every domain has a certificate, stored in dnsa. Distribute all updates to all other tlds, just like CT, so cross-verification is possible
I mean if your TLS is compromised during provisioning, you have bigger problems, no? And short-lived certs should assuage the previous-owner worry (LE only issues short-term certs for IP addresses.)
The advantage: you can get someone their own place on the web in seconds with no centralised registry.
My CIA remark was more about its initial funding. An anonymous network isn’t useful if you’re the only agency using it. Hence Tor.
@fitheach The selling point of Tor is privacy/anonymity, but even without that it gives you something huge: the ability to provision a permanent portable identity your service is reachable by, independent of any authority. This is far easier to get than a public-facing stable unfiltered IPv4.
Of course it can only be reached by folks who know how to use Tor, which is a big downside.
I'm not sure what you mean by "if your TLS is compromised during provisioning". There is no TLS to be compromised during bootstrapping of a certificate. The ACME HTTP-01 challenge takes place unprotected and anyone on the path can MITM it or do their own forged request and get a certificate for your IP any time they want.
I'd like to add free ACME based S/MIME certificates to the wishlist.
There _is_ even an existing EU solution for that already, at the Barcelona Polytechnic Uni. But they lack funds and their root certificate isn't integrated in typical OSses or Email clients.
This is such low hanging fruit, @EUCommission that it's unthinkable how this hasn't been done years ago already.

Either way it's technically incorrect. Nobody gets "kicked off the web" tomorrow by CA breaking. Certificates have a validity period and the failure more would be inability to renew and need to switch to a different CA before expiration, not immediate breakage.

This is a hard “it depends” for me. As with the slop of yesteryear it can be used to gamify oneself into addiction to a corporation, or out of a bad habbit.
And it isn't panacea, even if used “for good”. Me with executive disfunction can gamify myself into depression, trough self-depreciation.
I just discovered the Fediverse (English) Wikipedia page has a huge section on AT Protocol and I question why. It seems like excessive promotion of Bluesky and its protocol that is not compatible with ActivityPub, both technically and in spirit. Illustrating bridging isn't the same as compatibility. Might as well add sections for other random network protocols like XMPP (Jabber).

This is a purely rhetorical statement that no one (not even you) can agree with. You wouldn’t defend opinions that call for murder, to put it bluntly.
In my case, I do not agree with giving free rein to fascist opinions. The world does not become a better place because of them, contrary to what you write.
It’s clearly not possible to get a refund: you have a 14-day cancellation policy (which has expired in my case), and I don’t blame you for that. I shouldn’t have paid for such a long period, especially with a non-decreasing rate, and I’m the only one to blame. I just wanted you to know why I won’t be renewing, and why I’ll be urging everyone to steer clear of Mullvad."

@renardboy For consumer VPNs, that is spot-on 100%
I generally call them virtual ISPs. They're just acting as a proxy for your internet traffic.
I do use them from time to time. But that's mostly to circumvent network blocks when I'm travelling and my connection to my own VPN server is blocked. Then I use consumer VPNs to get a connection and where I can connect to my own VPN server. I have less reasons to distrust the ISP where my own VPN server is than any other ISP - local or virtual.
But there might be other reasons for consumer VPNs. Like travelling and connecting to unprotected local networks/wifi, then I'd be more willing to trust a consumer VPN I've vetted for.
Or if you just need an IP address from another region than where you are now. But you should vet the VPN provider regardless.
Consumer VPNs does not provide anonymity (you pay for their service and you need to trust they don't log your traffic) nor can they give any privacy (you route your traffic and likely your DNS queries via them).
Tor is better at anonymity, but does not give privacy unless you only use hidden services - the traffic will otherwise exit to the "open" Internet somewhere. How strong the anonymity part is, depends on how much you trust the relay nodes in the network. It's not completely impossible to track where a Tor connection starts - but for most common users, this is less of a concern.
For a better anonymity network, you'd probably need to look at I2P networks.

I've dug through some of those rabbit holes a few times earlier. It's mostly been misinterpreted information ending up with false fact claims, often due to Protons incapable public relation team combined with CEO statements adding more confusion than clarity. People teaching public relation management have an unending source of how to not do things when looking at Proton.
Majority of these false claims comes from users who gave Proton a clear-text recovery address which Proton had to give away as that was the Swiss courts ruling. If these users hadn't been as stupid to enable this recovery address, no information of real value could have been provided. Also, those recovery addresses was typically hotmail or gmail accounts. So guess what happens next when these requests comes from entities in the USA.
For VPN accounts, there is no logging of traffic. Which has even been confirmed by third party auditors ... protonvpn.com/blog/no-logs-aud…
So yes, Proton has provided limited details due to law enforcement requests coming via Swiss courts. Which generally turns out valuable when the account owner hasn't understood how to protect its account. And if Proton - or Mullvad, or basically any other company in the world - don't adhere to court rulings, those companies won't survive the end of the day.
But if you're doing a more sane protection of your Proton account, there is generally very little which can leak out from it, even in cases which ends up in a disfavourable court ruling. Protecting your account is in the very end the account owners responsibility.

I have heard only good things about Fastmail.
Unlike Proton and Tuta, they don’t market themselves as ‘secure, private’ email, but that always smelled like snake oil to me (email isn’t end-to-end encrypted, neither of them have done the work to run the mail server in a TEE where you’d get guarantees that they couldn’t see it and, even if they did, it’s hard to prove that they didn’t insert a relay that copied the email out before forwarding).
Defending the right isn't the same as defending the thing.

I am a long-time Mullvad user. I support people's right to express and access views that I disagree with free from government interference. But I try not to give my money to people who will then give that money on to Fascists. That is the issue.
So, in good conscience, I cannot continue to send money to a company that enriches Daniel Berntsson, so that he can give the money to Örebropartiet.
Many authoritarians say they support free expression when they do not have power, then to suppress it once they do. Lenin and Trotsky talked a good game about freedom of speech until they had power. If Örebropartiet protects freedom of expression once they have power, it'll be the first time a far-right party does so. If Daniel Berntsson thinks they will, he's a fool.

This is just badly-worded corporate talk that you copied and pasted dozens of times under every critical post, instead of offering an honest response to what is legitimate concern. And the vagueness of "we protect the right to express and access views we disagree with" does not do you any favours either. In politics there are opposing views as to how finances are handled, and there are those whose views include the notion that entire minorities do not deserve equal rights.
Karl Popper's paradox of tolerance explains in very simple terms how accepting, let alone financially supporting, such views indiscriminately is not as honourable and harmless as you are suggesting. Presenting the financial support of a political party as the noble cause of protecting what you refer to as free speech is a false equivalent. Matter of fact, political parties and politicians do not just "express views" and then go home and nobody is affected. Their very existence is based on aiming to turn those views into legislation, directly affecting the lives of thousands, or millions.
Framing people who ask for refunds because they do not wish for their money to contribute in financing a specific political party with views that go against their ethics as not supporting free speech is dishonest and reprehensible. Do better.

But giving money to fascists is a way different problem that can’t be ignored. And yeah, it’s a "personal decision" of the cofounder, but ultimately it’s money he had because of Mullvad, and he’s going to gain money from it in the future too, so paying Mullvad mean giving money to someone that fund fascists with it after. So we can’t separate the company from its founder, except if you fire him and don’t give him any more money from your profit, saying that you disagree with what he’s doing with it.
And I don’t think that’s what is going to happen.

And yet can you guarantee that all money that I give you flows to preserve the freedom of everyone to be freely able to express, live and have privacy? You cannot, since it is proven a large sum went indirectly into making a party that cares about none of those things and actively wants to dismantle human rights.
Caring about only some human rights is impossible, and pretending they are not inherently linked is intellectually dishonest. This isn't a mere "difference of opinion", I'd like to ask you how one could be pro free speech information and privacy when one would like to discriminate based on nationality, deny people entry and housing based on where they come from and discriminate based on place of origin/language/skin colour (these are all personal identification information!!).

But implying that the people who want a refund now, also don't want to "protect the right to express and access views we disagree with" is insulting. I can't even begin to describe how angry I am right now. **Who** actually tries to remove the right to free speech and free expression? Liars. I have many friends who believe in free speech and privacy who are among the ones whom the Örebro party call "parasites", and who would lose their homes, jobs and families under their euphamistically named "remigration" programme.
Apart from anything else, there is no way to carry out a mass deportation programme without mass surveillance, as we are seeing in the US now. Huge numbers of people in Sweden would be terrified of saying the wrong thing for fear of being thrown out of the country,
It is utterly inconsistent to support mass deportation and say you support free speech and privacy.

Since it's a small party currently, it doesn't gather much attention by the bigger media houses in Sweden yet (at least not in these World Cup days). Smaller news sites, like flamman.se and nyadagbladet.se covers it so far. But as this will propagate further, the bigger news oulets will pick it up - as right radical movements has a tendency to get quite some attention - at least in the Nordic countries.
Right now, the Örebro Party is scrambling enough votes to be qualified for the next parliament election. That was already covered last autumn and winter in more news outlets.

I hadn't read Luka The Mouse's page before today, but it looks good to me. It's the path I took, more or less.
I went from Google to custom email domain + Proton, and then moved the custom email domain from Proton to Tuta.
I use a self-hosted version of the open source sandstorm.org for my cloud drive. But you have to be relatively technical to do that.
I moved from Proton Pass for password manager to Bitwarden, but Bitwarden has been doing things I dislike. I'm looking for other alternatives.

...going down the rabbit hole, a significant number of the new TLDs are owned by megacorps with financial ties to the US (normal global finance stuff). Outside of special cases like .eu, ccTLDs are pretty much the only "safe" ones if you trust that government.
The global economic reality is if the US Administration sends a letter to (X) claiming a domain is a criminal enterprise (true or not), most registrars will cave to demands.

Agreed, we are not. However, there are situations in which something like this can be contested, which is why I asked what their "justification" was.
Domain suspension is typically a last resort for addressing cybercrime, cutting off hardcoded c&c being an example.
Even TPB's .org suspension didn't last indefinitely.

(The question is not unreasonable, for example I would make sure to not send staff travelling abroad without a backup payment method off the Visa/Mastercard/etc. circuit.)
